Named interim GM after O’Connell’s ouster, Gorton from nearby Melrose, had a busy few months before Peter Chiarelli took over. Gorton remained with the B’s as Chiarelli’s assistant GM until let go during the summer of 2007. He signed on with the NY Rangers and is currently that team’s Assistant Director of Player Personnel (to Stratford, N.H.’s Gordie Clark, former Bruins player and chief amateur scout). Working closely with chief amateur scout Scott Bradley, Gorton and the rest of the Bruins scouts put in place a major part of the franchise’s future success at the draft (Chiarelli was still at the Ottawa draft table) and during the early summer of 2006 before Chiarelli was released to the Bruins.

Gorton’s legacy:

Tuukka Rask, G- Gorton’s one trade as Boston GM was a big one, and it occurred in Vancouver at the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He swapped 2004 Calder Trophy-winner Andrew Raycroft to the Toronto Maple Leafs even-up for Rask, who had been that team’s first-round pick the previous summer. The Bruins had coveted Rask and were preparing to take him when the Leafs called the Finn’s name just one pick before (the B’s ended up taking Lashoff).

Zdeno Chara, D- Before Chiarelli was fully on board, Gorton worked to sign Chara, the most coveted free agent of the summer. Although L.A. reportedly offered more money, Gorton convinced Chara of Boston’s vision and plan more effectively, and the huge Slovak instead signed with the Bruins. This was important, because the team had endured a reputation during the O’Connell years of being a less-desireable place for free agents- Jeremy Roenick took less money from Philly to sign with the Flyers over the Bruins. Chara’s decision sent the message to Boston fans that things were changing.

Chara's agent Matt Keator is based in Massachusetts. Keator is also the advisor for Chris Kreider. Can Gorton talk to Brad Richards?;)

We have discussed Gorton here before. Rangers assistant director of player personnel since 2008. He joined the Rangers as a pro scout in 2007 after getting fired from Boston. Gordie Clark and Gorton run the Rangers personnel department.

Selected Kessel,Lucic and Marchand in the first 3 rounds in 2006

Andrew Raycroft for Rask

Signed Chara and Savard as free agents

Peter Chiarelli was still under contract to Ottawa and couldn't join them into after July 1. Mike O'Connell had been fired and Gortion was the interim GM.

Unsung hero.

Dolan you better be paying attention

If/when the Rangers win the cup this year, Sather should step down and give Gorton the GM job. Bruins are going hard after Gorton now.

Heck, even if we don't win the cup (knock on wood), give him the GM job anyway.

You'd think Gorton wouldn't go back to a team that treated him like ****, but if LeBron can go back to Cleveland anything is possible, especially if it means he'll be the GM with full control.

I don't know what Sather is thinking but I really hope he's thinking it's time to retire. Just give JG a huge raise and letter of intent to hire him as the next GM

Boston fired him...why would he go back?

I think Bostons going to offer Babcock GM + Coach.

gets to pick his team and coach it.

If he decides not to do it, then theyll keep Julien, and find someone else.

just my 2 cents.
