Jets sign Eric Comrie to a two-year contract

The Winnipeg Jets announced today they have agreed to terms with goaltender Eric Comrie on a two-year contract with an average annual value of $700,000 in the NHL. The contract is a two-way deal in 2019-20 followed by a one-way deal in 2020-21.

This is quite odd unless they actually believe he is going to be back up quality in 2020-21

Stop-gap back up in 20-21 until Berdin is ready for that role since Bro is gone next year.

Not a bad signing, imo.

I did not expect this. Not 2 years. And not 1 way next year. Jets have a lot more hope for Comrie than I do. I expected more like 1x700k, 2 way and no more.

Just because the second year is one-way doesn’t mean we can’t send him down to the AHL and have his contract 100% buried.

I'll be shocked if he stays with the Jets past 2021. I imagine he gets claimed off waivers, but eventually stuck with the Moose is that team waives him again. I think Seattle will be his final shot before considering overseas.

I just don't see him becoming a backup unless Brossoit is traded or walks.

But it's still $900k for 2 years of a not so good hockey player. Ridiculous.
Why is TNSE asking you to chip in? There is no impact on the Jets cap and likely falls within the payroll budget they have for the Moose. Comrie looks like he probably won't make it but it isn't a lost cause and the Jets would have to obtain an AHL quality goaltender if they let him walk.

Why would anyone claim Comrie?

Because a team might have an injured goaltender. Some teams might also see potential in him. I can see it happening.
Claiming Comrie means putting him on your NHL roster. There is likely 10-15 goalies available at cut down time that teams would pick up over Comrie. He is on the Moose this season, as guaranteed as is possible in professional sports.

Comrie is a bad goalie. Watch him a dozen or so games. If the puck doesn't hit him he's lost. Berdin was superior last year.
