As someone who played hockey for 30 some odd years up to the low (really low) minor league level, I can tell you that captaincy/assistant captaincy really means very little in the locker-room. Most times it's just a seniority thing, or in the case of minor hockey it goes to one of the few individuals who's actually intelligent enough to talk to a referee. (this is rarer than you might think)
At the NHL level it seems to mean more to fans and sportswriters than it does the actual players. Leaders are leaders regardless of whether they have extra letters on the front of their jersey or not.
