With Varlamov playing recruiter, Sorokin will probably come to North America next year. But with Greiss playing the way he is, don't know how NYI can let Greiss walk.

In such a scenario, Sorokin may become prime trade bait. What is he worth?

Why would you trade that guy? Isn't he supposed to be good? Why would you trade him over Greiss of all people? You can keep Sorokin as Varlamovs backup and he can take over the starter role when Varly declines. Greiss might not even be in the league in a couple years.

Isles need to keep him.

The minute you trade him away you’re going to be looking for a Sorokin when Varly and Greiss are old af.

Because Isles could use more offensive punch and with goaltending set if Griess is resigned, Sorokin is a valuable trade chip. Trade from a position of strength.

Greiss is going to be 34 years old in January. You don't trade a 24 year old goalie with starters upside so you can re-sign your backup...regardless how he is playing.

NY will play out the year with the duo they have and hope for a long playoff run, then Greiss will move on and Sorokin will come over. Seems pretty simple.

Like Shesterkin and Samsonov, Sorokin will likely get some AHL time. That will buy you at least a bit into next season, if not the full year.

For me, it's no comparison. If we're looking at a 31 year old starter, a 33 year old late bloomer, and a 22 year old potential starter who has produced at every level he has played at, either the 31 year old or the 33 year old are the odd one out. It's not a slight to Varlamov (who has done admirably) or Greiss (who has done very admirably), but it's a long-term outlook.

Never mind Sorokin even started with the KHL at the ripe old age of 17. He tends to be a bit more aggressive than some of his fellow Russian goaltenders, but he's quick and has great edges. At the time (this was a year or so ago), he had a few things in technique to improve that made me favor Shesterkin over him (and not just being a Rangers fan), but it's been a year or so since. He is an excellent goaltender.

We're talking about as blue chip as you can get for a goaltender.

Great article, though a bit dated at this point.

You can never have enough goalies and Sorokin is the future. Hes probably the best and most accomplished goalie in the World outside of the NHL.

Greiss and Varlamov are both over 30. Sorokin is Just 24 years old and will be 25 at the start of next year. Sorokin is right now the islanders best chance at a True franchise goalie. Obviously nothing is guaranteed and there’s a chance Sorokin doesn’t come or doesn’t reach his potential. That being said, word around the organization seems unanimous from Lou to Trotz to Korn that they all believe Sorokin is the real deal.

Everyone has a value but right now it doesn’t make much sense for the islanders to trade Sorokin.

Trotz and Korn are goalie magicians. Greiss ( and to a lesser extent Varly) are simply benefitting from that.
A talent like Sorokin developing and playing for these two guys is somewhat scary for the rest of the league.
It would be really stupid to pass that up just because 34 year old career tweener Greiss is having a great season in a very favorable situation...

Will be very curious to see what happens with Greiss after this season. He very well could command 1b starter money on the FA market. Or will teams be a bit wary and think his numbers are inflated by Trotz and Korn? Will Greiss take less money to stay in a favorable situation that has been very kind to him the last few years?

That would be the wrong move. Isles need a soldid young keeper. Tommy G ia playing great but hia next contract will be over 5 mil aav and he will be 34 at end of season.

NYI will have to deal draft picks or prospects for help at the deadline because they don't have valuable excess roster players. I think Boychuk's age means we need to keep Scott Mayfield, and I think NYI will need Leddy if they're going to compete this year. Still, Sorokin won't be one of those prospects to be traded.

NYI's most valuable tradeable assets are 1st round 2020, and Bode Wilde. (Bellows is worth nothing, and NYI need to keep both Wahlstrom and Koivula).

As good as he's been, I just don't see any way the Isles offer him anything - again, if the assumption is that Sorokin is coming over. I'm guessing that Sorokin goes right to the NHL and plays backup to Varlamov. He gets eased in as a backup in year one; if all goes well he moves his way up to 1A/1B in year two, and in year three he becomes the full-time starter with Varlamov serving as his backup.

They'll most likely use that freed up cap(not much, but every bit will help) on giving out raises to their big RFAs.

Greiss will go to Carolina. He lives there in the offseason and holds goalie camps for Military children. Plus they could use a vet goalie and Greiss has been an awesome goaltender for the Islanders.

1) Greiss will be 34 in Jan and will most likely be looking for a raise. If anything, Islanders would probably sign him for 2 years, keep Sorokin in the AHL for 1 year, then expose Greiss the following season. Or they will let Greiss go for nothing in the offseason.
2) Islanders have shown that team play can help whatever goalie is put between the pipes.

It would take a lot of deck shuffling for Carolina to make it work, I don't think the fit is there. If they actually managed to get rid of Reimer why not go for Lehner or Markstrom then, rather than Greiss. Greiss would be a good stop-gap for the team who has a clear #1 option going forward like Vancouver but Carolina would be better off either signing a clear #1 long term or going with Mrazek.
