Do players check their phones between periods?

Of course. Guys used to smoke between periods.
Smoke between periods? We have a family friend who was the Jets 1.0 team doctor and he said it was all they could do to keep some of the Russian players from smoking on the bench!

Generally, no. Does a player ever sneak a peek, perhaps if there’s a special occasion or something, sure. But that’s really not the time or place to be casually checking phones or texting unless there’s something going on.

Tangentially related, I’ve always wondered if when a player goes to the locker room out of the blue and there is speculation of an injury, but they are back in a few minutes, if they just had to go to the bathroom

Any serious hockey team will not have phones from the time they check in until they are getting ready to leave the arena. Teams in any league that don't look like a serious team, likely check phones and much more.

Yes, they come on HFBoards to hear what the pros on here think they should change.

:biglaugh:But seriously, I doubt it. I would have a zero cell phone policy in the locker room if I were a coach. Don't need outside distractions when I'm trying to coach. As a player I wouldn't want to look at my phone. It's unprofessional, when I'm supposed to be listening to my coach, talking to my teammates, refueling myself and taking care of anything else to get ready for the next period

I have a weird feeling Pinto does…

I would have to guess by team culture, I would think Boston, Philly, Tampa and teams like that don’t and teams like Jersey, Leafs, etc do.

No reason behind it, and not sure it particularly matters. What you do away from the rink and the minutes on the bench/ice matter much more than the 20 minutes twice between games.

You can say the guy that isn’t on his phone cares more, but I’m sure there’s a guy who isn’t that eats like shit, drinks etc.

That does happen, famously during the 2007 playoffs when Luongo missed the first part of overtime against the Ducks, only to return a little over 3 minutes into OT, and then gave up the series winner about a minute after.

In every sport. Lamar Jackson ran off the field late in a Monday or Thursday night game against the Browns and the broadcast was going nuts thinking he was injured. He came back out after a few minutes and played the rest of the game.

We all know it's the FB and IG they are checking when looking at the Ipad on the bench :laugh:

Funnily if that also what the refs are looking through during "reviews"

Probably depends on the coach/player. I'd imagine the Isles aren't allowed to due to Lou but I'd guess there are other teams that don't see any issue with it as long as they don't ignore their coach or something.

This legit happened to Roberto Luongo while he was with the Canucks. Game 5 of a 2007 round 2 playoff series against Anaheim. And, if I remember correctly, it was in OT. He came back and promptly went on to let in Anaheim's series winning goal

A friend of mine had a cup of coffee in the ECHL and said phones were not allowed out on gameday.
