The deals that you're speaking of are rare, practical non existent, especially in the flat cap world. Even rebuilding teams aren't in the market for 3-4 years of the Eriksson, Lucic, Neal or the Okposo's of the world....even for a 1st. Furthermore teams are saving their 1st for currency in the expansion draft, to buy protection for the players they want to hold on to.
Teams look for useful players, like Ryan, to hold back younger players, forcing them to develop before being gifted minutes. Expiring contracts, for useful players, on reasonable contracts are always movable. Obviously you misunderstood, possibly arent familiar with the player or just don't get it because we're not talking about the same class of player.
