Move Stajan to Vegas for McNabb! Lazar is actually a centre too, so depth isn't a problem.

Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Frolik-Backlund-Lazar
Tkachuk-Bennett-Foo
Versteeg-Jankowski-Brouwer

Brodie-Hamonic

Gaudreau - Monahan - XXX(Marleau/Sharp etc?)
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Ferland - Bennett - Versteeg
Lazar - Stajan - Brouwer

Jankowski in when there's room(whether a trade or someone bought out/waived)
Foo first call up.

pretty much what I want to see, given Versteeg is pretty flexible on the wing I'd move him to 4th line LW if Lazar can find some chemistry on the 3rd line.

Gaudreau - Monahan - XXX(Marleau/Sharp etc?)
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Ferland - Bennett - Lazar
Versteeg - Stajan - Brouwer

I thought about it, I guess it depends on Brouwer being a black hole for offense or not this year....Versteeg is one guy who can get people going. Plus he's good at slowing down the play so Brouwer can park his rear in front of the goalie and get some garbage goals...again something he's supposed to be good at.

If Brouwer can rebound this year, our lineup is looking plenty dangerous. If you add a Marleau type to the top line, our 4 lines can roll and you have a great distribution of talent.

I find Ferland and Lazar pretty interchangeable, I think you really need a guy like Versteeg on there to make it produce. That being said, Ferland-Stajan-Lazar could cause a lot of havoc on a 4th line checking unit.

hahaha, I know, it'd drive teams crazy, which was kind of what I envisioned:

Ferland-Bennett-Lazar being like. Honestly, with how ****** Brouwer was this past year, I find he just constantly screws my armchair lineups. If he can get his game back, you'd think he'd really help out a kid like Bennett. With that in mind: Versteeg-Bennett-Brouwer would be a great line.

Personally, I still think we'll see Tkachuk-Bennett. Watching Foo's highlight reel and style, it seems like might fit a Tkachuk-Bennett line, like a glove, down the road. Overall, our best combinations, style wise, in the future might just be....

Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Frolik-Backlund-Lazar
Tkachuk-Bennett-Foo
Versteeg/Klimchuk-Jankowski-Brouwer

He was a beast in the playoffs for us, one of the few who stepped up (others being Monahan, Bennett and Chaisson).

Though I would have liked to see him gone solely because our PP was trash last year and was hoping by virtue of Versteeg and Brouwer being gone they'd have to change it up. Since both are back I think our coaches (aka the maroon who runs the PP) is an idiot and refuses to change it.

If he can play like he did in the playoffs again next year it's a huge win for the Flames. Even if he is subpar in the regular season, as long as he plays like a beast in the playoffs it'd be worth it.

Na.

4 characters long

Yeah why on earth would someone want the bigger, younger, cheaper (probably), guy who is better defensively, a better PKer and who scored a similar amount of ES points. It's blasphemy!

I would love someone like that. Sadly, the Flames don't have anyone who matches that description.

Chiasson does fit that description compared to Versteeg though, which is why I would have rather had him back over Versteeg.

A one dimensional player, who was 5th in Flames scoring last year, cheap or Chiasson, when we already acquired Lazar, who covers the full list....sure it wasn't a hard choice.

We have Lazar to pick up some slack there. We need secondary scoring and PP expertise over someone who's marginally better defensively.

If they want Chiasson, they'll sign him.

But, let's also pretend like your personal bias against Versteeg has nothing to do with this

My personal bias makes all of what I said true? Damn, I'm like a ****ing wizard.

My personal bias does not make Versteeg a soft defensive liability, nor does it make him oft injured or a very mediocre producer at ES.

Also saying Chiasson is marginally better defensively, is like saying Einstein is marginally more intelligent than Forrest Gump

I wasn't very keen on Chiasson at the start of the season but as we progressed, he won me over. He's who I wanted Colborne to be. Shame we can't really fit him into the team, but he's also not irreplaceable

Between Steeger and Chiasson... Easy money is on Versteeg.
One guy made the PP tick and got it to a top 10 one in the league; the other guy couldn't fit in on the top lines until he was demoted and played well on the bottom lines.

One guy can go .5ppg; the other has a hard time cracking 25 points with a lot of time with Johnny.

Edit; I should say I really liked Chiasson on this team.

Chiasson and Versteeg are roughly equivalent defensively, let's not get ridiculous here. The difference is that Chiasson was a hell of a lot better defensively than offensively, to the point where he was sort of a bottom-six defensive specialist.

Versteeg is roughly the same quality at both, regardless of the narrative people want to push, but the fact that defense isn't the far and away best part of his game makes people assume Versteeg is worse at playing defense.

Overall Versteeg is undoubtedly the better player, this signing makes us way better than re-signing Chiasson would.

2022 Cup to Calgary
Chiasson was a good fourth liner for us and a great penalty killer. I'd love to dump Brouwer and replace him with Chioffside. But having a guy like him in your top 9 is ultimately gonna be your biggest hole. So many better options available.. Jankowski, Klimchuk, Mangiapane, Poirier, Foo? and of course UFAs like Weal, Sharp, Jagr, Marleau and Williams if they actually were to sign with the Calgary Flames.
