Folks if he stays in da no risk lane he is fine as a 6D with PK duty .. when he gets into trouble is when he thinks he is Bobby Orr .. I hope he keeps to a very simple no risk game .. best game he can play is when nobody notices him at all .. but he seems to forget real quick what his capabilities are

Problem is that he is a manchurian hockey player. He will suck you in until you really need him and then betray you by throwing the game.

2 mill is not overpaid for a bottom pairing defenseman, unless that guy brings zero special teams value and is a mediocre ES player.

Holl is worth a lot more than 2 mill. He is certainly not overpaid.

Given that Gio is getting paid $800,000 and Sandin and Lily are at $1.4 million and I think they are all much better players than Holl. That makes Holl overpaid given what he brings to the organization. If we substituted Benn or Mete at $750,000 as our 6th defenseman and played them with Gio, I am not sure how much of a drop-off in play we would notice.

On a team where cap is not a problem then maybe $2 million for a bottom-pairing defenseman is fine but given the cap constraints of the Leafs, I think Dubas if given a do-over could have found another Gio at a million instead of Holl.

Holl is a bottom pairing D who needs a top defensive D to play top four minutes. Holls play dropped significantly when Muzzin turned into an average defenceman.
Its shocking that management still isn't aware of this. If they were, Brodie would have been paired with Holl from day one.

Justin Holl was protected in the NHL draft and main reason Leafs chose 4-4-1....another mistake by Dubas. They could have chose 7-3-1 and kept Jared Mccann who got 50 points last year or traded Jared Mccann for a d-man. Another step backward for Dubas with terrible asset management. Holl is so replaceable, bottom pairing dman at best. SMH.

“It’s difficult to nail down with any certainty without a general manager in place, but he’s very much open to coming back to Toronto,” said player agent Brian Bartlett. “He has really enjoyed his time in Toronto, loved the city and fans. The team was really good to him. It’s not a ‘get me out of here’ situation at all.”

“But we also recognize the reality of it, that the Leafs are going to have to, and want to, make some pretty big changes to that roster. And we recognize it’s likely he would be a casualty of that.”

The right-handed defenceman is one of 10 Leafs heading for unrestricted free agency with the team again facing a salary-cap crunch. The Leafs already have six defencemen under contract for next year and are said to be hoping to re-sign Luke Schenn.

Holl is coming off a three-year, $6-million (U.S.) contract and probably looking for about a three-year, $9-million deal according to AFP Analytics, an independent player salary consulting company.

Bartlett did not comment on the AFP Analytics numbers. But despite Holl taking the brunt of some criticism from Leafs fans, he remains a quality bottom-four defenceman.

The Leafs don’t have a GM at the moment, with the team having parted ways with Kyle Dubas. They have been interviewing candidates, with former Calgary GM Brad Treliving said to be the favourite.

From an agent’s perspective, it isn’t as big an issue as one might imagine.

“The good news is, the games don’t start till October,” said Bartlett. “There’s lots of time. There isn’t a rush. We all know there are some moving pieces. From our end, we’ve been through it before. A lot of teams go through a period without a GM at this time of the year.”

Bartlett said Holl was as surprised as anyone that Dubas won’t be returning.

“He likes Kyle a lot,” said Bartlett. “Kyle’s been good to him. Kyle’s been loyal to him in a bunch of different situations. From a personal standpoint, it’s too bad.”
