I mentioned that a few nights ago. It's actually terrifying. This team could actually only win maybe 2 or 3 games in the month of December. Wish I could say I was joking but I'm not.

If we get the Cory from October or at least the usual Cory, Hall comes back and stays, Auvitu stays in the lineup and we have no injuries, I think we can win more than that.

If we're still staying status quo with Josefson on the ''3rd line'' (only to play 6-10 minutes in some of them anyway) and Bennett is out and we're playing some of these guys in his spot anyway, Auvitu is injured, etc, we might not win a lot of games. But I think we'll win more than 2 or 3 just with Hall alone and with Cory progressing to the mean of his usual play.

Cory is still a top 3 goaltender, top 5 at worst. Start of this season (month of November particularly) be damned. I'm sure the main board is already talking about it, while they still believe guys like Ward and Howard have turned the corner and have been reborn, or that Rinne has never not been a top 5-10 goaltender.

He still has a league average save percentage, he just looks more like Halak or some average JAG than the usual Cory. He's playing more like Halak or Ryan Miller, Dubnyk when he's not having some insanely good year (like this year). Any of the dead average starters you can think of.

It's a weird year for goalies though. A lot of terrible goalies of the past few years are having these ''Renaissance'' seasons, although I don't actually personally believe they're rejuvenated, since it's only November 29th. Jimmy Howard and Cam Ward are having better starts than any of their past 3 or 4, maybe even 5 seasons. Pekka Rinne has been trash for 3 of the last 4 years before this season, yet he's got a save percentage of .935 on the season.

Even Lundqvist has been having an average season so far.

Psh ya well with the offense those ****** lords are putting up across the river Hank can play games facing his own posts and still win. Must be nice. I wonder what that feels like to sign crap like Grabner, Perri and sign dudes like Vessy who are all contributing. I hope this isn't another year where I'm like ok if the Devils are going to suck at least beat the rangers in the season series, nice constellation prize :::eye roll

I think they got insanely lucky with that Grabner signing. Dude produced at a similar clip to Jacob Josefson last season. I don't even think they imagined him scoring all these goals, despite the fact that he scored 34 goals once very long ago. I thought he would be waiver fodder if he had a so-so camp/preseason or started the regular season slow. Then I noticed that he actually got a 2 year contract and not just a one year contract. I don't like blaming luck for the most part, but Grabner's goal scoring has been insanely lucky. I'm not saying he's as bad as Josefson at offense, but he's no 40 goal scorer or whatever he's on pace for.

Not to add to the depression in this thread, but December has been Cory's worst month statistically in his career. Hopefully he's just getting it out of his system at the end of November here. On the positive, from January onwards he's ridiculously consistent.

Some of those solos are not as difficult as some casual listeners/non guitar players might think. But I suppose that's all relative.

Spoken like an actual guitar player;)

I'm not that gifted when it comes to playing guitar, I was able to play Jingle Bells (I think most guitar players start with songs like that, Jingle Bells is like the easiest thing to play) but I always thought Stairway to heaven's was very hard. Or at least seemed to be. Some of the other one's seem like they'd be more easier for novice's or amateur's though.

A lot of Boston's solo's and riff's sound the same, or at least Peace of mind is very similar to Don't look back.

I feel like a lot of U2's stuff has the same chords and solo's. I remember Henry Rollins critiquing U2 and saying The Edge had the same two or three riffs.

I think he'll get better in December. Even with how terrible he was for this month, he still has a .914 save percentage on the season. That's not that good for a starting goaltender, but it's not that terrible for the first few months.

Marty had a miserable October-December in 2005. His save percentage didn't even hit .90% until after New Years of 2006, outside of the first 3 or 4 games of that season.

.901 was the average save percentage that season in the league, as it was the inflated stats season where there were a trillion penalty calls and many power play goals being scored. I'm not even gonna count Marty's twilight years of 2010-2014. He didn't even reach 90% on the season until March and February of those 2 seasons. Outside of the first month of the season. Marty was consistently slow in October and sometimes November, even for many years from 93-09. Lundqvist and Luongo are also notorious for slow starts throughout their career. Luongo especially.

A couple more random Cory things since I'm looking at his career splits page. He has a .920 or better save percentage against 20 teams and a sub .900 save percentage against just one team, Detroit.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled freak out session...

And for what it's worth, these were Cory's numbers after 18 games played in 14-15.

Cory Schneider Cumlative Season Statistics through November 15, 2014

GP DEC GA SA SV SV% SO PIM TOI
18 8-7-2 46 509 463 .910 1 0 1020:07

His save percentage is still 4 points higher this year after 18 games than it was that year after 18 games.

The biggest difference is that Cory had started every game of the season up to that point in 14-15.

He started the first 20 games of the season in 14-15, before Clemmensen started that awful game in Calgary in game #21, where we blew a 2 goal lead in the final 2 minutes and lost to RamBLOW in the shootout.

Your avatar is making me miss TG. That cranky **** at least knew what was going on.

That is so true.

...btw, I hate the Jets. I hate the Football Jets that always lose and always make me pull my hair out. And I hate the Hockey Winni-PUKE Jets that don't do me a favor and LOSE to us. Bah humbug.

So I'm assuming Merrill has less than 3 NHL games left in his Devils career. I'm hoping for 0. I really only have a problem with two players on this team. Him and Josefson, whos butt hits the ice about 12 times a game.

You really do have to be good at moving through the neutral zone with speed and Hall is excellent at that. Losing him is a pretty big loss in the transition game.

If you look at what Pittsbugh did last year in the playoffs it was all about the defense getting the puck out quickly to their forwards who used their speed to attack. They didn't spend a lot of time actually defending. Obviously having an elite defenseman in Letang helped as well.

The Penguins won the cup with a defense of Letang, Dumoulin, Lovejoy, J. Schultz, Cole, Maatta, and Pouliot, which is absolutely ridiculous.

I'd love to see an upgrade on defense, but having Hall pushes everything back, especially when they double shift Hall and have him out there so often 5-on-5. Even when he's not out there, teams being to play a different way when Hall is out there and it carries over to the next shift. It's not like a team will turn a switch and start swarming the Devils when Hall's not on the ice.

That in itself is HUGE for this team especially when the defense is so weak. It'll give the defense time AND the forwards room to work.

Yeah same here, Gross has been pretty good but he isn't on top of things like TG was. Still getting a feel for him, nothing beats a salty TG.

There's two guys that Andrew Gross reminds me of when looking at his picture in your avatar.

A much younger Rob Reiner, with actual real hair.

And almost like Keith Jones with facial hair. The Keith Jones of CSN Philly Flyers broadcasts/NBC intermission/post game guy.

I've always thought he looked like a non-clean shaven Keith Jones, never really saw Rob Reiner in him until just now though.

He does look like Rob Reiner when he's smiling though, holy ****.

All In The Family is one of my favorite shows ever, I have the entire series on DVD but haven't watched them in a while. Weirdly enough, one real long term ex girlfriend from years ago bought me the entire series on VHS. This was before most people had a DVD player back in the early 00's. Then a more recent ex girlfriend bought me the entire series on DVD for Christmas. She had no idea that the other girlfriend had bought me it on VHS about 10 years earlier. But she knew I had them on VHS but just no longer had a VHS player to watch them on.

I remember thinking Sally Struthers was really cute on the show, I still think she was cute back then. Then I saw her on one of those infomercials she did back in the late 80's/early 90's and my mom told me ''Look! It's your girlfriend Gloria!'' and I didn't even recognize her.

And Merrill did tip that puck on the game winner, according to Cory.

Why not just let him handle it? He might have stopped it if not for that stick.:shakehead

You could say that about almost every shot that goes in off a defender trying to block or deflect a shot though.

Also, thank you Steve for mentioning that the PP had scored a goal in 3 straight games. It was 0-4 tonight.

Did he mention Laine's goal drought too? Steve is ****ing the worst.

I understand it when blocking shots on a PP or when the team is cycling and forechecking the hell out of you. I thought that one was unnecessary though.

My favorite Steve moment was when he called Fiddler scoring the goal that Lappin scored. :shakehead

It was up there with Cammalleri's phantom save from the other night against Toronto.

You knew he was gonna. He talked about Matthews drought until he got his first goal of that game. Then another one.

I don't have as many complaints with our crew as many of our fans do, but I wish he would be a little more pleasant before his annual out of town scoreboard updates start in a couple months from now.

Zajac played almost 25min and didn't do **** offensively (and was terrible possession-wise too)... worst center depth in the league.

There's no way Auvitu was a HS. The Frenchman is our 2rd best D in the season along Severson.

We're still in the last wild card spot with our best player coming back in the next two games possibly. I think the consensus was to just tread water until hall gets back and we're in the same position when he went down. All aboard the optimism train!!
