I am sure if they take a few more penalties, they can beat Norway. Terrible...

All the stick infractions were the least surprising. They have been skating around almost all tournament apparently not knowing what those sticks are for.

I really hope the group of 06s and 07s next year manages to get promoted again right away. But if they play like this team did when it mattered, then we might stay in division 1a for a while.

Can’t imagine we stay down for more than two years

This could be a good thing? Gives the DEB a wake up call? probably not though, I’m grasping at straws.

We probably lose the game vs Slovakia regardless but man, Niehus and his stupid play resulted in relegation...

Germany should do somethin with their junior program already because it's getting gotten out of hand.

Relegation in a tournament without Russia and Belarus should be a big time wake up call

They have a program. And it's one they've been pleased with.

Until now, I'd gander.

This is a big hit to the PowerPlay26 timeline.

I mean, this is year 7 or 8 of the program. As you say, dropping out of a group that is already without Russia and Belarus is definitely NOT part of the plan.

I believe the DEB will be given the option to host the D1A next spring. Which they'll probably accept, I'd assume. They have in the past.

So, that'll be nice for us locals.

Not sure if the DEB needed a wake-up call. I mean, "the PP26 program" has been up-n-running for a while and they prolly knew that the abilities of this year's group were a bit questionable, hoping they'd just somehow manage to retain the class (through the strength of the '05 blueliners?) and then say hello to a couple of more promising groups in the near future.

I'm not sure about the majority of next year's squad, but this of no benefit to the Grivas and Lewandowskis and Witthofts and Späths and Kaisers and Händels and Bleichers of the program. They won't be gaining anything by playing in the lower division. Then again, they could already be part of next year's squad with Pul, Schams, and Herzog.

Sure hope a goalie shows up.

The goalie thing will be interesting.

At the moment I see six candidates from the 06 group.
Marvin Berbner
Cole Danielsmeier
Erik Eder
Michail Elagin
Lennart Neiße
Linus Vieillard

Neiße would be my favourite at the moment, but there is still a long way to go.

It's been a few days now but I still can't believe Germany got relegated. Looking at the other teams, individual quality absolutely cannot be the issue, it's 100% coaching.

Look at Latvia's roster for example. Bulans and Mateiko are decent CHL players, I'd say they're at a similar level as Panocha and Bicker. Livics and Uljanskis also aren't bad but that's it. Valdis Dommers played 4 games for Latvia after scoring 6 points in 26 games with Schwenningen in the DNL. It's an awful team – an awful team that was able to beat Norway. Norway has some individual talent too, with Solberg, Granath, Vatne, Haugen, Moldal – but that's it. They're no better than Panocha, Bicker, Sumpf, Brandl etc. Yet, Germany didn't stand a chance against them.

It's honestly infuriating and people should be making a much bigger fuss about it. Sure, the 05s aren't great, but they aren't worse than Latvia or Norway.

Should there be a desirable candidate available, I think Dück will be replaced in the coming weeks/months.

I do think we'd hear more GMs and coaches from pro teams commenting on this relegation, much less the federation itself, if it were Finland or Czechia, etc. Heck, I remember it being seen as a bit of a national emergency in Slovakia when they went down before the pandemic. The soul searching around the country's hockey scene was pretty vocal.

Now, I won't comment too much on the individuals playing for Latvia and Norway, but Germany has traditionally had serious problems defeating Latvia at this level and as we saw, Norway was just downright better than Germany. In both games. Their coach is a rising star in that scene and will be taking over a pro outfit in Finland next year. Those kids looked VERY prepared for this task. Line for line, there seemed to be more rhyme and reason to what they were doing and what their job was.

I also get this feeling that the smaller countries that nonetheless love ice hockey seem to go about their business at these tournaments with more desperation, for a lack of a better word. There's a determination there that helps them overcome the possible lack of skill and depth. And it's something we don't always see from Germany (or an Austria) at these tournaments.

Unfortunately for Germany - and I'll be very open about this - both Czechia and Slovakia have seen a rise in their financial support the past decade and several programs, whether it be a club like Litvinov or a program like the one in Poprad, are churning out talents of international class successfully. Meanwhile, the Norways, Denmarks, and even Latvias of the world always have a handful of kids playing their junior hockey primarily in Sweden, but sometimes also Finland or North America. What's being done in the Mannheims, Colognes, and Berlins of the world as well as at the Red Bull Akademie just isn't churning out the same level of talents.

I watched those relegation games and thought Granath and Vatne were already playing in a manner superior to what any German forward was doing. I saw Solberg and Lafton and didn't think the German blueliners were playing at the same suffocating level.

I hope the DEB has been taking a lot of notes. I already thought Germany looked ripe for a relegation in Kaufbeuren and Landshut (there wasn't any) and it looked even worse this year.

If last summer's camp is any indication, then this bgroup uilds the vast majority of the roster they plan on taking to the WJC. A player from outside this group would have to have a monster fall to slide into consideration.

Some extremely exciting names on this list. It's a team that simply must get Germany back up in the A group next spring.

And yes, gotta hope Willhöft joins the fray ASAP.

Looking at their pictures, I could see JJ and Jack being related.
As for the other two, I have no idea. Brandl is not a rare name in German hockey and Mayer is not a rare name, period.

I agree. I won't expect too much at the Hlinka, because this roster is very young and a year of development makes a big difference, but by the time the U18 WJC comes around and considering the lower level of competition I would be very disappointed if they are not promoted, as long as we can ice anything close to our best roster.
The 06s are a bit weak on depths, but the top players are pretty good and the 07s are just very strong.

Really excited to see Neiße play. He could be next big goalie for us.

All that ANDDD... what are the chances you'd have a Clemens Sager and Clemens Seeger in the same group???

They've simply gotta be able to get this show back up where it belongs.

I guess I am a little less demanding. For me it is 9 or 10 (including all 4 of the 05s).

However, I guess if I put those 5 or 6 04s next to a group like the 07s or, looking back, the 02s Lutz might be the only one remaining.
But since both of the groups involved here are underwhelming the 04s are looking a little better to me than they actually are.

I see it like you.

And in taking this group as a preview heading into the season...

The goaltending trio looks obvious and logical at this point. Someone else will have to have a huge fall to break that triumphirate heading in, although possible. Kind of feels like Wolf will be the guy when the money is on the line, but we'll see.

Despite thoughts on Bettahar's underwhelming wherewithal (especially in the mobility department) and of course remembering quite well that Sinn was a one-man "How not to defend" video session at the last WJC, I am enamored with seeing Panocha and Tropmann here while rooting for Hübner (overrated?) and Nifosi (underrated?) to finally put their names on the map in a more concrete manner. Schindler didn't play a whole lot last year, but has a predominantly Czech background in his hockey upbringing while Weber was really quite strong for RB Juniors in the playoffs last spring.

Up front, it's time for Lutz to pop. It's time for him to be a 10-15-25 DELer and the guy who can make the most happen for this group. I'm not just saying this because he's a 2nd round pick. Nothing holds him back more than himself and it's time to get over that hump. I think Krening can be the leader in this group and Hauf will have to be too. They'll have to eat up trying minutes. And even if I don't see extremely promising international form in the following players, Team Germany has had worse than Oswald, Hördler, and Kechter as middle sixers. I thought Kechter looked a lot better as a 16-year-old than he has in recent years though.

In light of their DNL performances, it's time for Rollinger and Gaidel to part of this group, perhaps in a top 9 capacity. Elias should be a plus factor, but honestly, I'm really not holding my breath. Sivic seems like another Hördler type to me and has a good year of pro experience under his belt, which doesn't have to mean anything. Nieleck and Maksim are the 04 guys who I can see being replaced this fall, even if Nieleck's size isn't teachable and could be a big help if he's given the right role.

What has me excited are Bicker and primarily Sumpf. I not only see them being top 6 options by Christmas, but think the team can feature a surprising offensive kick through their presence. Germany traditionally lacks skill players and they have every opportunity to slot in as such when things kick off.

Without researching who's not here, one name that I'm a bit surpried about not seeing is that of Max Heim. He plays a heavy game and got in a full season of DEL2-DEL action last year. He was also recently at the LAK prospect camp. Would have seemed like a guy you want to get a look at here in the summer time, but maybe he has an injury or something.

Heim is a 03 isn't he, so he is no longer eligible unless I am very much mistaken.

Honestly the only 04s I could see potentially making a push for this team are Assavolyuk, Nicolas Schindler or maybe Junemann.
I have always liked Kauhanen, but the defense seems pretty set and he has not exactly forced anybody's hand.

I very much agree with you on the goalie situation. Wolf would be my front runner for the starting job with Dietl being the clear backup. And Bittner is really the only option amongst 04s behind those two.
Personally, I would like to see an 05 goalie as third stringer at the WJC. The obvious candidates would be Willerscheid, Pertuch or Ankirchner, although I would actually look at Keanu Salmik. If he continues his trajectory from last season he could become the top 05 goalie.
Willerscheid and Pertuch are still very inconsistent, Ankirchner seems to struggle behind a weak team, which is not a good trait if you are playing internationally for Germany (at least at the top junior level). Salmik had a very strong 4 game stint in the DEL2 for Freiburg and it will be interesting to see if he gets more games this year for Kaufbeuren.
