According to Friedman the Canes are not bringing back Brett Pesce and Martin Necas.

Necas would be interesting given that he's only 25 years of age.
Though, he'll be an RFA and we'd need to trade for his rights.

Pesce had a rough year, but I am surprised by the Canes boldness with Necas. Such a talented player.

He's always stood out as an awkward fit on Carolina because he's not a good forechecker, not a guy for a dump and chase team. He's a great rush player.

The Kraken, so far we've been a bit more of a dump and chase type team, just not to the degree that the Canes are. Diet Hurricanes, you could call us. So if we go for Necas it would be a big signal that we're trying to move in a more rush oriented direction.

Guess what GM drafted Necas? Ron Francis.

I guess the coach selection will decide that for us. Though what exactly is a rush oriented style? I swear all the coaches I have watched have just played dump and chase.

I don't remember where to find the stats on this - but there are teams that dump and chase much more than others. The Hurricanes are always on top of that list. And then there are clubs that carry it in much more than others - that tend to generate more chances off the entry.

My Jackets under Torts were a dump and chase team and then in the last three years they've been one of the teams that carries the puck in the most and dumps it in the least.

Any guess as to what the asking price might be for Necas?

Well, you're trading for his RFA rights.
Most likely a 2nd + would be my guess.

BTW: Patrick Laine is said to have sold his house in Columbus.
Could be someone to take a chance on and most likely for cheap(trade asset wise).

I think more like our 1st, and we can assume any team acquiring him will have a contract worked out with Necas first.

They won't take futures for themselves but maybe Carolina would take futures to parlay them in a separate deal. The only other piece of interest for them that I can think of is Adam Larsson.

Per Canes fans on the mains, they expect Necas will go for something close to $8m x 8. I'd have to think long and hard about whether that's worth it. He's not a very complete player.

BTW: Patrick Laine is said to have sold his house in Columbus.

Laine would come much cheaper and thankfully doesn't require a long term commitment. He's also got a lot more off ice issues to sort out first.

Hypothetically though if he was interested in a fresh start elsewhere, I think the Jackets would make it happen and it would cost little.

Oddly enough my issues with him are similar to Necas in that he always prefers to rush the puck and this is more of a forechecking team. There would have to be a more full transformation.

Laine does so many things well, including passing and backchecking which folks tend to not know about outside of Columbus. But his propensity to rush every puck leads to a lot of frustrating turnovers.

I dunno about Laine. Following the Jets, something just clicked off in that kid back when the whole thing about him being “addicted” to Fortnite made the rounds. He just isn’t the same player, almost like he lost his love for the game.

No one's going to give the Canes a top ten pick for the rights to an RFA they can't keep because of financial restrictions.

Though, if he truly wants 8x8(I doubt it) then you probably have to take a long hard look at that.

Yeah, Laine would be interesting and could be had at a low cost if you're negotiating well.

Wouldn't mind taking a chance on him given that he only has two years left on his deal.

From the Kraken's standpoint, what pieces are expendable to get an elite forward?

Elite? Most. Hold onto Beniers and Wright for sure, Dunn, McCann, Bjorkstrand too. That’s me. I have a couple others I’d consider. If you can trade anybody else away for a ln elite forward, I think you do it because you can keep the pieces I mention. You need good players to compliment elite talent.

I wouldn't mind trading Bjorkstrand as well.
You've got to give to get something and you also need to create space for the "elite guy".

I’m reconsidering. I think everybody is on the table. We don’t have a player as good as an elite forward. Only a couple guys with the potential. If the right deal can get an elite level player you consider everybody when you don’t have an elite level player.

Thats exactly how my thinking is too. We have a lot of good players but no elite players. I would keep Beniers and Wright around but other than that, have most of our players and prospects on the table.

Ofcourse, who I would want to give up depends on the player we would get back.

If you gave me a choice of 3 to keep, I’d go Wright and Beniers for potential. Then I’d have to choose between McCann and Dunn for the 3rd. Give me 4 and I’m good.

I would think this would correlate with the amount but of playmaking star power you have on your team. Would you say that’s it or more of a coach’s vision on how to generate the most goals?

It sort of depends on the skillsets. If you have Jack Hughes then yes, you are probably going to play a rush game. If you have Oliver Bjorkstrand types, who excel on retrievals, then you play dump and chase.

But sometimes dump and chase is just better. The Canes are committed to it even though they have the talent to rush. That's why Necas is not so valuable to them. Florida was a great rush team and decided to become a more playoff style forechecking team that gets pucks deep. That was when they brought in Tkachuk and Maurice. It's not just about scoring more goals, I'm not sure about that. There are also impacts on your defensive game. Rush clubs also give up rushes back and forth, whereas forechecking teams, even if they don't win the puck back, at least its 200 ft from the net.

This is the first updated end of season list with projected contract values for every UFA (the projections in RainyCity's post are from January):

I believe evolving wild also does projections like this every offseason leading up to UFA. I know everyone slags UFA but I think it's gone too far. For the Kraken I think UFA should be a big part of how we build the team. We're staring at a 5+ year rebuild if we try to sit back and go slow through the draft.

These are some players that would fit the Kraken at the proposed values:

I think Guentzel actually is a $9m player, that's not bad for him.

I would try to extend Adam Larsson this summer but if he's not interested, make bids on Matt Roy ($5.8m) and Dylan DeMelo ($5.3m). Those are reasonable numbers for a very hard position to fill. No I don't have any reason to think Larsson wouldn't extend.

Vincent Desharnais is listed at $1.1m? If that's accurate I'm in, but I don't think that's close to accurate. 6'7 RD playing big minutes deep in the playoffs, he'll get paid.

Teuvo Teravainen at $5m could be really good value. He's a skilled player who maybe hasn't always had a chance to shine in the Canes system.

If Dakota Joshua is actually only costing $3.25m then that's a good deal. I don't think he's going to be much of a scorer but he's a hard player type to get either way. We don't have size like that.

I made the case earlier that we'll need a shutdown center to take the hard minutes that we don't want to give to Wright and Beniers, especially if we're selling on Gourde. I have no nostalgia for Wennberg but he's listed here at a reasonable $3.85m. Other defensive options - Teddy Blueger at $2.1m and Chandler Stephenson at $5.6m.

Stephan Noesen is a hard nosed vet that adds powerplay scoring. You can put him on your 4th line like Sprong only he won't drive the coach insane, seems like a good deal at $3.2m.

Jordan Martinook is the exemplar of Canes type forechecking. $2.75m. I'm not expecting much but he'd help our 4th line.

Oliver Kylington is a blazing fast LD with unmet upside. He's missed a lot of time with off-ice / personal / family issues that I can't evaluate. But purely as a hockey player, he's a steal with upside at $1.1m.

If I had to guess how it actually goes for us, I could see us landing Teravainen (Francis' only ever big trade acquisition IIRC), someone like Blueger, and a couple more 13F / 7D types.

The Daily Faceoffs free agent class preview and estimated contracts.

Looking at that.
Who still wants Reinhart?

You beat me to it.

Not me, Reinhart is not that caliber of player.

Edit: Actually you're posting the old projections from earlier in the year. In the newly released ones (in my post) Reinhart is at $11.3m, which is bonkers.

no way would I pay over 9M for Reinhart. That 11M number is just silly. He’s not a guy that can solo carry a team. That’s where money like that is reserved for.
It's also the fact that he's undoubtedly asking for 6-8 years and the now-mandatory NMC, putting that contract well into his mid-to-late 30's when it would be an absolute boat anchor.

I like Huberdeau and would love to see him turn it around in Calgary...but if that whole deal taught me anything, it's to be cautiously pessimistic about how some of those Panthers players numbers will translate once they move to other teams?
