According to a Swiss journalist Stephan Roth (https://twitter.com/9Roth), there are talks of Kaspars DaugaviņÅ¡ getting signed by the Sabres before the 14/15 season.

This rumor is also substantiated by the fact that shortly after the Olympic Games in Sochi there were reports in the Latvian media that the Sabres might sign another Latvian player.

So considering that there are rumors going around both in Latvia and Switzerland, one might assume that there has been an offer from the Sabres and they're probably in negotiations about the contract.

DaugaviņÅ¡ was drafted in the 3rd round by Ottawa Senators back in 2006. He won the Calder Cup with Binghamton in the AHL and was called up to Sens in 11/12, where he spent the next 1.5 seasons mostly playing as an energy-line player and a PK specialist.

He was waived by the Sens in 12/13 and was picked up by the Boston Bruins. After a short stint with the Bruins (during which he played in the Stanley Cup finals), DaugaviņÅ¡ wasn't offered a one-way contract and decided to leave North America (which is important, because he definitely wouldn't return just to play in the AHL for most of the season).

He was later signed by Genève-Servette in the Swiss league (NLA), where he has become one of the leading forwards of the league, recording 44 points in 44 games.

As for his playing style, he's a speedy, creative guy, he's a pretty good playmaker, great along the boards, great at puck possession. He can both play a gritty North-South game, as well as a more 'European' game (unlike, say, Omark).

The thing he lacked in the NHL previously was a scoring touch, but he seems to have made leaps and bounds in this area in the 13/14 season. Before you read into his NHL stats too much, keep in mind that he was completely limited to a bottom 6 role before.

Latvians forecheck like mad men. I like it. Also, seems like Nolan is going to be happy with this

Ok, I will transfer my post here. Mods can delete it in Roster speculations Topic.

That signing would be great for both sides, IMO.

Daug obviously wants to play in NHL again.

Sabres will get a decent player who is great in the locker room, and skill wise would not be worse than half of the Sabres.

Mostly I think Ted wants his LR presence.

So he plays with intensity and high tempo? How is his character? I think if he fits in to the rebuild team with hard working example (Nolan should know him pretty well), we might as well give him a shot. It's only one contract slot and roster place (so it really doesn't matter is it him, Ellis or D'Agostini).

Sabres are at the 50 contract max right now unless they make a move, so couldn't do anything unless they terminated someone before the league year ends.

Can't imagine they're talking to a player like this now to sign in a few months.

Goodbye D'Agostini?

Is Kaspars Daugavins' season done in Europe? Would the Sabres bring him over now because for depth (current injuries)? Would he have to pass through waivers?

He's a hard working guy who's got a great locker-room presence. Always puts the team first and is liked by his teammates.

I'm pretty sure he would have to. So he's supposed to come here before the season ends? Not sure how that is possible with the contract limit?

That sounds great. Can't see anything to lose with him.

I count 48 contracts (with Klesla). Players signed to contracts who are playing in Juniors do not count towards the 50 contract limit.

No, his team is currently in the play-offs, which have just started a couple of days ago.

As far as I know, once he cleared the waivers last year, he became a UFA, so he doesn't have to pass through waivers again. Not 100% sure, though.

It's not. They can't sign anyone else right now unless they terminate the contract of someone else. Might do that with Klesla anyways, but still.

Okay, sounds like for next season then. In which case he will be an UFA and would not have to pass through waivers.

Yes he would have to pass through waivers if the Sabres were to sign him for this season

13.23 In the event a professional or former professional Player plays in a league outside North America after the start of the NHL Regular Season, other than on Loan from his Club, he may thereafter play in the NHL during that Playing Season (including Playoffs) only if he has first either cleared or been obtained via Waivers. For the balance of the Playing Season, any such Player who has been obtained via Waivers may be Traded or Loaned only after again clearing Waivers or through Waiver claim. This section shall not apply to a Player on the Reserve List or Restricted Free Agent List of an NHL Club with whom the Player is signing an NHL SPC or is party to an existing SPC with such NHL Club.

The contract limit issue isn't one, but I see little reason to believe that, if the Sabres are going to sign Daugavins, it happens before the offseason

I was a fan of his game when he was playing in NA and his Olympic performance only helped. He'd be a nice addition.

Daugavins is a UFA because Boston did not give him a qualifying offer last offseason. He would have to pass through waivers due to the provision cited above, if he were signed for this season. If signed in the offseason, he would not need to pass through waivers to play in the NHL (but this is unrelated to his UFA status)

Why not terminate Klesla and bring him in now? This would allow them to keep Rochester more fully stocked for the playoffs. Maybe D-Lo goes back down?

an earlier poster mentioned his current team is in the playoffs. I doubt he leaves them until after their playoff run is done.

If you mean now as in this season, then I don't see why not once his team is done with the playoffs.

No need to terminate Klesla's contract, they are already under the contract limit as far as we can tell.

Interesting signing if it happens. More defensively responsible hard working forwards for the tank next year? Sure.

Why not, another warm body for next season. With that crazy shootout move he can replace omark, except he can actually be useful during the game too

If he's one of the leading scorers in the NLA, had a good Olympics, has connections with Nolan, and is only 1 year removed from NA, I'm not opposed to giving him a shot
