Is there an NHL record equivalent to what Steph Curry did to the 3pt record?

Although scoring 50 goals in 50 games is a milestone scorers strive for, I think Gretzky doing in 39 games is a good comparison. The next best was Gretzky himself (like Curry with his record) at 42 games. The next closest is Lemieux getting it in 46 games.

Taking the other tack on 50 in 50, Gretzky scored 61 goals in his team's first 50 games. No one had done more than 50 in 50 before and the closest anyone else came was 54 in 50.

i'll go with Orr, even though it is a position specific record. 120 pts in 1969-70 beat the previous record of 64 (by Orr, the previous year).

Going away from scoring, take a look at the penalty minutes record.

Dave Schultz racked up 472 PIMS in 74-75 beating his record from 73-74 of 328.

Prior to him the most was Keith Magnusson in 70-71 with 291

Great perspective building.

The NHL equivalent is a little weird, as the 3pt line is a unique thing. It's a scoring stat within the overall scoring stat, but has a big importance to it.

I'd wonder then what the goals/assists breakdown looks like to what the norms of the previous record.

That being said, it's important to note that Harden (2,376) had more total points than Curry (2,375) this season. Looked this up hoping he won by a landslide, but no luck there lol

Yeah I knew slightly that the points total was close. Just a different way of getting the points, and having that way explode.

The baseball comparable from the other forum brought up various ways of getting on base which is comparable to the various ways to score NBA points, and Barry Bonds' record for intentional BB jumped huge during some years.

In the NHL, maybe a PP/3-on-3 who was an EXTREME specialist in those situations but thats as close as I can make up.

It won't happen. Offensive teams can't dictate the play like they can in basketball, save for on the PP.

It would be something like Ovechkin scoring 30 goals on the PP, which he was actually somewhat close to last year.

Already mentioned but the best comparison is Orr.

Orr moderately beats the defenseman scoring record with 64 points before completely crushing it with 120 (followed by 139) the next season.

You could even make a case for goals by defenseman. Sets record with 21 before crushing it with 33 the year after (same seasons).

I would think the kinda 3 point shot comparable like that maybe could be PPGs

you would think Goals:

But that would be in accurate.
In the NHL you have to have the stones to drive to the net.
30 shots in game.
7 in front of net get you 52% of goals.
8 in the triangle from center circles to top of circles gets you 33% of goals.
15% of goals from perimeter shots.

Basketball rewards avoiding the in key contact.
Here is 3 points for shooting from the perimeter and avoiding the contact down low.

Allways hated that.

Any goal net based game you are more repetitively rewarded the closer you are.
Not basketball.

So the answer is No.

Now if shoot out Goals counted as 1.5 goals in a players stats.
Then we could look at that.

3 PT shots are also harder to make. Just ask Shaq.

Curry played something like 4 minutes less a game than Harden

Funny, I see NHL accomplishments argued pretty strongly here and put down. But keep in mind Curry had a great season, he shattered the record, but its 1 season and he beat his own record. Kind of need to wait another season or 2 to see what Curry does, he may settle back down under 300 again (probably not :)).

Gretzky broke the points record and assist record and continued to break it, own it, redefine it. No different to what Curry is in the process of doing.

I think Gretzky's assist totals or Orr's defense man totals are similar.

Yeah he's amazing to watch, basket must seem the size of a sinkhole in his eyes.
I'd imagine in hockey terms it would be like someone who could snipe bar down from outside the blueline while at full acceleration.

Your hands are apart of your body, shooting a basket is much easier than using a stick to shoot under the bar.

You can't compare goals or assists to 3's.

The NHL equivalent would have to be a similar level stat, like hits or pp goals or something

Regular season scoring is such a joke when u construct a behemoth
Tell that to the Spurs.

It's not even true, they aren't fielding a vastly superior team to the other top 5ish teams in the league.
They just play the most complete team game.

While it's hard to exactly compare Curry's 400 to any singular individual season record. Gretzky did have 11 straight 100 assist seasons.

Orr and Mario both just have one and that's it.
So imo Curry would need to put down 260 for another 7 more seasons to match it in that regard.

But honestly 400 3pts would be more like a 200 assist season.
It's just incredible

Gretzky didn't score 6 goals in his last game though ;p

Gretzky scoring 50 goals in 39 games. The year before Mike Bossy scored 50 in 50 and it was a huge deal, as it had only been done once before in the 40s by Maurice Richard.

Then the next season Gretzky came in and demolished the 50 in 50 , the single season goals record (still standing ) and the Points record (which he himself beat)
