Husso

Where do we go from here?

  • Lyon starter, Husso backup

  • Lyon starter, Reimer backup, Husso needs a sitdown

  • Reimer starter, Lyon backup, Husso needs a sitdown

  • Reimer starter, Husso backup

  • Keep rotating all three

  • Give Ville the chance to redeem himself right away, he’s the best of the trio

Let's just say I haven't had a Wings goalie I thought was worthy of buying a jersey for since Osgood.

Like with Ned, I had optimism that Husso would take the reins with an expanded role and become a solid starter. Unfortunately that hasn't materialized and we're still playing goalie roulette while we wait patiently for Cossa to get his chance.

The most damning thing for Husso last night was his immediate frustration after missing the breakaway save. At that point the Wings still had the lead and things weren't panic time yet but you could immediately sense from Husso that he was feeling the frustration of this season, not just that game, in the moment. And that is an absolute killer to your mental game.

At that point in the game I want to see my goalie shrugging and going "Eh shit happens, they got lucky, we're in control."

Instead I saw, "Holy f*** nothing is going my way!" as he slammed his stick to the ice.
But what color is his spaceship?

Teams hire specialists all the time. Some stare at the play clock in football, to make sure a head coach takes a timeout or a quarterback snaps the ball before it reaches zero. Others monitor the number of fouls each key player has in basketball as the fourth quarter winds down. It's a very sensible approach to handle a given task that might otherwise escape attention or even be the Achilles heel of a staff.

You, my dear Bench, are officially hired to consult on when to pull the goaltender. Because I understand that nobody is good at everything, but I have no idea how half a dozen professionals can watch a meltdown, know it's having an effect on the guy between the pipes, and just let it keep playing out.

I'd say we could give you a white flag to throw, but tossing stuff on the ice tends to be ruled a delay of game. Maybe you just get to hit the button that plays the Price is Right losing horn over the PA system?

I would expect the numbers to be closer together when normalized for level of opponents. But I would still expect to see Lyon outperforming the others.
Husso just let in 6 to the Sharks..........

without getting into how they were outplayed in general....

three 2-on-1s, one breakaway and one 2-on-0 and your takeaway is the goalie got torched?
At some point we need to look at how the team CLEARLY plays better in front of Lyon and Reimer

People are missing the point here regarding Husso..

It's not that he isnt standing on his head..its that game after game he allows weak goals...the kind that kills a young developing teams confidence...he consistently fails to not make the key save..nothing to do with the big save..

100%. It’s basically the opposite of Grant Fuhr who even for that era had sometimes pretty meh GAA. But when he allowed 4 and his team scored 5 he completely shut the door. And when there was little run support he kept his team in the game. It’s weird, can’t explain it. But I think there is something to the idea of raising your game as goalie when your team needs you.

Keep rotating all 3 for now.

That alone should put Husso on notice that he is on thin ice and needs to play better.

If he still can’t get his game together…. I’m fine with waiving him in January. Can’t be carrying a dead anchor on your roster during the stretch run.

Pretty good situation for the team carrying a dead anchor who has played 14 games and being 3rd in atlantic

I just hope we aren’t becoming one of those teams like the Leafs and Flyers who go year after year looking for a goalie. It does look like Hart has it together so far this year for Philly. At least we have a couple of prospects in the system to hope for

We have always been a where's da goalie at team. So wouldn't be anything new that's for sure. Osgood was captain spacegoat.

I don't count short tenures like Hasek and Vernon. I remember in the Syuk/Zetts years wanting Luongo when he was looking to move from Florida.

I'd rather run with Husso and hope for the best. Wings don't have goaltending this season.

Why go with the worst of the 3. If all are up, then he should be the one in the press box every night. He has easily been worse then the other two and has proven he is not "our" guy for the long haul. To me you play the 2 of the 3 with the best stats/performance the 3rd guy is the odd man out. He has been about an .885 type goalie since his hot start last season. That start only last 15 or so games as well, that is a long stretch of bad/mediocre play. He also more importantly is giving up the most goals that NHL goalies should be saving. How many goals has he given up this year in the low to mid glove range which should never not be stopped on straight shots to the net. He has some of the weakest NHL goalie skills out there as far as glove and blocker are concerned, with positional play being really his only good attribute.

It's a crap shoot for any of them. They all suck. I just feel like Husso is the only one that has the best chance of coming around (if it is going to happen). Just playing Vegas odds, I think Husso is the bet. Albeit, there's no "saviors" among this group. Just betting on who might have the chance at sucking less if / can heat up.

This team certainly isn't built to make any impact in the playoffs. But I do appreciate Yzerman trying to continue to get better. Just got to keep low expectations and hope it gets better.

Can't really blame just the goalies here. It's the entire team defensively. They give up way too many odd man rushes, and the vast majority of those starts in the offensive zone from bad passes. It would be nice if the goalies stopped one or two of them, but when they happen at this rate, your goalie's save percentage is going to take a hit.
