Justique spiked a fever and will be scratched from Race 6.

Race 8 is a Kentucky Derby Prep race. Sham will go down in history as running the second fastest Kentucky Derby on record in 1973 -- and yet not having won the race due to the presence of Secretariat.

In today's race, Bob Baffert's barn is the focus with an embarrassment of riches. He has four of the six starters.

Mike Luzzi is a wily pro. He doesn't get many chances at wins in recent years but he still gallops and occasionally will find a chance. Happy Sophia was ridden by Romero Maragh last time out after a few tries under the direction of Luzzi. Good job by Luzzi.

Well all right. Bob Baffert won at 16-to-1 with the longest shot on the board. The all-Baffert $.50 tri paid $63.

Support and hope to jockey Joree Scriver, a 21-year-old who was paralyzed earlier this month in New Mexico following being dismounted in a race. She is from Washington state and had won meets at smaller regional tracks Grants Pass (OR) and Elko (NV). Putting things in perspective once again, a tough sport with gritty riders.

There is a significant amount of high-priced talent in Race 8 on Saturday at GULFSTREAM including a $1.6 million purchase out for the second time and under Gaffalione. Also, Klaravich spent $430,000 on another in this race. Seth Klarman spends, but that is on his high-side. Interesting to see what Chad Brown has there.

Hot Rod Charlie was a gamer who developed a bit of a reputation as a horse who hit the board more so than anything. He established exceptional credentials and won $5.6 million. He finished his career 19 5-5-4. His legacy includes a first try at graded stakes in which he placed at 94-to-1 in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He finished third in the 2021 Kentucky Derby. He won in Dubai in a World Cup prep in which he finished second in the $12 million race. Now it is onto his next part of life where he will sire in Japan.

The late money at Gulfstream is getting ridiculous.

In the 6th at Gulf today. 7 1/2 on the turf.

Liked the 1. Had a turf race at KD and ran OK after running off pre race.
Just won on the synthetic and it looked to me the jock had plenty of horse left.

Don’t like to bet a horse off a maiden score but I thought he had a shot.

He was 15 to 1 morning line but took some action and was 12 to 1 going into
the gate. So I thought he was live.

Race goes off and he’s third going into the first turn at 5 to 1.
WTF?
Goes from paying 26 bucks to 12 bucks In a flash.
Total BS. These rebate, algorithm guys suck.

He finished second but the exacta paid double what it should have.
Winner paid 26 and he paid 6 in the middle.
So the exacta should have paid $150 to $170 in an 11 horse field.

Actually paid. $322.00
Which I had a few bucks on.
So I got lucky.

So they hit him across the board but not in the exotics.

I wonder what the exacta would have paid with him on top?
Probably less then it should have.

Cant wait for fixed odds to be instituted all over the country.

^ That was an issue at Gulf about five years ago and one of the members of staff explained late money from source such as international. It is garbage. No handicapper likes it. The fixed odds has been an option at Monmouth for about a year, the solo track in North America as I recall. Otherwise, it can be disturbing as you described.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 3: I Can Do It (Jhonny Paredes/Robert Gamber) won at 7-to-1 and gave the trainer his first win in 26 starts this year. Thunder Boss (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell), the supposed 1-to-2 layup, finished fourth of five. Turns out to be the rider's first career win and on his 21st birthday.
  • Race 8: Pharoah's Baby Gyal (Jevian Toleo/Brittany Russell) won by more than 10 lengths in a pulsating and rhythmic victory under a hand ride. The daughter to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah is 4 2-1-0 lifetime. Another reason why Dave Rodman is one of the best callers in the business, listen to him describe the fight for place positions as the camera focuses on the winner; sometimes, that is an afterthought but can be important to those who wager on exotics.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: More than $5 million bet.
  • Chris Hartman's stable was sizzling today going 5 3-1-0.
  • Race 1: Shake Rattle Nroll (Cristian Torres/Robertino Diodoro), a 3-year-old Violence filly, seemed very comfortable in her 3 1/2 length debut win. Violence babies have been among personal favorites for a while.

  • Race 3: Enchanted Mile (Ramsey Zimmerman/Chris Hartman) gave the rider his first win since 2017 with his second mount since that year. He had substance abuse issues in his distant past which may or may not have been a reason for his recent absence. Vic Stauffer, track caller, made note.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Canceled Cards: Saturday (Jan. 14) and Monday (Jan. 16). Racing is a go tomorrow (Saturday) and also Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 20-22).
  • Race 2: Brutto (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won a $26,000 purse. Baffert had the horse for five races before losing him to Sean McCarthy for the past two outings. Brutto won for the second time in eight starts. He debuted to a second place finish to Flightline in April 2021.
  • Jeff Mullins, Jr. had a remarkable opening day to his career with a storybook 4 3-0-1 day. He also finished third in one race at Golden Gate. His career mark is 5 3-0-2. Quit while he is ahead or ride the hot roll? In actuality, he is substituting for his day who is suspended 30 days until early February for a sample in a horse from last year.
  • Juan Hernandez went 6 3-2-0 in a strong showing today.

The Vox Populi Award was presented at Santa Anita. The story of the year in any sport for my interests.

Brittany Russell won the opener (4-to-1) at Laurel and went to New York (7-to-2) for a rare time and won the second race at Aqueduct. Well that is a nice start to a day.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Race 9: Occult (Dylan Davis/Chad Brown) won the $100,000 Busanda Stakes which is a Kentucky Oaks prep.

  • Manny Franco rode a natural hat trick in the first three races. He is 46 19-6-4 (41%/63%) at Aqueduct this meet.
  • Weather: Intermittent snow flurries but nothing affected the track.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Phil Capuano sent out four horses and two came back winners. He started his career this year following the retirement of his uncle Dale. He is the son to trainer Gary.
Meadowlands (New Jersey):
  • Harness: The colors and fonts are one of the best in the simulcast world. Easy to read. Yellow and white on dark blue with traditional fonts is two thumbs up.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $15 million.
  • Todd Pletcher had a 4-win day with three wins at Gulfstream.
  • Luis Saez rode five times and won three times for Todd Pletcher. He finished 5 3-1-1 for the trainer.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $8.4 million.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Canceled: Rain.

  • Hot Starts to 2023: Manny Franco is riding at a 37% win clip this year. Among the hottest barns are Anthony Farrior (Charles Town mainly, some Laurel), Robertino Diodoro (Oaklawn and Turf Paradise) and Chris Hartman (Oaklawn mainly). Also, Brad Cox is nearly invincible at Fair Grounds with a 33 15-9-2 mark (45%/79%).
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Dylan Davis rode four winners. He ended the day 6 4-1-0.
  • Race 3: Keen Dancer (Luis Rodriguez Castro/Randi Persaid) won at 10-to-1 with what I am nominating as ride of the day. And oddly, the rider was unseated steps after the finish line.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 2: The Haunted Room (Jeiron Barbosa/Justin Nixon) won by 8 1/2 lengths. Barbosa, who will once again be mentioned as my pick for bug rider of 2022, is even better this year winning at a 24% clip. Incredible.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $97,000.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Mike Smith rode three times and all returned winners. Not bad for anyone. Not bad for someone who is 57 years of age. A Hall-of-Famer and generational talent.
  • Race 1: Nice and smooth. Bob Baffert finished 1-2 in the Santa Anita opener winning with $3.55 million purchase Hejazi (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) who was sent off 1-to-2, went to the lead, faced challengers then glided home. Baffert's Worcester (Juan Hernandez) placed. The winner was bought for the largest price at any Maryland sale. Could be headed for Kentucky Derby preps.

1673834296696.png

  • Race 6: A goodie...

  • Race 7: Kirstenbosch (Kazushi Kimura/John Sadler) edged the $1,000,000 seller Ganadora (John Velazquez/Bob Baffert) to win the Grade 3 $200,000 LaCanada in a nail-biter.

@GKJ

The LeComte is out.

FAIR GROUNDS (New Orleans, LA) -- Saturday, January 21, 2023

Brad Cox is starting to seem like the Bob Baffert of the Midwest. Baffert for years, and in 2022-23 especially, has a barn brimming with young stakes-class dirt horses, and right now, Cox’s strings also are bulging with 3-year-old prospects.
Over the last couple months, Cox has sent out at least seven different 2-year-olds of 2022 and 3-year-olds of 2023 who either won or placed in a stakes race or are headed for one. Victory Formation and Angel of Empire ran one-two in the Smarty Jones on Jan. 1 at Oaklawn. On Dec. 26 at Fair Grounds, Cox won the Sugar Bowl, a sprint, with route-bound Corona Bolt and the two-turn Gun Runner with Jace’s Road. Hit Show became a two-time winner with a route allowance victory Dec. 17 at Oaklawn, and Verifying got a 97 Beyer, same as Corona Bolt, wining a two-turn Jan. 14 allowance at Oaklawn. Giant Mischief finished a hard-luck second Dec. 17 in the Springboard Mile but hasn’t yet worked back.
Even with his best 2-year-old from last year, Loggins, still out of action, Cox heads into the heart of the Derby prep season looking for spots to start all these horses, and he has two, including likely favorite Instant Coffee, for the Grade 3, $250,000 Lecomte on Saturday at Fair Grounds. Instant Coffee on Nov. 26 won the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes and is one of eight, along with the Cox-trained Fair Grounds maiden winner Tapit’s Conquest, entered in the 1 1/16-mile Lecomte.
The Lecomte is the first of three two-turn dirt stakes at Fair Grounds over the next two-plus months, followed by the Risen Star at 1 1/8 miles in February and the $1 million Louisiana Derby over 1 3/16 miles in March, and is the first race other than the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Churchill Downs’s Road to the Kentucky Derby awarding more than 20 qualifying points. The first five Lecomte finishers get 20-8-6-4-2 points, respectively, through the system used to determine the Derby field.

1673834706046.png

  • Steve Asmussen is debuting a $1.1 million Uncle Mo filly in Race 2. Tyler Gaffalione has the mount.
  • Race 12 is a Kentucky Oaks prep worth 20 points to the winner.
  • Race 14 is a Kentucky Derby prep worth 20 points to the winner.

Still no official word on the death of young rider Avery Whisman. Mike Smith took the news rather hard as the two established a professional relationship a couple or so years ago. Whisman was at the tracks in southern Cal but rode more so in Arizona, Maryland then PA.
