Wasn’t there also some year where Germany beat USA but got relegated
My Facebook memories tell me that this is the 10 year anniversary of the Czechs losing to Germany for the first time ever after beating Canada for the first time ever.

Head to head is first technically. But since they all beat each other it's differential.

Step 1: Taking into consideration the games between each of the tied teams, a sub-group is created applying the points awarded in the direct games amongst the tied teams from which the teams are then ranked accordingly.

Step 2: Should three or more teams still remain tied in points then the better goal difference in the direct games amongst the tied teams will be decisive.

Finland +3
Latvia 0
Germany -3

Yeah, that one TSN guy just kept embarassing himself and he must have mentioned that Germany should lose by 8 on purpose at least half a dozen times.

We have seen this many times over the years.. especially when it was only the top 3 going through. Germany would spring an upset (beat Pat Kane's USA 2-1) or Belarus over USA and then the team not only doesn't get to the quarters but gets relegated.

Germany had a chance to follow up a monumental win but got drug around the ice by Latvia. The Latvians should also be asking plenty of questions of themselves... they played scared, chicken shit hockey against the bigger nations. Maybe try to play against every team rather than just give up the puck without a means to get it back.

That is textbook Abols hockey. We play a very tight, boring, defensive game that is designed to lose by a respectful margin. If you get early penalties and concede a couple of early goals, all turns to shit and the players have no fighting chance, as they get yelled at on the bench if they try to do anything creative or slightly risky.

I mean, it has sort of worked before, but every set of players is different and you have to adapt and have the right approach to the players as well. Abols/Zirnis flunked the first games and even put the 2nd/3rd string goalies vs. Canada on purpose.

Must be hard for you to watch. That performance against the Finns accomplished the mission on the scoreboard I suppose but what dreadful hockey...

How did he come to that conclusion
I have no idea. If we had beaten Germany by +8, we would finish above Finland assuming they don't get points off of Sweden/Canada.

I guess he did not realize that Germany is a part of that 3-way-tie and would drop to the 5th place anyway.

Germany
Germany's expected starting goalie left the team right before the tournament due to illness.

Despite the cool and fortunate win over Finland to kick things off, relegation was likely decided the minute Wolf headed home before Game 1.

Latvia definitely showed up for its one pivotal match and Germany played its worst game when it mattered most.

Whatever happens against the US in the playoffs, the chief goal of this tourney has already been achieved for Latvia.

Meanwhile, the Germans are stuck with an all-or-nothing relegation fate against a Team Norway that has a nominally better goaltender and more potent top 6.

The two played a test game before the tournament and Norway won 5-4 in OT after blowing a 3-1 first period lead.

I guarantee you that Stensrud is not better than Bittner.

Norway does have a better top line (not top 6), Germany has more depth at every department. Unless Germany plays a very undisciplined game, Germany should win 7 out of 10 times.
