I always thought Nikitin was talented but he never played up to what I think his potential was.
There was an injury towards the end of Nikitin's time in Columbus I think, lower body, that I think must have made it hard for him to train that off-season. He came into camp out of shape and was in the dog house with management for it. Especially with Eakins being such a fitness nut it looked like he was lazy in the coaches eye. Right from the start of the season he had another injury (ankle) which probably had something to do with the injury from the end of his time in Columbus. IIRC it was a high ankle sprain. It wasn't long after his return he got injured again, this time his back. That pretty much cemented his down slide the rest of his time in Edmonton and really looked out of sync after that.
