Damn is right.

When you have the time.
Google. Former jockey Sydney Underwood.

Paralyzed in a spill in New Jersey a long time ago.
I checked Equibase. She must have ridden at Monmouth earlier that day and then Atlantic City under the lights. And her other mount that night was a winner. Had a 2-win night two days prior at AC. How life can change so quickly.

Yes. It was such a long time ago.
If I recall correctly
She was on the rail in a turf sprint
and pinched going into the turn and
went down suddenly over the horses‘ left shoulder.
She had no time to react.
I knew it was bad then and still remember it today.

Good article today at the Paulick Report
on the computer generated rebate betting.

At least it is out in the open more and more now.

Horse racing management will eventually have to
deal with it.
Then again they probably won’t.

Won’t tackle the drug trainers. So this rebate betting
wont be a high priority.

The regular horses players will just continue to get screwed.

c’est la vie

I will look into it later and reply. A couple of articles caught my eye: Dale Romans in support of HISA and perhaps that is connected to what you stated and also the fluff piece on Jeiron Barbosa who rode at Gulfstream. That kid should have a bright future. Whether he wins the Eclipse tomorrow night, time will tell but I found it surprising the amount of articles handing the award to Jose Gomez. It isn't like Maryland plays back-seat driver to New York in these awards but Barbosa to me has been brilliant.

Barbosa could become the 13th Maryland-based rider to win the apprentice Eclipse and first since Alexander Crispin in 2020. Other to do so include Hall of Famers Chris McCarron (1974) and Kent Desormeaux (1987) as well as Ronnie Franklin (1978), Alberto Delgado (1982), Allen Stacy (1986), Mike Luzzi (1989), Mark Johnston (1990), Jeremy Rose (2001), Ryan Fogelsonger (2002), Victor Carrasco (2013) and Weston Hamilton (2018). Both Carrasco and Crispin continue to ride in Maryland.

I suppose that is the benefit of fixed odds and how you get what you bet rather than the changing element that is parimutuel wagering. We all get frustrated when seeing odds move in an unfavorable direction after the fact. It is a very complicated issue. The handle generated from computers is likely large -- larger than perhaps some will admit and maybe that is a reason for the lack of specifics from where handles derive -- but as frustrating as that technology can be to old-school or more devoted bettors, that is something for tracks to face and hopefully integrate younger personnel in directing the sport's future without destroying what we love. Funny, an old-timer said to me not long ago that every sport has changed and not for the better -- not atypical for someone to hold onto the past as we likely all do it or will as we age -- but he said the one exception is horse racing. The sport has been tested often and still survives but maybe that fixed odds option is a wave of the future. I don't have the perfect answer to this matter,

Bob Baffert can once again enter horses at New York's major tracks.
The Hall of Fame trainer's one-year ban by the New York Racing Association ended Wednesday, allowing him to enter horses as soon as Thursday.
"I was disappointed they even did it, but it's water under the bridge," Baffert told The Associated Press by phone.
He was suspended last June for repeated medication violations, although none of them occurred in New York. He was barred from Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga. A panel credited Baffert for time served for an initial suspension, which allowed him to return this week.
Aqueduct is currently holding its 44-day winter meet that runs through March 26. Baffert doesn't typically run horses this time of year in New York; he targets the biggest stakes races at Belmont in the spring and Saratoga in the summer.

Good crowds at Gulfstream this week.
lit will be crazy tomorrow on Pegasus day.

With the purse increases. 87 thousand for MSW’s.
We are seeing full fields and good quality horses
on the turf course.
Which wasn’t the case the last few years.
No more waiting until spring.

Weather has been great with hardly any rain.
Turf course seems to be holding up
really well. The course is playing speed.

Good meet so far.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Dylan Davis rode four winners. He finished 7 4-2-0.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Sandino Hernandez, Jr. has a small stable and has operated for over 20 years. He is hot at this meet going 8 4-0-2. He is 18 4-3-3 since the start of last year. Maybe he knows where to place his horses but that is a solid mark. The prior two years he won four times with 45 starts; quite the difference.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Florent Geroux rode a winner for the 2,000th time. He became the third rider to win a race for the 2,000th time in less than a week joining Tyler Gaffalione and Junior Alvarado. Geroux is 4-3-3 with his past 10 rides at FG.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 1: Arden'sluckyto be (Bryson Butterfly/Diane McClure) not only won but basically wired the field. Not often I can say this but my 30-to-1 shot won. Second-time-out was the sole reason for the selection. The trainer has won slightly over $1 million in over 30 years of training. She starred today as did the 17-year-old jockey.

  • Race 5: Doppleganger (Jevian Toldeo/Brittany Russell) was under the care of the excellent trainer for the first time after he spent his career under Bob Baffert's watch (and Tim Yakteen's during the former's suspension). The colt got in some early trouble but rallied strongly. Not often where it can be said it was a trainer improvement moving from Baffert's barn to someone else's but in this case with Russell that is a truism. OK, that is part levity but she is a personal favorite. Doppleganger got some Kentucky Derby buzz last year and ran in five graded stakes of seven total prior to today.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. was named Eclipse Award winning Outstanding Jockey for 2022 at ceremonies last night. Today, he won three times.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Angela Aquino had a horse on today's card and though I was unfamiliar with her, I came across impressed by her communication skills. Just found out she worked publicity at Los Al at one time. The horse didn't factor but she did. Always good to see small trainers represented on the feeds.

Race 2 on Sunday at Santa Anita could be the worst betting race of the young year yet has plenty of implications. Bob Baffert sends out four of the five runners and there could be buzz for the Kentucky Derby following this race.
  1. Havnameltdown—Juan Hernandez—124
  2. Faustin—Ramon Vazquez–120
  3. Fort Warren—John Velazquez—120
  4. Man Child—Diego Herrera—120
  5. Gilmore—Mike Smith–120

Mott and Maker win 3 each on Pegasus day.
Mott and Alvarado are a dangerous team.

Love Maker.

He is one of the best trainers and the absolute best claiming
trainer. Claims horses for 40k, 50k with the intention
of moving them into stakes company. Gets a profit within
a race or two. Pretty amazing.
None of this claiming for 20k and dropping in for 16k.

I am happy for Junior Alvarado. Longtime a personal favorite. He was an integral part of the Moment of the Year last year by riding Cody's Wish and the boy named Cody who has Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, And now this! Both wins on the national stage. He has come a long way since Calder and the Illinois tracks.

Great day of weather. Awesome day. I did notice the NBC feed seemed about 30 seconds behind the simulcast feed. With all that said:

  • NBC vs. Simulcast: The feeds are vastly different with the entertainment angle seemingly as much a part of the home broadcast as the race; however, there seemed to be a significant different in timing between the Pegasus races today and maybe 30 seconds or so. There is perhaps no better sport to enjoy at a facility than racing, with the attention given by the track hosts and the professionalism afforded the viewer. But the non-stop action at a simulcast venue on an active Saturday is something suggested for novices of the sport.
  • Steve Asmussen had a 5-win day with victories at three tracks. He is 15 wins away from 10,000.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Jamie Ness shipped two horses to New York and both won. He doesn't ship to NYRA often and certainly can be his own worst enemy but the man wins as evidenced by his placement as the third winningest trainer in North America last year. He had a 3-win day, also one at Laurel.
  • Race 6: My Sweet Wife (Frankie Pennington/Michelle Nevin) won from back of the pack. A rare visit for Philly-based rider Pennington.
  • Race 7: Repo Rocks (Andrew Wolfsont/Jamie Ness), the second longest shot on the board at 10-to-1, romped by more than 8 lengths to win the $150,000 Grade 3 Toboggan Stakes. It was the rider's first career graded stakes win.

Meadowlands (New Jersey):
  • Race 2: Subject to one of the longest inquiries I can recall, certainly for trotters. The result was a dead-heat for victory.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 6: Cats Inthe Timber (Jeremy Rose/Brittany Russell) was the recipient of one of the best rides of the day. Just sensational athleticism including by the 3-year-old filly. No quit here!

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $43,886,536 was bet into the card which established a record for the young event.
  • Card: Seven of the 13 races were graded stakes.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode the card and ended 13 4-4-1. Since winning Jockey of the Year for 2022 two nights ago, he is 20 7-5-2. No Eclipse-winning hangover.
  • Bill Mott trained three winners.
  • Michael Maker sent out 10 horses in six races and won three times. Each victory was a graded stakes which included a 1-2-3 result in the ninth race. He ended 10 3-1-2. He had a fourth win at Aqueduct.
  • Race 12 Atone (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Michael Maker) won the Grade I $1,000,000 Pegasus World Cup Turf.
  • Race 13: Art Collector (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the Grade I $3,000,000 Pegasus World Cup Stakes at 15-to-1. Art Collector is a hit-or-miss horse going 21 11-1-0 and earning in excess of $4 million. Alvarado has had much success in his career but the past three months are perhaps his most noted. If you were lucky enough to hit the $2 pentafecta, go collect for $263,000+. 558 Rainbow 6 tickets remained active heading into the finale and each winner collected $17,000+ for every successful $.20 wager.

Louisiana Downs (Louisiana):
  • Race 6: Mine That Bird broke his maiden in his 10th try. Not that Mine That Bird but the quarter-horse runner of the same name.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $11.8 million. Bettors like this track.
  • Race 10: Arabian Knight (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) wired the field to win the $750,000 Southwest Stakes. This race is the second of four Kentucky Derby preps held at the track. The Uncle Mo colt was out for the second time and has never trailed. Baffert won this race for an existing record six times. He was at the track to meet-and-greet.

  • Race 8: Gunite (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) won the $150,000 King Cotton Stakes.
  • Race 6: How is it that a $1 exacta paid $92 but the $.50 tri returned $1,025? Quite the spread.
  • Race 5: Wet Paint (Flavien Prat/Brad Cox) won the $150,000 Martha Washington and with it points awarded to the Kentucky Oaks.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $11 million.
  • Juan Hernandez was exceptional going 8 4-3-1.
  • Race 8: Newgrange (Juan Hernandez/Phil D'Amato) won the $200,000 Grade 3 San Pasqual Stakes.
  • Race 2: Faiza (Ramon Vazquez/Bob Baffert) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Las Virgenes. The 3-year-old daughter to Girvin is 3 3-0-0 lifetime. The winner received 20 points towards entry into the Kentucky Oaks.

Did you see the result of FG8 on Friday? $157 winner. The $1 double paid $61.50. Chalk preceded the bomber but how often does a double pay less than a win?!

The talk is over $3,000,000 estimated.

A highly anticipated mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 pool will be held Sunday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.
The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot pool stood at $828,941 following Saturday's Pegasus World Cup card, on which the popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the 17th racing day in a row following a single-ticket jackpot hit for $533,783.63.
The Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is expected to climb into the multi-millions. On mandatory-payout days, the entire Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the wager's six-race sequence. The carryover jackpot is usually only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
