God, I remember this guy from back in his Devils days... which is weird BECAUSE HE BARELY f***ING PLAYED FOR THEM, AND THE CANES WERE STILL IN HARTFORD

and somehow I totally forgot he had a tryout here. We've had some interesting tryouts over the years. Trying to remember but wasn't Jeff Norton a tryout one year?

Geez and I thought I was the king of obscure knowledge. I do kinda remember Jeff O'Neill getting a PTO in 2007? Also I remember reading one time that Chad Larose beat out David Clarkson for the last spot in 2005.

But, yeah I've never heard of Wolley or Hulse.

Clarkson was at the traverse city tournament for us back in the day and didn’t get a contract. Krug was another participant, as well.

Clarkson was way before we joined Traverse. Check out roster for the tourney we were in that year. Love seeing some of those names again.

HURRICANES PROSPECTS TO PLAY IN ROOKIE TOURNAMENT

Much smaller roster for Krug's year, but a couple of interesting names.

Ah, before he retired and made his fortune in AV. Rumor is he appreciated the gesture from the Canes and considered becoming part owner.

Love seeing these videos. This one in particular, you really get a sense of how weird the whole Gaudreau/CBJ situation was behind the scenes. It really did happen without any preparation, to the point that Gaudreau was introduced to the head coach after signing the contract and flying to Columbus for the presser. The CBJ front office had basically the same "wait what, is this real?" reaction as the fans.

This is awesome and also lends credence to the speculation that the Gudbranson contract was bigger than just landing the player. Sounds like if they hadn’t given out that albatross of a contract Gaudreau may not have been a Blue Jacket.

JG going to Columbus should tell us 2 things:
1. the league still doesnt value undersized wingers
2. limiting yourself to 1/4th of the U.S limits your possibilities for teams and knowing 2/3rds of those teams had cap concerns, the possibilities got even smaller.

Im sure they are surprised but they were the only true players in the market because of the top two reasons. Columbus is an oddly constructed that team that could be first season Vegas level or be a non playoff team cuz their defense, center, and goalie game is very suspect.

paying 4 x 4 for Grub is dumb no matter how you slice it.

Puck Soup had the best take on this. Anytime the guys on podcasts like 32 Thoughts or whatever are talking about a contract and the first thing out of their mouths when talking about the contract is "good for Player X, you know?", you're just like "uh oh, that's not good."

The crazy thing is, it doesn't seem they realized they were even in the conversation.

I would love to know how this really played out on the Gaudreau side of the fence. It really seems like a decision that was made with zero planning, just a random phone call out of the blue.

Watching this interests me on another aspect as I was watching them tour the rink.

In high school, basketball/football/whatever recruits go on countless visits to colleges to tour facilities, meet staff, etc. I never hear about that happening on the pro level. I guess that could be due to the pro players already going for a trial run any time they play a game in a different city. Not to mention, college recruits also are spending their lives on campus so that also plays a part. Regardless, it just hit me that I never hear about players going on tours at the pro level in any sport. Anyway, just an idle thought I was having

Kinda supports the speculation JG was expecting Philly to move heaven and earth and James van Reimsdyk's contract to secure him, and was left realing when they didn't wheel and deal to sign star winger local boy coming home.

I wonder why JG rejected New Jersey (as should we all).

He had a piece in the Athletic about it and it made it out that Columbus was the only real player in it. Philly never got into the conversation. Islanders couldn’t clear space. NJs offer was in the 9s but never heard back from JG’s agent because they focused on the best 1st offer they got.

NJ sucks, it’s a horrible place to visit and live?

If he was a Flyers fan as a kid, then he grew up during the peak time of the Flyers-Devils rivalry, and as such has such a hate for that org that he'd be willing to toy with them to prevent them from making other moves in order to save cap for him before he inevitably went elsewhere.

NJ is one of the best places in the country to be a multimillionaire. Direct access to all the benefits of NYC, except you go home to some charming little village in the countryside.

Yes the taxes are high, but there's a reason for that. Small-town NJ is almost European in quality of life.

Well first of all, it's in New Jersey, and not a nice part of NJ...so yea you don't need much more reason...

I think a big reason for that is most of the time FA have been in every league city and either know a good portion if the team and staff or at a minimum know someone who knows them. The in person visits are not as necessary in the bigs
