I personally think RNH is severely undervalued. 1st overall pick who was subjected to arguably the worst management group in the league when he came in.

He’s had ups and downs and seems to have found his niche as a Swiss Army knife do-it-all sort of player who should regularly put up 60-80 points. He plays the PP, PK and can switch between C and W.

I’m curious how other fanbases view him. Let’s try and keep this civil.

Ehhh...he works well for what Edmonton needs him to be. But i still don't think too highly of him as an individual player. I don't know that if you transplanted him to a random other team, that he'd be as successful or "valuable". He's versatile and flexible which is nice, but he's also still kind of lacking any particular standout traits to define a role or really drive a Top-6 line himself. He's improved, but is still kind of physically weak and a bit of a perimeter guy.

Like, i wouldn't want RNH as my go-to #2C. Fine as a Top-6W, but not super inspiring. So i don't know where that leaves him. I vote "Average Top-6 Forward". Kind of indifferent about him as a Top-6er, and as a 3C. He's not really what i'd want in either role, but he isn't going to hurt you in either role. So that seems about right to me. That's how i view him at least.

The last couple regular seasons he's relied heavily on PP production, with regular season scoring rates that are not even top six level.

Has made up for it on the PP and with some great playoffs.

Is he versatile or is he a specialist? If you're not that good at 5v5 then I'd say you're more a specialist scorer.

He’s had ups and downs and seems to have found his niche as a Swiss Army knife do-it-all sort of player who should regularly put up 60-80 points. He plays the PP, PK and can switch between C and W.

More like 50-70.

I'll let him actually top 70 before I change that view.

First line player

The type you hate to have had first overall in his year yet he didn’t bust

As a center, he's probably top 30-40 in the league. He's not a prolific 5v5 producer but he's a very good complimentary player on special teams.

As a winger, he's capable of playing on a top line, but ideally he's the third best guy on that line.

Since 18-19 he's 45th in league scoring, ~25th among centers, and 45th among all players. Generally I'd say he's a top 50 forward in the league.

He's a good player. Are there people out there thinking he's either elite or bad? I disagree with the OP in that he's probably one of the least controversial players out there in terms of what people think of him. I never see anyone holding his #1 draft status against him anymore, that was more than a decade ago.

How I view him is "a 1st overall pick who's never had a 30 goal season or hit 70 points, in over 11 years"..........a huge disappointment given his draft pedigree.

Last year RNH had 11 goals and 50 points for his 5.1m dollars. To put that in perspective, Michael Bunting made 950K last year and got 23 goals and 63 points.

To be blunt, they BOTH ride the coattails of star line-mates and are BOTH average top-6 players.

Ultimate multi tool. Can play centre, can play wing. Excellent on the PP, good on the PK, good at ES. Hes not elite at any one skill set, but hes good at everything (except faceoffs). Hes been a very effective player over the last 5 years. Since 2017 274 points in 332 games. Similar production to Nylander, Duchene, and Eichel in that time span.

I think he is a good top 6 player that is more valuable because he touches all areas of the game in a positive way

This season he has exactly 0 points when he isn’t on the ice with one of McDrai. Last season that number was 13, and the year prior it was 4 (according to Dobber). The last 3 seasons he has played roughly 25%, 30%, and 15% of his 5v5 time without them respectively.

RNH has proven to be a reliable complimentary piece to star players who helps cover for their deficiencies. Without a star player to match him with his play is underwhelming. Ultimately a useful player and exactly the kind Edmonton needs.

he's a 'good' 3C and a very strong winger for McDrai

For his cap hit, he's a valuable player. not a guy who will ever drive a top 6 line but a great passenger next to a superior talent

Like many have said, RNH is our Swiss Army knife:

- plays solid 2 way hockey
- able to play both C and W
- great on special teams
- largely mistake free and defensively responsible hockey
- almost always makes the right play

He’s not a line driver nor will he produce a crazy amount, but he’s an excellent second fiddle on any line and able to step into McDrai’s spot and not get caved in for short periods of time should injury arise.

I would assess him as a very good top 6 player and I hope he keeps lighting it up this year. I would also argue that the value in a player like him is only seen once they’re gone and it’s clear no one can fill their shoes. #keepnugeforever

Between very good and good. Never lived up to the hype of his rookie year, but still a productive and useful player.

League average top 6. He just doesn't do as well as I'd like on the eye test. He doesn't screw a ton up, but I don't see him driving much or creating much either.
