Just like Big Z he has something left in the tank but I doubt he can fill his old role. I'd love to trade for a top pairing D man and try and win it all this year Seids and Z will become better if we can add someone good to take the pressure off them.

Not a believer that this team is merely a top pairing D-man away from winning nor am I interested in trading assets that this team actually appears to finally have to get one.

If this team was one in the conversation for a Cup who Mngt. felt would could be the favorites by acquiring said D man, then sure, go for it. I like what Sweeney`s done so far, stay the course, there will be speed bumps but that`s what happens during a retool

Bruins now 5-2-0 with Seidenberg who is playing very well

3 points and a +5

Since he has returned to the lineup the teams GA per game is 2.14

What's up with Seids? Scratched last two games. I figured they gave him a maintnence day against Vancouver, but what about last night?

I've been pleasently surprised with his play this season, and I'd definitely much rather see him in there over K Miller and Trotman.

I think he has been generally solid top 4 as well. Not going to worry about whether he is seriously injured or not until there is reason to. They could just as likely be just wanting to make sure they showcase everyone and giving him and Colin some extra rest is a side benefit.

Seidenberg's lack of footspeed is a major issue. Twice in the St. Louis game they got in alone while it looks like he is chasing after them with dull skates. We have an elite skater in Morrow that is riding the pressbox in the new NHL --a skaters game --meanwhile the old German machine has broken down a few times over the past few years and now looks like it is operating with broken parts. He was never the fleetest of foot so losing a step is devastating for his game. Julien will not play Morrow over (a healthy) Seidenberg so we are left with

Krug (fast, multi-directional skater)
C. Miller (fast, multi-directional skater)
...
...
K. Miller (average)
McQuaid (average)
...
Chara (slower, overall, good once he gets going)
....
....
....
Seidenberg (slow, well below average in new NHL)

Still years left on the contract --we need to get out from the contract this year taking advantage of a team looking for a steady vet.

This is not to bash Seidenberg as he has many qualities but I'm not sure a team that has Chara can have another minute-munching guy that is below average at skating.

Thoughts?

I just mentioned this in one of my more recent posts that Seids would have to be the D man to trade and search for a Top pairing D man that can play solid D and log good time too with much quicker speed than Seids.
I know it will not be easy but we just cannot have both Chara and Seids if we make the playoffs because they would net be able to carry the necessary load that it takes to play in playoffs.
I guess we will have to wait and see if management will have the same opinion and attempt to go for it if the teams performance continues to do well through the year.

Wow just checked his offensive zone starts. 54.7% makes him the most sheltered outside of Krug on D (among the full time guys). that's crazy. He used to be the guy you did everything you could to start in your own end.

I suspect that also has to do with Morrow and Colin

Seids is still a workhorse, but it's doubtful he produces at all offensively for the rest of his career.

He belongs on the third pairing with a good skating D...i.e. a Miller. You've got to grab another top 4, preferably top 2 defensive D to "make that work".

Chara - xxx

Krug - McQuaid

C. Miller - Seidenberg

Unfortunately, I don't think we'll ever see that lineup. Even if we did acquire a #2, I don't trust Julien to ever remove K. Miller from the lineup for more than a game.

K. Miller will be removed from the lineup when Sweeney doesn't resign him

He's now a PK specialist. Too slow for 5 on 5.

4M is very expensive for a PK specialist that you have to shelter 5 on 5...

If I was Sweeney, I would look to get a higher Cap hit player with only 1 more year on his deal for Seids and his 2 remaining years. That would also open a spot for one of our faster D prospect.

If Yzerman has interest, maybe he is not as untradeable as many imagine; while we might not know the details (retained cash, sending prospect with, etc,) it show he can be moved which would give the Bs some flexibility.

except they probably wanted to send carle and his 5M cap hit back the other way.

i think seids can be moved in the offseason for sure. he can still help some young dmen along, help teams get to the cap floor and be a great 3rd pairnign guy. carolina could take him to help their PK and guide Hanifin and Faulk with some aspects of their game. I just use them as an example. I'm sure there's others who may take him on for the last year or two of his contract. DS just needs to pull the trigger in the offseason. which he's shown he's not scared to do. it'll free up a spot for a new signing or younger kid to step in.

trade him with trotman and koko!

Fwiw, that bad giveaway vs Washington aside, DS44 has been very good since the trade deadline. Looks more agile, has been really laying the body - making guys pay, and his puck moving has been better. Maybe it's just me but the last week or 2 he's looked more like the old Seids.

What's the consensus on Seidenberg? Does he get moved? Did he in fact play better towards the end of the season? Is he finally healthy and ready to once again be a shutdown top-4 dman? Or should Sweeney move him for say a Wideman who only has 1yr left on his deal?

Seidenberg's struggles IMO have played a huge factor in the demise of the Bruins blue line. Had he been healthy and playing up to his standards the Bruins wouldn't have missed the loss of Boychuk as much as they did.
