Green is already hurt, so just put him on IR and call Hronek.

Green on IR still leaves them with 6 healthy Dmen (or 7? If the league looks at Witkowksi as a dman?), so that wouldn't permit emergency recall.

There was this talk about "shutting down" Kronwall. Bertuzzi already went down as a paper move, so do those all (including Green on IR), and play one game with 17 skaters. Doesn't matter how Witkowski is counted, amount of skaters will matter. One short of 18 and you can do emergency call. Then call Hronek as an emergency. Give him 2 games, activate Green or whatever and call Bertuzzi back and go back to real roster.

Barring an injury to Howard and/or Coreau between now and the end of the season, the Wings have 2 recalls to use before the end of the season. Chances are that the Wings will wait as long as possible (most likely when the Wings are officially out of the playoffs) to use the 2 up. When they do use them, it will involve (in my opinion) the following players currently in GR:

Forwards (yrs in Det org): Tangradi (3), Lorito (2), Street (2), Puempel (1), Elson (1) (not likely), Nastasiuk (3 full /2 part) (not likely)

D-men: Renouf (2) (not likely)

The following Griffins players that I have listed above are all on their final year of their contracts. With Tatar's spot open for next season, and the potential of not resigning AA & Frk for next season, and other moves before the draft, the Wings might want to look at a couple of the forwards in GR from this list to determine if the Wings want to resign some of them for next season (and maybe beyond).

Guys like Svech, Turgeon, Holmstrom, Sadowy, Hronek, Russo, & McIlrath, will be back next season (either in Det or GR) in this organization with Russo & McIlrath would have to clear waivers to be sent back down.

Not sure where you're going with this, but Bertuzzi has already been recalled from his paper assignment.

They also don't need to play a game with 17 skaters to be able to utilize emergency recall. If they think someone is going to be out leaving them short of 2G 6D 12F or 18 skaters, they can use Emergency recall. As soon as whatever player thats questionable is healthy, the ER player has to go back down.

Also, sending Bertuzzi down and then back up again would burn one of their 2 remaining non emergency recalls.

We're already finding ways to manipulate BERTUZZI'S contract in order to "give the kids a look"?

Ugh.

Ugh.

How are they manipulating his contract to give kids a look?

All they did was make him eligible for the AHL playoffs by sending him down before the deadline and then calling him right back up afterward. It was all on paper, so Bertuzzi didn't have to do anything. This will allow the Wings to send Bertuzzi to Grand Rapids after the regular season ends to participate in the AHL playoffs. For all we know, since they've already told Bertuzzi to get a place in Detroit, they may have even asked if he wanted to go down for the playoffs before they even did the paper transactions...

Since they're down to two "non-emergency" call ups for the rest of the season there's literally a 0% chance Bertuzzi goes to Grand Rapids before the NHL season ends. Especially if the purpose is to call another young player up...

I know what the Red Wings actually did.

By "we're", I meant HFBoards users, who mentioned keeping him down in GR on paper for a couple games to make room for Hronek in Detroit

JARED COREAU NAMED AHL GOALTENDER OF THE MONTH
03/01/2018 11:00 AM
b62cbc2bf53bd2f7c98022920244928b.500.jpg
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The American Hockey League on Thursday announced that Grand Rapids Griffins goaltender Jared Coreau has been selected as the CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month for February.

Coreau allowed just nine goals against on 185 shots and finished unbeaten in six appearances during the month, compiling a 4-0-2 record, a 1.46 goals against average, a 0.951 save percentage and two shutouts before being recalled by the Detroit Red Wings on Feb. 20. He combined for 66 saves during back-to-back shutouts of the Western Conference-leading Manitoba Moose on Feb. 15 and 17 and was named the AHL’s Player of the Week on Feb. 19. The Griffins finished the month 9-1-0-2 – which ties for the second-most wins in February in franchise history – and have climbed into second place in the Central Division with 19 games remaining.

Coreau began the month with 31 saves in a 3-2 shootout loss at Cleveland on Feb. 1, but rebounded with 25 saves in defeating the Monsters in a rematch on Feb. 4. He stopped 25 shots in a 4-2 win over Manitoba on Feb. 7, and later earned back-to-back shutouts of the Moose in Winnipeg, making 28 saves in a 1-0 victory on Feb. 15 and 38 stops in a 5-0 win on Feb. 17. He has not allowed a goal in his last 126:47 of AHL action.

The 26-year-old Coreau is yet to make his NHL season debut. He ranks among the AHL’s leaders this season with 20 wins (4th), a 2.47 GAA (16th), a 0.916 save percentage (14th) and 2092:11 minutes in (4th) in 36 games.

The 6-foot-6, 215-pound netminder garners his second career monthly accolade (Dec. 2015), and this award marks the fifth time a Griffins goaltender has earned Goalie of the Month honors (Jimmy Howard, Dec. 2007 and March 2006; Simon Lajeunesse, Jan. 2002). Coreau picks up his fourth career award from the AHL overall, having also been named Player of the Week on Feb. 1, 2015.

A fifth-year pro from Perth, Ontario, Coreau started all 19 games of last spring’s Calder Cup championship run, showing a 15-4 record, a 2.84 GAA and a 0.909 save percentage. In 146 career AHL games with Grand Rapids, Coreau has an 84-48-10 record to go along with a 2.42 GAA and a 0.919 save percentage. He became the 158th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL when he debuted with the Red Wings on Dec. 3, 2016 at Pittsburgh. In his first taste of NHL action last season, Coreau posted a 5-4-3 mark, a 3.46 GAA, a 0.887 save percentage and two shutouts in 14 appearances.

In recognition of being named the CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month, Coreau will be presented with an etched crystal award.

DETROIT RECALLS SVECHNIKOV AND REASSIGNS SADOWY

03/08/2018 7:47 AM

[TBODY] [/TBODY]
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Thursday recalled forward Evgeny Svechnikov from the Grand Rapids Griffins and reassigned forward Dylan Sadowy to the Griffins from the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye.

In his second season as a professional, the 21-year-old Svechnikov has tallied 22 points (7-15—22) and 56 penalty minutes in 52 appearances with the Griffins.

During his rookie campaign in 2016-17, the 6-foot-3, 208-pound winger ranked third on the Griffins in scoring with 51 points (20-31—51) in 74 games while also placing among the American Hockey League’s first-year leaders in points (4th), goals (T7th), assists (9th). Svechnikov suited up in all 19 of the team’s playoff games and added 12 points (5-7—12), third-most among the league’s rookie players, helping the Griffins win the 2017 Calder Cup. Svechnikov made his AHL debut with the Griffins during the 2016 Calder Cup Playoffs and posted one assist in two games, joining the team after two years with Cape Breton of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Detroit’s first-round draft selection, 19th overall, in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Svechnikov made his debut with the Red Wings last April 3 versus Ottawa and scored the winning goal in the shootout. Becoming the 164th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL, Svechnikov logged two games with Detroit and totaled four shots while averaging 13:08 of ice time.

Prior to turning pro, Svechnikov played in 105 games for Cape Breton from 2014-16 and recorded 157 points (64-93—157) to go along with a plus-45 rating and 167 PIM. He notched 32 goals in both seasons and his 78 points in 2014-15 landed him a spot on the QMJHL All-Rookie Team.

A native of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia, Svechnikov played two seasons in Russia before coming to North America and he made his pro debut with Ak Bars Kazan of the Kontinental Hockey League, appearing in three games. He represented his country at the 2016 World Junior Championship and helped the Russians take home a silver medal.

Sadowy, a second-year pro, has totaled 28 points (11-17—28), a plus-seven rating and 20 PIM in 37 games with the conference-leading Walleye. His season-high nine-game point streak was snapped last Saturday.

A 6-foot-1, 210-pound winger, Sadowy has appeared in nine games with the Griffins this season and shows seven PIM.

As a rookie in 2016-17, Sadowy picked up six points (4-2—6) and 18 PIM in 38 regular season games with Grand Rapids and was a part of the team’s Calder Cup championship. He also appeared in six games with the Walleye last season, posting four points (1-3—4) and 14 PIM.

Prior to turning professional, the Brampton, Ontario, native played four seasons (2012-16) in the Ontario Hockey League, where he totaled 188 points (116-72—188), a plus-23 rating and 245 PIM in 258 regular season games. He posted back-to-back 40-goal seasons, scoring 42 with Saginaw in 2014-15 before banking 45 in 2015-16 between Saginaw and Barrie.

San Jose’s fifth choice, 81st overall, in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Sadowy was acquired by the Red Wings in May 2016.

Hicketts had a rough game as he was a -4 though not entirely he fault. Our top line (Puempel, Tangradi, & Street) doing all the scoring and no one else. PP got plenty of chances, but can not score on it lately. Elson got hit from behind and he was out the rest of the game. Caito (former Griffins d-man) tried to take out Sadowy on an open ice hit and he ended up crawling to his bench (stopped 2' short to where they had to stop play). Ferraro got lippy on the Wild bench and he was off most of the 2nd period and into the 3rd.

Iowa took over in the 3rd and the Griffins could not counter back. Great start (2 goals first 2:30 in the game) but got ugly after. Nelson said changes will be made for Friday's game (Saarijarvi most likely will be playing) vs Rockford. Saturday night's game vs Iowa could get nasty as the two teams will also play each other next week in Iowa.
