If you look at Friedman's 30 thoughts they are often sourced information although for obvious reasons he cannot name names much of the time.
Item #1 of his 30 thoughts is just his opinion without any sources and I wouldn't put much stock into it. I don't blame him, it is very difficult to follow the deeper nuances of all 30 teams in the NHL.
Item #2 however is an example of what he does well. We have specifics regarding Forsling's bonuses. This is good information.
'Hawks fans who follow this one team closely can probably better intrepret the information than a person trying to keep tabs on an entire league.
We've done the math on the salary-cap. We know it's the core plus cheap contracts and we can't afford a salary like Kruger next year. We know it's going to be very, very tight against the cap because of the bonuses, and it's been discussed that every few hundred thousand of bonuses that we can apply to this year's cap will be precious cap-space needed for next season.
Motte's demotion today is a step towards not spending $$$ unnecessarily. Every dollar counts.
The next shoe to drop IMO is Forsling heading to Rockford. It makes sense from a hockey standpoint since we have 7 healthy d-men on the big club and he should be getting as much ice-time as possible in the AHL.
Thanks to Friedman's article, we can also see the financial benefits coupled with the hockey side. There's no point in adding bonuses to the cap-hit based on games played by Forsling.
Unfortunately this piece is going to lead to National Enquirer-esque gossip on the main boards, proposing players who can't fit under the cap and even have contracts running into next year. Blech.....
