If Phoenix gets expansion. Is Murelo the owner?

I love the kachina design. And if they create a new team, they should adopt it.
So maybe there is a mythological creature that resembles the phoenix in the local native culture that could be used. Or an animal that would look great as a kachina design.

The thunderbird is the main avian totem in these parts, not the Phoenix. Plenty of awesome representations of them if you Google it.

Not as sure about phoenixes.

I have looked through the wikipedia articles that cover the mythological tales of the native tribes in arizona.
And none of them mentioned the thunderbird. I always thought that was Northwest and northeastern tradition. So that might be an option.
But also confusing for people.

The Coyote fits the native theme perfeclty thus its hard to choose another animal to use (coyote the trickster in hopi mythology).

I dunno.

But what about this one:

Great Blue Heron

60314281-480px.jpg

But that doesn't roll of the tongue at all ^^
That goes for a lot of other animals in AZ too: Coatimundi, Gila monster, etc.

And i don't think we wanna call the team Phoenix javelina do we?

wouldn't that down the road morf into T-Birds...we already have a D-backs

It does roll off the tongue easier than Thunderbirds, and certainly better on the chant

Lets Go T Birds

Or you could even say "Go Birds Go"... I'm frankly tired of mispronouncing "Coyotes" in chants... LOL

Well according to Visitarizona.com you have hummingbirds.
That could be an animal to choose (even though its not that cool).
Also available are: Bobcats ( i did not know that they live there), javelina (the more i read about them the better they get), bison (meh), gila monster (I really like how they look, but they are not that great for a name), Wolf/Wolves (love Wolves as a team name but might be too close to coyote for some), Kit fox, Ocelot (also interesting that they live in AZ) and Sonoran Proghorn.

Take your pick. ^^

They also reported a lot of unsubstantiated rumors in that process.

Try not to pretend that dropping relocation rumors every post season was "reporting what's happening"
Precisely. There needs to be a scorecard for how many things they got wrong so that one time they are right about something all their colleagues don't fawn all over them like some sort of great breakers of news. If they hadn't lied so much, we might have believed 'em on this one.

And apparently adored by a ton of salty Canadian fans glad to see the Yotes leave AZ.

Don’t let the cesspool that is twitter and vocal minorities online project those feelings. No one with any ounce of self respect should be kicking a fan going through this while they are down. This situation f***ing sucks.

There are more people who snowbird or own homes in greater phoenix area from Canada than there are these vocal individuals. For a lot of snowbirds, It’s not in general public domain yet - not everyone even on this board is following the news minute by minute. This is going to be hard hitting for more general public when it comes out. You guys are going to get empathy but also douchebags. My advice is to stay away from social media when things progress - It brings out the worst, not the best, in people online.

Much of those people have issues in their personal lives, never mind what garbage is spewed on social media, and negative people reside on both sides of the border.

My heart goes out to all of you guys and I fully understand if you want to be angry and delete the nhl from your mind until coyotes 2.0

It’s always the fans at the end of the day who suffer with these types of situations

I’ve got a lot of respect for many of the posters on here who have taken so much over the years especially since I’ve been on HFboards, in and out, over the years. @rt @XX @TheLegend … just to name a few that come to mind

I’ve been keeping quiet about this because this sucks f***ing ass. I feel for all of you right now.

It’s not f***ing fair. You deserve much, much better than this.

That said, this team was driven into the ground by EONS of mismanagement, broken promises (I’m looking at you Glendale), and just plain front office stupidity. This does not include the players and their direct support staff who have been f***ing amazing over the years.

Now I’m going to say this and it won’t be popular.

The team needs to start fresh from scratch across the board. The lazy and bad habits of the front office (that started way before the NHL took over the team) needed a torch taken to it as there’s been cancerous habits from over the years that just never was eradicated.

Current ownership needs to bring their a game to the land auction as they need to put the word out about the benefits of hockey in Arizona. The Tempe vote should have had people going door to door to sell the vote to the people (this is where Coyotes ownership failed miserably during this process).

Hockey works in Arizona (as you all will say ‘duh’ to this heh) but at this point the Organization needs a fresh start.

If this team comes back and uses the Arizona Coyotes brand I think they're fools. They need to set fire to it, bury the ashes and then plant a tree over it.

Best brand in professional sports, but it's toxic. Why start back up at a disadvantage if you really want the NHL to work in Arizona? I can hear the groans from the average Arizonan if "we're back!" were announced. I think it's a mistake.

Future NHL expansion to Arizona should distance itself as far as possible from the Arizona Coyotes brand and the overwhelmingly negative history. Sad because it's so great, but that's just the way I think it needs to be.

The idea of keeping his operations team employed and all the business infrastructure intact by basing operations out of Mullett with the Roadrunners is interesting. Reminds me of the turnkey Moose that made it so easy for the Jets to appear overnight.
The moving the Roadrunners to Mullett is causing some issues as now ASU is saying they weren’t told

Tucson is worried about think and ice being maintained for the Youth if they leave .. also the Mayor said no one discussed with them

The rink in Tucson has always been a problem. It doesn’t even have seats on all sides.

It will be interesting to see if Atlanta brings back the Thrashers name. I don’t think it’s toxic, or as toxic, but it will be telling. Plus they’ll have a team back first.

I think the problem with the Thrashers isn't so much that it's toxic or was toxic, it's just not that good to begin with. The Coyotes with the Kachina kits is objectively good, there's a reason they sold buckets of them after they brought them back. Thrashers? their sweaters were always meh, the logo was kinda cool but not particularly attractive at first glance either.

So, par for the course for the Meruelo companies... Zero communication, fumbling along heedless of any logical obstacles, making terrible decisions based on a complete ignorance of context, and thinking they're Mensa members.

I dearly hope that in five years the Hispanic Bill Wirtz is nowhere near this state.

So true. I’ve even been thinking that, as much as I personally love the Coyotes brand and the Kachinas…it really might be nice if/when AZ gets another team to just let it die off and start everything new. New name, logo, everything. Completely fresh start. Who knows though, after 4-5 years maybe that will be enough time to renew it and restart in a healthy way.

Man, you should write a book. I don't care what it's about. I'd read it and buy copies for everyone I know. You're an artist when crafting sentences.

Not going to listening to the entire PHNX yet, but I'm skimming through it. Started in the middle to hear Petey talking about the things the team would get for Christmas from the owners of the past like custom robes with the player's name and number, etc. Nice stuff.

Meruelo gave them all a certificate for one free night at the Sahara that even still had the fine print (restrictions & blackout dates apply.) The guy's christmas gift to his staff was nothing more than a way for him to make money off them at his resort/casino.

What a Douche!

Can't wait until I have time to listen to the rest, tomorrow.

If anybody can bring the team back and use the branding they have, because its the best you can have in AZ, its Shane Doan.
If anybody wants to succeed in AZ they will need him. He is the only face that could get the fans to care and mend the wounds of the past.

There are little to no alternatives to the Coyote and the kachina style If you ask me.

Now with more snark
I imagine a narrative will come out tomorrow, and then, in months or years, the truth. The issues that slowed the Coyotes down were initially financial and started when they traded Janney for no discernable reason. The salaries for players shot up without a cap. That is why he initially sold the Coyotes. We traded Selane for the same reasons prior to the team coming here. While we played at AWA, we were a team with a few bright stars and a lot of roleplayers. Scottsdale was the right place to build an arena, and the team did the legwork and won several elections but ran into a no-growth city council. I hope they enjoy the wallmart that replaced it. Then, the Glendale ED was a great idea. Still, with perfect Coyote luck, real estate crashed right as the arena was finished, and Westgate, as lovely as it is (really a great arena), didn't get the high-end condos, retail, and restaurants that would have allowed them to compete with the east valley. It still may not have worked, but there was a chance it would have had it all been bundled together. More uncertainty, bad owners, worse owners, speculative owners, the BK crappy teams with no scouting, and then the final coffin nails the 202 loop construction. My commute from downtown PHX went to 90 minutes a game. I do not defend Murelo, and I really hope he takes the money and invalidates the 5-year-hold so someone else can take the team forward, but if he does make it happen, I have to give him credit and at least be open to another chance. I hope he will be smart enough to run the real estate and hire Shane Doan as team president, giving him a budget and staying away until the team gets firmly reestablished.

I think the one free night is lame .. should have been a week.. and more personal.

As far as the blackout out stuff , he likely just gave the certificates that were already mass produced..
