I think it's more because he hasn't produced anywhere of note.

D1 U18 tournaments? Russian midget leagues? Kostitsyn hasn't put up against legit competition to date.

I would take either of them over Phaneuf in a flash. He is a stud defender, but Staal and Zherdev are amazing

I disagree, I would take Phaneuf way ahead of Staal. Its not even close. Zherdev is an unknown he could be great or he could be a floater.

(1) Phaneuf
(2) Zherdev
(3) Staal

wow....right now Bergeron is better, but Staal has the upside to be twice the player Bergeron is.

Staal is the most under-rated bluechipper in the NHL, period.

Compare him to Vanek, Staal, Bergeron, Brown, all drafted in the same class, yet all put up big numbers in the AHL.

The other player that is way to low is Anthony Stewart. This guy will be a very good power forward.

Why would "everyone have him listed at #1" when Zherdev produced only 5 points less in 15 less games during his rookie year, and is widely regarded as having a much higher upside? More overrating from the WJCs.

This is about potential IMO, not about who's doing better now or who played in the NHL the earliest, so I'd take Carter No. 1. I think he's going to be an absolute star.

I can't honestly comment because I haven't seen most of these guys but if you asked Sydney Crosby, he'll take about a tenth of a second to say Patrice Bergeron.

I am a huge Staal fan both as a person and player and saw him many times this past season and he looks like he is going to be very good but Bergeron although a different type of player would be my choice. And thats no disrespect to Staal who I am rooting for to have a great career.

Chuck Kobasew (I know not in the class but he was on Staal's line and I'm tossing this in because I want to :p: ) was tremendous and I can see him becoming a 350 goal over the next 10 year guy. He really looked like he has 'it'.

the guy didn't deserve to be on the first line, compared to Vanek, Staal and co.

I would never put Kostitsyn at #26, but #15-18 is good...

I'd take Staal anyday but agree Bergeron would be picked probably by more GMs and scouts who watch the game for a living. I am 10 minutes from work to Lowell and had mini season tix plan and took the kids to some of the Lockmonster stuff and met the kid. His parents should be proud- and I am rooting for him like any nonBruins player. Bergeron though has a unique game that doesn't show up on Hockey Guide Records and Stat Book.

Bottom line, I like them both, wish the Bruins had both- but Bergeron has more a complete game but I wont diss Staal because he should be very good. Bergeron is just the pick when you watch shift after shift.
