To be fair he was supposed to be a minute eater replacement for Emelin, not a replacement for 50-60 point Markov (that player no longer existed anyway at that point, as demonstrated with his KHL play after he left). But the actual choice of Alzner was a pretty big failure by pro scouting.
That's fair about Alzner vs Emelin. Still it's embarassing that the Habs pro scouting team/Bergevin thought Alzner was a good acquisition to the roster. Not only that, correct me if I'm wrong, but Alzner was a prime Bergevin target, with numerous rumors linking him to the Habs. Even as a deadline add. He was seen as a fit and a good choice for a long time IIRC.
It's not fair for Markov who was the #1 Dman on his team in points in his first KHL season, with a better ppg than his 2004-2005 season in the Russian league while he was starting his prime. He would have played as a 35-40 pts Dman for a season IMO and he would have faded away after that. Remember that the NHL was his comfort zone. To not acknowledge the impact of losing him without proper replacements and stating that the dmans will be a stonger group with Alzner, is crazily bad for Bergevin record.
