Will he get a better contract with an extension or going to arbitration and becoming an Free Agent. Depends on whether the Canes offer him a contract that leans more on his potential or his body of work.

5 years 5 mills makes sense for both. Both take the risk of over/underpaid. Maybe 4/4 if Canes has done a great job of committing him to the city.

That, or just another year of the same contract..

No reason for Kotkaniemi to take less without term. Canes gave his agent the leverage.

Kotkaniemi still doesn’t have much leverage. The QO doesn’t or wont handcuff the Canes. 1st and 3rd for a one year rental is a gamble for any team but it happens. I doubt a team is paying Kotkaniemi 5 x 5 on the open market. His value is still potential production not expected production. Knowing that, the Canes probably don’t do that either.

it may be 4x4 that would take him to UFA. Gives Canes value and Kotkaniemi flexibility for his next deal.

It's almost that time. Jasperi Kotkaniemi can sign an extension with the Hurricanes in January. Will he? If so, what will he get?
He started off extremely slow when he played wing. Much better production when finally moved back to C. He’d probably be best to play it out to to get a better gage of his production.

And the Habs will be watching Arizona walk to the podium to use the KK 1st rounder.

big winners here seem to be KK and Arizona. Carolina too if they have a deep playoff run.

Losers here. Habs and MB.

Well no.
Arizona will be getting a much later 1st round pick than they were expecting. They couldve gotten a better 1st round pick had they kept dvorak and traded him later.

Carolina is paying 6.1 M to a player for 3rd line production.

There is no winner in this trade other than KK.

How is that relevant? It was a dumb move by the Canes. He isn't worth $6M in cap space.

As has been explained ad nauseam, Kotkaniemi’s cap hit is largely irrelevant to the Canes. Carolina had a unique cap situation of a lot of space and nothing to spend it on for just 1 year (raises for Necas and DeAngelo or an equivalent coming in 22-23). It’s not going to prevent the team from adding at the deadline, if it wants to.

The move should be judged by the return. Up to this point, it’s been a mild overpay. As much as some want Carolina to take a major L here, it’s not going to happen. It was a modest risk gamble to begin with.

KK is scoring at 2.08 p/60 at 5v5. That's actually 1st line productivity.

Anytime you have a player that's not playing up to his contract it's bad. That 6M could've been used for much more, same with the assets to get him.

Yikes i didn’t realize some habs fans are still trying to convince people that Carolina didn’t screw them over.

Bergevin literally got fired and you guys are still trying to defend him after he basically gave up 3rd overall + for a 3rd line C.

Oh well, i guess the standings speak for themselves.

But if he doesn’t get the QO he’s free to negotiate with whatever team he wants. Playing better as a C vs the wing. So, making sure he gets played at C probably should be a priority for him in the next contract.
3 years left til complete free agency. But he’s now arbitration eligible. So he could take a 1 year deal and if he performs well would still get paid on the next deal.

but, security in term of more than a year may be a desire for him. Would have earned $9 mill less escrow and stuff after 4 seasons.

but that’s up to him in what he wants.

Weren’t there rumours KK’s agent had done discussions about what an extension would look like before the offer sheet was signed?

Come on, include term in the poll. And with the narrow range of salary options, there's really no way to distinguish between a bridge and a longer term deal. (If any, obviously.)

Can someone refresh all the interesting variation between team or player elected arbitration and the resulting QOs and their R/U FA outcomes? The simple expension would be rather boring.
