I don't think he's really struggled... But I also don't think he's really made very many impact plays. A typical Matthews play has been to deke around for some time, some impressive stick / board work, then pass to the D at point. That's a low impact play and essentially defers to others.

There is no other Bergeron in the league, but Backstrom got the best of his matchup with Matthews last year.

He had 5 pts in 6 games, 4 of those were goals. You don't need to be over point per game to be considered great.

Bergeron is arguably the greatest defensive forward ever. Wouldn't put him at #1 as I think Gainey was even better, but Bergeron is in the upmost elite all-time in that regard.
