Guy seems to really be taking his opportunity and running with it. If he has a big season in GR, he has to be in line to get a long look at a bottom6 spot next year. Holmstrom has been pretty productive for a rookie on small ice, too.

This is the biggest prospect surprise for me atm. Good.

Turner Elson "Gordie Howe Hatrick" provides Griffins comeback victory this morning vs former team

The Grand Rapids Griffins were physically and mentally late this morning to the arena as the San Antonio Rampage took it to them in the first period, but got the message from Coach Nelson and made a nice comeback to make the day great as the Griffins beat the Rampage 7-4

1st period: Griffins were sleep waking early as Hicketts was enticed by a Rampage player on a delayed hand pass call in his own zone and the Rampage created a turnover in the Griffins end and Julien Natel shot one through the legs of a sleepy Coreau at 1:58 to take an early 1-0 lead. Griffins tied the game up at 5:09 as Tyler Elson got a nice rebound off a Hronek shot and buried it past Ville Husso to make it 1-1. Rampage took :34 to retake a 2-1 lead as Kamenev made a nice flip pass over the Griffins blue line and hit in stride to Agozzino and he buried off the short side goal post and went in past Coreau. Griffins had a pp chance just past the half way point but could not convert. Griffins were caught up nice and Duncan Siemens made a perfect pass that got by Elkins and Hicketts and right to Tage Thompson as he broke in from the Griffins blue line all alone and badly beat Coreau to make it 3-1 at 14:36. Coreau was replaced by Tom McCollum after the goal as Coreau made only 3 saves in 6 shots. Rampage had a pp chance about 2 minutes later, but the Griffins killed it off.

2nd period: Rampage took 2 early penalties :57 apart giving the Griffins a 2 man advantage and it took :12 for them to convert. Matt Lorito and Matthew Ford got behind the net as Lorito gave the puck to Ford and Ford made a nice cross ice pass between the Rampage d-man through the crease to a wide open Lorito and he buried it in the open net to make it 3-2 at 2:28. Griffins had another pp chance at 5:38, but was cut short on a Hicketts slashing call at 6:25. Rampage caught Lashoff and Russo sleeping at the Griffins end off the face off as Toninato cleanly won the draw from Svechnikov and passed it over in front of the Griffins net and Natel beat McCollum at 7:04 to score his 2nd of the game and give the Rampage a 4-2 lead. Rampage had a pp chance at 9:55 only to be short lived at 11:17 with a penalty of their own to make it 4 on 4. Off the face-off, Ford won the draw cleanly and the puck went to Russo and he one-timed a blast from the point and beat Husso at 11:20 to give the Griffins life again at 4-3. Griffins back on the pp just :17 later giving them a 5 on 3 chance. Griffins finally tied the game up at 4-4 at 13:25 as Bertuzzi got the puck deep to Holmstrom and he was 2 on 1 deep in front of the Rampage goal and he slid it over to Svechnikov and he one timed it from inside the circle and cleanly beat Husso to tie the game. Ranford and Bertuzzi got together after the whistle and both were sent off at 14:44 for another 4 on 4 play. Ramapage forward gave Hicketts a nasty cross-check from behind that was not called and Hicketts retaliated and got a very weak roughing call out of it at 17:12, but the Rampage pp had no answer at all.

3rd period: Rampage has not played a game since Friday night and it showed in this period as the Griffins took it to them throughout the period. Griffins took their first lead at 1:42 as Elson gave the puck to Campbell as he drove to the net and Husso made the save and the rebound went to Hronek and he made a nice shot that Husso stopped but the rebound went to Campbell who was by himself and put it in the empty cage to make it 5-4. Rampage had a chance to tie the game with a pp chance, but the Griffins killed it off. Griffins got a pp chance at 9:53 and at 10:44 Matt Lorito strikes again for his 2 pp goal of the game as he went top shelf over Husso to give the Griffins a 6-4 lead. Turgeon was in alone and the Rampage defender interfered with him and thus the ref awarded Turgeon with a penalty shot at 13:26, but Husso stayed with Turgeon and made a glove save. Hronek got a weak boarding call at 15:23 and the Griffins sealed the game with the Rampage net empty and down 6 on 4, Corey Elkins blocked a point shot and he quickly sent a slow glider down the middle of the ice and it barely got passed the goal line for a shorthanded/empty netter at 17:09 to make it 7-4. At 19:41, Ford forced a Rampage player by slamming him into his bench which caused a ruckus between the benches and thus got Elson's Gordie Howe hat trick as he got into a fight with Agozzino and Ford got the 2 minutes for cross-checking to end the game out. McCollum got the win in relief as he stopped 19 of 20 shots and played great to keep the Griffins in the game.

Great report.
Can't say I'm as interested in the Griffs these last two years as I used to be. But I still like reading about them.

From what I read in the news the other day, even though Bert made the opening night roster for the Wings, since he was immediately sidelined with an injury, the Wings will now wait until they have another injury before bringing Bertuzzi up from GR. This is because they supposedly like Wilson's grit on the 4th line. The Wings claim they lacked such grit with Sheahan.

Okay, but, if you could somehow harness the combined offensive power of Sheahan and Wilson, you could possibly use it to lightly toast a piece of bread, at most, but probably not before it started to mold. If you added in the offensive power of Booth and Witkowski, the same would still apply, no change at all.

Plus, isn't Tyler gritty? And three points already in GR! I'll bet that's better than Wilson, Witkowski and Booth could do...possibly combined. I want Bert in the NHL.

I mean, my thinking is that if a guy is gritty enough, then he should be able to find ways to get the puck into the net. That's MY kind of grit. I guess the wings aren't into it. Apparently, they just want a goonsquad.

Was there any actual reporting of him making the team? I know lots of people had high hopes for him, and were hoping he could fill a role for us...but I never heard anything of him making the team

I didn't read that it was planned for him to start with the Wings, until just the other day. There was a someone who asked about whether Bert would just join the Wings after returning from injury, and the answer was that even though the plan had been for Bert to start with the Wings, since his injury, now he would have to wait for the Wings to have another injury before getting another chance to play in the NHL. This is supposedly because of Wilson's grit. I can't find a link to it any more. Sorry.

EDIT: I did find the link (Red Wings mailbag: Tyler Bertuzzi, defense prospects and Jeff Blashill)

No problem. Just wanting to let fans know what is happening "down on the farm" as they say. Lots of fans wanting to know about several players that are here in GR right now. Hope they can string a few wins together. Need to get back healthy soon.

Tom McCollum stopped 35 of 38 shots for the Griffins.

Good to see Hicketts and Hronek on the scoresheet....
But again most of those names are guys with little shot at a future in Detroit.
Svech and Bert with goose eggs.
What are the lines like these days?

Hronek with a goal and 4 shots.
Is Puempel worth a look?
5-8-13 in 10 games.

After the early injury to Svech, my plan is to go easy in judging him this year, he was hoping to make the team, starts the Ahl season behind the 8 ball, it's going to take him a little to get rolling just like it did Mantha. I feel like people forget how young these kids are and how much they go up and down confidence wise. Let him develop a little and grow and get the confidence back, he is a skilled and good player, he will get there, but it won't be Tom, as is expected with later round picks. Especially after injury, confidence is a hell of a drug and Svech lacks it after missing his NHL "chance" and an injury.
