Speculation: How many rookies should be on the 23-man roster?

i dont know ... to me "rookies" is to general of a statement. its more of an age thing.

Lehtonen is 26 years old
Barabanov is also 26 years old
these guys arn't really rookies

around the age of 22/23 i think players should not be considered rookies for the calder , but thats just me

I appreciate the fear of denting a pipeline, but if Lehtonen continues to show well overseas, his value in a trade increases quite substantially. He's an intriguing prospect. Should his season continue to be a success, I'd be hesitant to move him, but if he could be packaged with '?' to realize a need we have, might it be worth it?

This would be true if the Leafs' would use it as an opportunity to properly development them. Instead they will go through the season led by the quixotic belief that they are contenders.
