The end of the game Düsseldorf vs. Cologne was crazy.

Düsseldorf scored an empty netter with 1:07 left to make it 3-1, but Cologne responds by scoring 2 goals with the extra attacker with 25 seconds and 3 seconds left, before completing the comeback by winning in OT.

I'm sick and wanted to do something other than work for a moment, so I thought it would be interesting to look at the goalies this year with regard to the national team. With all our best goalies not getting any younger there are some encouraging signs from the younger ones.

Outside the DEL, Greiss is no longer a factor and Grubauer is 30.

In the DEL we have the "old guard" (33+):
aus den Birken (37)
Endras (37)
Keller (33)
Jenike (34)

I don't think any of these guys will be a factor on the national team going forward, and some have probably already retired from the team. I always forget to make a note when a player retires from the national team.

The more or less established regulars (27-32):
Niederbeger (29)
Strahlmeier (30)
Brückmann (31)
Reich (27)
Treutle (31)
Weitzmann(27)
Cüpper (28)

Niederberger and Strahlmeier will likely continue to be regulars on the national team, Brückmann may be an option for while. Treutle is probably only an emergency option at this point and unfortunately Reich, Weitzmann and Cüpper have not yet established themselves as starters for their teams, but there is still some upside and they play mostly solid when given the chance. But I doubt any of them will be the future of the national team.

The young-ish options with upside (at least potentially) (22-26):
Pantkowski (24)
Franzreb (26)
Hane (22)
Brenner (25)

Franzreb is basically in the same situation as Reich and Weitzmann. Pantkowski is probably the best bet to become a regular for the national team. He is doing ok so far with a starter's workload, his stats are not spectacular, but that is not just on him.
Hane is in a more difficult situation. Last season he was almost in a 1a/1b situation with Pantkowski. Now he is barely getting any starts with Haukeland being the clear starter, but his talent is still there.
Brenner will likely never be a factor, but he has been exceeding my expectations and might make it as a regular backup, not just for a couple of years, but for the long term.

The prospects (21 and under):
Ancicka (21)
Tiefensee (20)
Bugl (20)
Quapp (19)
Lunemann (20)
Dietl (18)
Doubrawa (21)

Quapp is injured and has not played a game yet. Neither has Lunemann, and Dietl has only played a few minutes in relief.
Doubrawa got to play several games due to injuries and the results were not that great, but he is still young and can improve, though he is unlikely to ever suit up for the national team.
Ancicka is the starter in Berlin and doing a decent enough job. Obviously he cannot replace Niederberger at this point, but his development is still looking good.
Bugl appears to be in the process of winning the starter job in Straubing. He has been playing really well this season and will likely only get better. Of course it helps having a strong team in front of you.
Tiefensee has been outstanding as of late. He got the chance, because of injuries I believe, but his numbers in the last 5 games are just insane. Like Bugl he is in a good situation playing behind a strong team, but he is absolutely making the most of it.
Obviously, the sample sizes for all of them, even Ancicka, are still very small, but it is good to see some more young goalies doing well at this level. If only one of them could turn into a stud goalie to take over when Grubauer, Niederberger etc. retire, it would be great.

Here are the stats for the U23 goalies:

Was just checking to see how Bruckmann was doing this year and was impressed with the numbers Tiefensee has as a 20-year-old.

Since he was born in 2002 I believe he is still eligible for the 2023 NHL Draft.

Does he have that kind of potential and is there any chance that a club takes a late round flier on him?

I am always hesitant when it comes to goalies, cause I don't trust my ability to evaluate their play accurately.

At some point he had a bit of hype which I bought into, but others said it was undeserved. Over the last couple of years I thought he fell behind guys like Bugl (who is also doing well), Lunemann and Quapp. I am very pleasantly surprised by his play so far, but it is still just a short stretch behind a good defense.

So, I don't think he will be considered for the draft by any team unless he wins the starting role, or at least plays a significant number of games and stays at or near this level.
And even then teams may not think it's necessary to use a pick on him. They might just invite him to camp and possibly sign him as free agent later.

Damn, just noticed Bokk on top of the DEL scoring board. How is he looking? Finally putting it together?

The problem with Bokk will likely be that he is not well suited for a bottom 6 or even a middle 6 role, and I don't think he can be a top 6 player in the NHL.
In Frankfurt he walked into the perfect scenario. He got a shot at playing on the top line and top pp unit and did he ever take that chance and ran with it.
His play has much improved from his stint in Berlin, where he was pretty decent, but he was not one of the focal points of their offense.

He should be fine as an elite DEL player or maybe take another shot at playing in Sweden, where I think he could succeed now, or possibly in Switzerland, but NHL might be just out of reach, although I would be interested to see how he does in a training camp before next season.

Will the Canes still hold his rights by then, or can he be invited by any team?

Seems like Andreas Thuresson is one of the best players in DEL. Suprising for me, he was nothing but a grinder in SHL.

I can't really speak to which role he played in Sweden, but some of these are not too shabby for a grinder:

2012-13: 11 G / 8 A / 19 TP - 76th in scoring - 96th in points per game
2013-14: 17 G / 20 A / 37 TP - 15th in scoring - 25th in ppg
2014-15: KHL
2015-16: 14 G / 10 A / 24 TP - 61st in scoring - 63rd in ppg
2016-17: 12 G / 21 A / 33 TP - 19th in scoring - 28th in ppg
2017-18: KHL / NL (SUI)
2018-19: 10 G / 9 A / 19 TP - 109th in scoring - 107th in ppg

Points per game rankings include players with very few games

His whole pro career seems to go a bit up and down. But he is not the first player of this type that found great success in the DEL. He certainly has grinding qualities, but also enough skill that he works as a skilled power forward in this league.

Watched Eisbaren game yesterday which was thrilling alas they didn't make the playoffs (which I'm looking forward to).

I really enjoy the DEL these past few years. Great hockey and excellent fan atmosphere.
