Didn't Terrell Owens dominate a Super Bowl on a broken leg? Being hurt is an incredibly weak excuse, and it would not be accepted by Leafs fans if the player in question was McDavid.

Really?

So every player should be able to play through anything, and it's never an excuse. So no matter the injury they should be 100% effective, no questions asked?

I didn't say I loved what has happened, or I didn't believe he should play through it better, but the reality is all players play through pain differently. I have played through injuries before, and with a lot of medical help to do it, didn't feel a thing. However, every situation, league, and player is different. It still does not take away from the reality of it.

I would have loved to see a Forsburg type tolerance, but who knows how much pain he can handle.

But hey, this is HFboards, and he will be crapped on, I get it. If I don't like what will be said, I am also free to leave, I understand.

If Matthews truly isn't 100%, that perception is not being helped by Babcock.
"I'm assuming that (Matthews) thought he was going to come tonight and dominate the game. That's what I thought,"

Is that what a coach says, or should say, if he knows his number one player is injured?

lol, every player is great at answering questions from the media. every player is trained on it when they come into the season. auston is great at handling the media, his answers are the typical ones you state above. it's a tough situation, gotta think the team kept him out after the headlines Simmons created when he got Matthews to quote "**** happens" lol. not too worried about the whoe media thing. what's more worrying is that line's play against chara and mcavoy. seems like they look defeated. chalk it up to experience gained i guess.
Wait, you just said "every player is great at answering questions from the media", and referenced Matthews' "s##t happens" in the same post. Who trained him to give that response?

Go back and view all his media scrums. He is great at them. He had a bad game and was frustrated and gave a brutal, but honest remark. It's one comment. He isn't suddenly horrible at media scrums. Holy overreactions.

Based on your analysis, the ones that are overreacting are the Leafs, if they barred him from addressing the media after the game last night.

So before it was Bergerons elite defensive play that was stifling Matthews, then Bergie doesn't play and Matthews still looks mediocre. Now it's some photo injury that's never actually been reported on thats the culprit. Here's an idea, maybe the player who can barely crack top 30 in scoring shouldn't be expected to be some point per game beast in the playoffs and he's playing exactly how he should be.

Dude just doesn't have the emotional maturity and mental toughness to take the really tough post game interviews. It's obvious he was too hurt to take an interview, why would he want to be on national TV with tears in his eyes. I see why he avoided the interview.

The poster is just pointing out the nonsensical crap that goes on between some of Oilers/Leaf fans, where every excuse is used to either try and justify why that player is better or why that player isn't doing more. However, majority of the fans know better and don't think, "Well, if the shoe is on the other foot, my player would be able to do this, or that."

lol, hey you could be right. he might. but we are not privy to that and you can't make assumptions on someone's character based off of a bad quote in a post-game presser. he'll be fine, so will everyone else. it's always tough when you lose. haters come out, the media comes out. everything is doom and gloom.

Credit has to go to Marchand/Pastrnak ... insanely underrated defensive players (more Marchand obviously)

and Riley Nash is a defensive specialist .... sooo it's not like he had an easy night

Yes it's always tough when you lose, especially when a fanbase puts expectations on you that are unrealistic for your ability. But here's the thing, the best leaders and player in the game take that interview. The fanbase and media expect an interview. Dodging that interview might be fine for Matthews emotional stability but it doesn't do anything for the team. I think we'll see this when the Leafs get hammered in Boston for Game 6.

This is on Kadri more than Matthews. He made the kid's job that much harder. Leafs will be back next year and much better if they find themselves another good defenseman. And theyre not technically dead yet so there's that
Gotta revamp for another first round playoff exit.

What is unrealistic, is to always expect a linear progression. Sometimes things just don't go the way one hopes. Matthews had a good performance in the 16-17 playoffs, maybe in 17-18 it's not meant to be and who knows in the future.

It's not?
After his first season I expected him to score 50 goals this year and 60 goals the next season, becuase he can only become so much better. :sarcasm:

He's been pretty invisible but the dude is 20 yrs old and everyone matures at a different rate.

It's a bit more concerning to me that it's more of an effort thing - seems to be coasting at times out there but again that's just mental maturity that should grow with age.

He should be in many more playoff rounds and I'm sure he will improve, he's a great player and still learning from his experiences.

Kessel looked like he was about to cry being a Leaf. Phaneuf didn't have a great time either. What's the Oilers got to do with Matthews playoff thread?

Lol the Toronto media literally had a fake news story about Kessel and ****ing hot dogs.
