Avs are the perfect team for Hall. Great young team with lots of cap space.
A shortened season also probably works in Hall's favour given that he's injured so much in normal years. With a shortened season he might just feel that it's worth it to sign a 1 year deal if it means that he can play on a top contender for basically the first time in his career. If he puts up PPG next to Mackinnon and then has a great playoffs his next contract could be enormous.

If I was one of the big UFA's I'd only sign a 1 year deal.
But the cap is staying the same next year. And only raising by a million the year after that. What benefit is a 1 year deal when teams will be in even deeper cap trouble a year from now? Hall in particular will be 30 next year. It’s not like he’s going to have a great season and increase his value. He’s likely already proven enough. He’s better off taking that long term security even though unfortunately he will have to take a huge pay cut.

Teams will be better prepared for a flat cap next off season. There will be a bit more money to go around with more expiring contracts, retirements etc.

Expectation was still a full slate of games but compressed schedule.

No way you can do a full 82 game schedule
Season would end in early July, playoffs and cup don’t end till labor day if not later.

A season going to mid April over 15 weeks could fo 50 or so games.

Being optimistic of having as much of a full season as possible, they could just have a 1-month free agency period, with training camps built in. If you are a Free Agent and want to spend weeks dragging out a contract, so be it, miss some time. That could lead to a December start of the season, (2 months behind schedule). No bi-weeks, and start the playoffs 1.5 months later than normal, and also have a shorter 2021 offseason.

They'd be back on track after that. Admittedly, that's probably a little too optimistic.

1 month isnt enough of an offseason lol

Idiots.

Wouldn’t it have been better to just cancel it as it was and prepare for a New season starting as usual?

Gotta be Better to ruin one season rather than two.
And the Covid would likely be less intense in september/october than now?

Possibly even the audience could have attended.

I figured something like this was going to happen whether playoffs were to happen or not, hopefully by January or so the situation in the USA is more stable and we have a vaccine or better treatment options. If that is the case, then next season they will start late, probably end a bit late, and will aim to put fans back in the stands.

Most teams have played about 40 games by January, hence if you eliminate the bye week and take the regular season into the third week of April you should be able to fit in a 52 game regular season with a full playoff. This shouldn't upset the offseason activities enough that the following season shouldn't be able to relatively on time, it is the best of a bad situation.

I understand this cba deal has a flat cap in it. Reading between the lines of things said on the subject of next years, I am going to guess that the season starts Jan 1 with a Winter Classic game. They will play a complete schedule with the playoffs running through the summer.

On paper the NHL playoffs tv competition in the summer is just regular season MLB. As opposed to the NCAA basketball tournament, NBA playoffs and MLB regular season. Done that way the open of the season avoids MLB post season, NCAA football, and NFL.

They get a free try at it if they can play to see how it is received.

No. It gets missed a lot but the NHL is a gate league. They need to sell tickets to make money. The tv money isn't enough. There is NO WAY that they are playing games with fans in the stands next fall. Both the NFL and the NCAA's football program is in jeopardy of not happening at all.

Starting the season on January 1 2021 gives them extra time to get healthy enough to sell tickets to their games. It allows them to plan for something they have a better chance of delivering. Playing games the first week of October would be unlikely at best right now if playing with fans was required.

There’s no way there are fans in the building before 2021 and even that is a stretch and likely then it’s going to be a severely reduced capacity.

They need to pull in every dollar they can and avoid penalties related to tv and sponsorship deals they will incur if the the season is scrapped. Their best course of action is to generate as much revenue as possible this year, avoid penalties and start the season january 2021 when hopefully they can have at least some fans in the building.

If they don’t finish this year and don’t get people in the building next year the leagues financial situation will be dire and it’s possible some owners could just walk away. Already there are several teams who operate at near break even or at a loss, who get by with revenue sharing. No revenue is a big problem for teams and players alike. That’s why they are so desperate to get this year done and are working on an unprecedented cba/rtp deal in an almost unheard of amount of time.

Interesting. So probably looking at a Late December/Early January start to the 2021 season. If they remove the bye weeks and the All-Star game like it sounds like and run busy weeks for everyone they should be able to play ~14 games a month so something like 60ish games through late April or early May. Something tells me the NHL will want a similar play in round for next season as well with the condensed schedule so maybe they drop a few games at the end to make room for that.

My guess is we'll see this:

- 56 Game schedule.
- No inter-conference play
- In the West just a simple play everyone 4 times.
- In the East you play everyone 4 times except each team will play one team only 3 times.

Then we see the same thing we are seeing now for the playoffs. Top 4 teams in each conference get byes straight to the playoffs while seeds 5-12 have a best of 5 play in for the first round.

Next season would have to be a shortened 50 g schedule hopefully starting after Xmas.

Why? They could just push the playoffs into the summer. I don't think the players or owners have much interest in a shortened schedule that will impact the HRR.

Pierre LeBrun tweeted that as of right now the NHL is focused on playing 82 games in the 2020-21 season, so they would have the Stanley Cup Final next summer.

Agree the season starts late December

Standard 6 month season takes it to late June
Playoffs to late August.

Remrmber next year they want to launch a new team with expansion draft et all.
