That’s not a big deal.

Agreed, 5th to a 4th is nothing. Who cares.

If you feel bad about this season, just remember, the Flames went all in for Hamonic, have barely any picks the next two seasons including no first or second, have the most overrated defence in the NHL, not much cap space to work with, and look like they’re going to miss the playoffs.

Misery loves company.

how can we really say Montoya is bad when we've only seen him 7 times? We have him signed for another season so we might as well see if we like him as our back up or if he will spend the next season the AHL. Finding that out now is worth the pick downgrade imo, since it will inform Chia's offseason priorities.

Did I read correctly that Aberg benched for missing practice? Not a good start to a new team

Haven't read this yet, link me the source material?

Throwing away 31 spots in the draft but sure, let's see more of Montoya... Maybe Todds going for the ultimate troll job and gonna pull Montoya 28 minutes into the game.

Lets go McDavid points!

It would cool if this could be a huge scoring game. Even if McDavid and Kucherov both had like 5 points each that would be awesome

Montoya might be the better choice, Talbot had a massive brain fart last game on the first goal lol and the 2nd was a really weak angle, should've had that.

Talbot had a brain fart sure. But he's been solid of late. Somebody mentioned his save percentage is something like 95% over the past 2 weeks.

Montoya at this point is never going to be a better option. Lol.

Yup Talbot playing where he should be lately and Montoya playing at Talbots level for the season, which I guess for a backup is where it should be.

They also didn't lottery protect their first round pick this year so if Flames win the lottery, Garth is giddy like a school girl. Their GM should be ripped for that alone.

A 4th instead of a 5th isn't a big deal but why trade a 5th for a 4th if they don't have to, makes no sense. If they want to give Talbot a rest, call a goalie up from Bakersfield on an emergency basis.

It definitely can be worse as you said. The Flames seem to be in NHL purgatory, not good enough to compete for anything meaningful, not bad enough to get an elite prospect and no picks to replenish the farm system although they do have several very good prospects. The Isles winning the draft lottery with the Flames pick would almost make me forget about the Oilers failed season.

So dumb. Winnipeg even lottery protected the 1st they dealt for Statsny at the deadline with basically zero chance of missing the playoffs.

Just because a 5th to a 4th likely won't matter in the long run, doesn't mean you should give away picks for no reason. Following that logic, why don't we just trade all of our picks after the first down a round since it doesn't matter? There's no reason not to have called up one of the AHL goalies to avoid losing that pick in a season that doesn't mean anything.

He's played 166 games over nine seasons with seven different teams and has a career .908 SV%. We know what he is: a not very good back up goalie.

They’re not giving away a pick at all, the pick is already traded.

Realistically a 4th through a 7th have about the same probability of success at the NHL level.

Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, Slepyshev, Aberg, Caggiula, Rattie

These are the types of players that have to pan out / contribute for us to succeed and take some strain off McD, Drai, Nuge. Hope 3/6 to 4/6 of them can show something in the next 10 games and training camp next year.

Not trying to derail the thread but Chia saw what we got with LB all last season and still ran with him as backup to start.

His definition of 'priorities' doesnt always make sense

You don't think it's pointless to give away a 4th for a 5th for no reason? What's the point? It's not necessarily about the value of the picks, it's the principle of mismanaging an asset no matter how minor.
