Great stuff Holden. I am assuming that the 52.9 million number is our cap hit. Any idea of our actual spend?

That 4th rounder we're missing in the upcoming draft was for Eric Fehr? And we have all the rest? That's pretty good.

The UFA list worries me a little - Jets 1.0 would've signed all the small and/or slow and/or old players and let the rest walk.

Sure hope Chevy and Zinger manage the assets better than the previous incarnation of the team.

Slater, Wellwood and Glass are guys that I think they absolutely have to re-sign. I like Mason as a veteran backup and he seems like he's a character guy, speaking up when the team was playing poorly a month ago, but veteran backups are always available in the summer. I also really like Oduya but I think we have young guys who could step up in his place. Otherwise the UFAs aren't a big deal, there are teams that are in much worse shape regarding upcoming free agents.

Thought I'd bump this thread, since I want to get some discussion going about the state of this roster, and some of the moves that should be made going forward. This is my vision for a 3 year plan for the Jets, with the purpose of becoming a consistent playoff team.

Before I get started, a couple of things:

1) I've listed players on the depth chart where I believe their upside or talent level dictates they should be ON A STANLEY CUP CONTENDING TEAM. Obviously this is a totally subjective exercise, but if nothing else, hopefully it can stimulate some discussion.

2) Players are put in bold, italicized, or normal font. This corresponds as:

Bold: Player whose age/upside/contract dictates they should be part of the Jets longterm plan, as in 2013-14 and beyond.

Normal: Player whose age/upside/contract dictates they should be potentially considered part of the Jets longterm plan, but could also be offloaded in the short term (ie. prior to 2013-14).

Italicized: Player whose age/upside/contract dictates they likely won't be part of the Jets longterm plan, and will most likely be off the roster prior to 2013-14.

Forwards

Kane - x - x
Ladd - Little - Wheeler
Miettinen - Antropov - Wellwood/Burmistrov
Glass - Slater - Thorburn

Cormier
Stapleton
Fehr
Klingberg
Scheifele

Top 6: Yep, there's some holes here. You can argue all you like that this is overly critical, but my assumption is this; if the Jets are going to be a Stanley Cup contender, guys like Ladd, Little and Wheeler have to be considered 2nd line talents. Of course it's always subject to change, but none has showed enough consistency to be considered a bona fide first-liner.

Kane, despite his inconsistent play and often maddening inability to utilize teammates, should be slotted in the first line. The upside is there, no question, and I'd be willing to bet that he'll eventually reach it. So, what's missing from making this a true first line?

-A rangy, cerebral playmaker. Hey, that sounds like Scheifele! I hope he meets that expectation, I really do. Because if not, I just don't like the Jets chances of going to war with Little as their first liner. I just don't. He'd be ideally suited for the 2nd line role on a cup contending team, which is the premise I'm operating from

-A glass-eating, shift-disturbing, 30-30 type of guy. Think Milan Lucic. I believe the only way the Jets can become SC contenders is by infusing their top 6 with guys who are big, tough and compete. Ladd, Little, Wheeler, Kane, those are all good starts. But they need that one extra piece that fits that role, which I just don't feel is Burmistrov (more on that later).

Bottom 6: This looks alot better. Starting with the third line, I believe Miettinen, Antropov and Wellwood are solidly 3rd line guys on a contending team. Down the road, I would expect Klingberg, Cormier and a UFA RW would replace them, as none of the 3 is likely to figure in long-term. 4th line, much the same, though I see them as a bit more entrenched. The only reason why I haven't bolded Glass and Slater is that I have no idea whether they want to test the UFA waters. Nevertheless, Chevy should do everything in his power to get them inked.

Now you're probably asking, where's Burmistrov? Simply put, he's the wildcard in this equation. I just don't know where he fits at this point. But once again, operating under the premise that we want to be a SC contending team in 3 years time, I just can't justify placing him in our top 6. If he develops to that level, great. But as it stands, he would be a great 3rd liner, and that's not supposed to be any kind of knock

Depth: Pretty straightforward. Cormier and Klingberg should comprise our future 3rd line. Scheifele will hopefully evolve into a 25-50 type of 1st line C one day, but that's a big question mark. Fehr and Stapleton are dime a dozen players. I just don't see them figuring in long term.

Summary:

Assets:

-solid depth, with players who slot nicely into the 3rd and 4th line roles
-secondary scorers aplenty
-Evander Kane as a longterm building block up front
-Burmistrov

Liabilities:

-Banking heavily that Scheifele will become a true first line C, and not another complementary type
-3rd line showing its age, Cormier and Klingberg may or may not pan out in that role
-Need a true scoring RW with size, so that Wheeler can be utilized in a complementary role

Future outlook:

-since it's highly unlikely the Jets will dip into the UFA pool for that coveted 1st line C or RW, I believe they need to strongly consider trading one of their defensive assets for some forward help.

-UFA period this summer and next summer should be to replenish team with 3rd liners for likely loss of Miettinen, Antropov, and Wellwood. Possibly even a 4th liner if one of Glass or Slater can't be resigned.

-Much of the latter point will be dictated by how ready Cormier and Klingberg are by next season.

Defense

Enstrom - Byfuglien
Hainsey - Bogosian
Oduya - Stuart

Jones
Flood
Postma
Redmond
Meech

Top 4: We're in much better shape up on the backend than up front. Starting with Buff, you'll just have to take the good with the bad. His contract dictates that he's sticking around for the foreseeable future. Bogosian is a longterm building block, he's not going anywhere.

Things get a bit more interesting after that. Enstrom is our #1 dman at the moment, and is just entering his prime. He's also got what is easily the most tradeable contract among our top players, and is a coveted asset as an offensive dman. With the dearth of talent up front, I definitely wouldn't rule out dealing him to acquire top-level talent at forward. Though he can be inconsistent, I like Hainsey in a top 4 role. I just don't know whether we can meet his contract demands come 2013. This makes acquiring a top 4 defenseman a future need, as it doesn't appear anyone in our pipeline will project in that role. I'd like for that acquisition to emphasize toughness and physicality over point production, as we should be fine in that regard over the long haul.

Bottom pairing/depth: Stuart is locked up through 2014, and I hope it's for much longer. He is perfectly suited as a bottom pairing guy who makes life tough on opposing forwards. Oduya is OK, but much like Hainsey, I don't see his contract demands being something we'd want to meet. His skillset is easily replaced, and we've got a whole glut of guys who could step into that role quite smoothly (most likely Flood). Speaking of Flood, I like his game, but he's older and will probably be replaced by Postma, Redmond, Kulda, etc., and thus could see him being traded at some point (though likely re-signed for next season). Jones and Meech are of zero value to the Jets future plans.

Summary:

Assets:

-solid depth all around, guys slotted in the right spots
-Enstrom (major trade asset as skilled puckmover)
-Bogosian (should be longterm fixture in top 4)

Liabilities:

-potential for Buff's contract to be an albatross
-potential hole(s) down the road in the top 4 (through Hainsey to UFA, ?Enstrom trade, ?Buff becoming a liability like he was early this year/late last year)

Future outlook:

-if the Jets are going to splurge on a high-endish UFA, I'd like to see it spent on a solid top 4 dman. This might not seem like a primary need at this point, but it's never a bad idea to build on a position of strength.

Goalies:

Pavelec
Mason

Really not much to say here, we're sitting pretty good in this position. Pavelec still needs work on his consistency, but he's proven that he's a goalie you can win with. Hopefully we work a smooth and painless deal out with him, although arbitration is a possibility. Mason is probably not worth keeping around as a backup at his price tag. He's fine in that role, but there are any number of UFAs that could take his place for cheaper until Pasquale is ready.

Your Mind
I think Little could be our #1 center in the future.
Depends on a couple things.

1) How Scheifele develops
2) Who we do sign as a UFA?

But we defenatly need a true scoring winger.
Be it in the draft, or a UFA (if possible) we need one.

Those are 2 great posts Hank.

I mostly agree with all of it. I think you might have sold Burmi a little short, but time will tell. I have to continually remind myself that he just turned 20 and has a lot of maturing to do (physically). He reminds me so much of Datsyuk with his lateral ability and willingness to dig in the corners despite not being a big guy. It took Datsyuk a long time to learn how to be effective in this league and the same might be true for Burmi.

As for Enstrom, I would be fine with re-signing him long-term if the price was right, but you are correct that we lack legitimate top-3 talent. I wouldn't be against moving him to address that need. Unless we get lottery picks in the coming years, there is no guarantee that we'll develop our own top-3 talent without getting lucky.

Antropov = the worst deal on bang for your buck.. i can not believe hes making over 4 million. only time he scores is when hes in the right place at the right time. i hope after the 2 years they give him up or find some way to trade him in the mean time to get something better for the money..altho i dont think anyone would touch him for 4 mil

He's one of our better and most reliable forwards, in my opinion. I'd say his fair market value right now would be between 2.5-3 million, so approx. 1-1.5 million overpaid in my own personal opinion. No big deal though considering how low our team payroll is.

I fail to see the logic in the Antropov hate.

My Antropov hate is because of this

SLOW..he cant challenge anyone who gets the puck from him thats more than 2 feet away.. hes just so slow. the team has to rely on others getting the puck back.

4 mil.. thats just way too much of an amt for what he does for our team. his points for us do not imo earn him 4 mil.. or over 2 mil in my opinion his pay roll should be 1 to 1.5 million.

He seems to only try in certain situations

through 39 games he only has 8 goals..look up other 4 million dollar players and im sure you will find them with way more goals.

my biggest pet peeve is his speed..its painful to watch him .. he will never be on a break away because others will catch up to him in a few seconds. the only good thing about him is his size and he is able to get the puck out of the corners for us and control is in controlled situations. to me ..thats not enough for 4 mil.

Well - let's see: here are a set of stats of points vs salary, and $$ per point. I've cherry picked players from 3.5M to 4.5M in salary (IE: around Antro). This is for last year at around the mid-year mark, but Antro's salary is the same, and he's on a similar pace for points this year (projected to finish between 46-50 points for the season)

If you sort it by dollars per point, Antro finishes fifth amongst the players that make +/- $1M of what he makes. Again, this is for last year, but I doubt it's that much different this year given that he's on the same pace for points. If I can find stats for this year, I'll repost. My point though: he's not as "useless" as many are making out, not even for the money.

It's not always about the salary or cap hit - this year, it doesn't really matter, as the Jets are no where near the cap. By the time the cap becomes and issue, after resigning some of the core UFA's, Antro probably won't be here. He's a useful piece for the Jets at this stage, IMHO.

Good Work YWGinYYZ.

Thanks Huffer. Here are some numbers I pulled from multiple sources and munged together into one table (via Python, if there are any dev geeks out there). I still think that Antro provides reasonable value for the short term. Could his contract be better, given his point production? Of course. Does it hurt the Jets right now in terms of salary or cap? Not really. He's providing comparable value in terms of points per game to player like Doan, Michalek, Stasny, Semin, Heatley, etc, etc. There are definitely players that are better value, but there are a lot of "home grown" players in that list, that never went through UFA negotiations, etc.

Columns are sortable in the table.

Here are some comparables for Antropov - not bad company. EDIT: sort it by TOI - Antropov is 2nd lowest TOI of this grouping.

A player like Nic will always take some heat due to his sloth-like style. You have to put top 6 linemates with him or he will become a liability in the lineup and on the salary cap.

IF the Jets can manage to get 15-20 g's and 50+ pts out of him in a 2nd line role until the end of his contract (Jul 2013), then paying him 4.5 mil/yr won't feel as bad.

That said, I'm betting that in 2 years when his contract is up, so will be his time in Winnipeg and the NHL.
