Most important thing to keep in mind is we are not rebuilding or tanking! Most expensive roster in the league. Definitely not making any effort at all to tank or be bad!

That play by Jenson kills me. Why tackle a dude on to your goalie? If there was any chance Howard could be moved prior to tonight, it's probably gone now.

You don't go from making the playoffs for a quarter-century to automatic rebuild in one offseason. Takes time to shed contracts, older players, etc. This is just the beginning. To quote Babcock, there will be pain. But, this is what many around here wanted. Now you have to live with it.

Goalie sucked 3 softies. Blashill sucks more sheham on the power play more crippled kronwall. Less aa more Miller. Let's put Larkin with 2 human anchors. Why is he still here as a coach? But I guess the tigers proved that ownership doesn't care about winning anymore.

And the alternative wasn't an option forever. So we're at where we're at. Let's try and navigate this smartly.

Member when we would win 4 in a row and the lose 4 or 3. Win 2 lose 2. Win 3 lose 3 etc.? And with OTLs peppered in there. Can't believe I'm saying I miss even those days.:sarcasm:

no one wanted helm long term, sheham, glendonting, eriscons and host of other bad contracts, had he done his job free agent we would be competing even with dumbass as our coach.

"If you expect Cups, you're in the wrong league." - Ken Holland (real quote)

Context: He was comparing the league parity in today's game to that from the late 90s/early 2000s when a team like Detroit or Colorado were a lock for a long playoff run and possible championship.

no one wanted helm long term, sheham, glendonting, eriscons and host of other bad contracts, had he done his job free agent we would be competing even with dumbass as our coach.

As discussed previously in other threads, you still want guys like Helm, Glendening, and Abdelkader when you're tanking. They'll play hard every night and stick up for the young players. You can't dump everyone. There's still a cap floor. The situation is entirely salvageable. I don't blame Holland for trying to reload year after year until time was up. If you think you have a shot at the playoffs you go for it until the wheels fall off.

Yeah, and it was pointed out that we could make the cap floor easily without Helm and/or Gator, while still having several vets around either because they were/are better players w/ good deals gone bad or because they are dirt cheap to keep around.

Maybe they could? Who knows what the cap and free agency will look like a year or two from now. You're not getting Vanek-like players on one-year deals if you're a bottom team, either. The idea that they can replenish the roster year after year with one-year deal reclamation projects isn't possible. Players like Abdelkader and Helm are good role models for all the young kids coming in. You don't want to become the Oilers 2.0.

We JUST scraped into the play offs like the last game or two of the season for the last 2 years. Weve barrelled out first round for 4 is it?

We had the opportunity to choose to do the rebuild earlier. We didnt which is fine. One last crack. We were given the opportunity to rebuild this offseason big time when Datsyuk decided to leave. We did not and now we not only stuck with the most expensive team, but seriously glut of low end forwards on middling deals that last a long time.

It'll be a long time before we have a hall, RNH and mcdavid caliber players.

Even wi5th trading hall away, we don't,have the top end talent the oilers have.

 Making the playoffs is the goal in Nashville. It's the goal in Carolina. It's not the goal in Detroit. The lowered goal post was put there by Ken Holland because he was too tired and comfortable to rebuild the roster to the point where we can once again compete for Stanley Cups.

If he retired like he said he would when Lidstrom retired the playoff streak would be over - just like it will be after this year - however we'd be much further along to the real goal in Detroit: competing for Stanley Cups.

He sold a whole bunch of people hope that he could rebuild on the fly. It was laughable back then and it's laughable to hear people justify the past 5 years that have gone right down the drain and put us further in the hole to actually becoming good again.

Finishing mid pack of none playoff teams has to be the most efficient strategy in hockey.

Sometimes doing the right thing hurts. You take a short term loss in order to set up long term gain.

I'm starting to come to terms with this years team. Hard to see what's really the issue when it seems to be a mixture of pretty much everything. Individual players are ineffective, goaltending is inconsistent (Mrazek), lack of structure, and the powerplay is dead last I believe? Blashill is far from an amazing coach but you can see the players are just outmatched most nights on offense and defense. The Wings are just a bad team and sitting about where they should be in the standings.

Drafting and development have been the real disappointment. Pretty much an entire era for the Wings that should be in their prime carrying the team have under achieved. Nyquist, Tatar, Sheahan, Jurco, Smith, Dekeseyer.... pretty sad group

LMAO this is too perfect

Define short term? Because I don't think people understand how long a rebuild could take. Colorado has basically been rebuilding since 2009. They're probably looking at another rebuild. With the added lottery system it could be a long, long time before this team is ever good again. Not only do you have to win the lottery, but you also hope the guy you draft is a generational player. Rebuilding should be your last resort. When you've run out of options. Seems like that is where the Red Wings are right now.

Well Holland did an outstanding job in the off season shedding contracts and older players.
