I hear this phrase get thrown around a lot. "He's very raw and has the tools, he could be a very intriguing prospect." Name some prospects that you think fit this bill. Off my head the ones that come to mind are Justin Bailey and Connor Hurley.

Martin Gernat.

Size, great offensive awareness/ability, great skating, good tools, but extremely raw. Huge boom/bust type guy that should be fun to watch for the next 2-3 years

Keegan Kanzig of the Calgary Flames. Not that I expect him to turn into a top-2 defenceman, but owns size and some decent tools. Perhaps a faster Hal Gill in the making.

I only know the Wings so I guess I'll pimp my own guys.

Mattias Janmark - He is a 6'1 191 pound center. He was 26th in SHL scoring this year as a "2nd" year draft pick. He is a late 92 and the Wings had considered drafting him last year but wanted to see more from him. He could develop into a #2C if everything goes right, he's apparently got the size, IQ, skill & skating ability to make it, just a matter of him putting it together. Here are some quotes from Hakan Andersson, the Wings head European scout.

He’s confident with the puck, his speed his fine, his hands are very good, and he’s tenacious — he chases the puck all the time. He’s not physical, but he chases the puck. If he loses it, he chases it and gets it right back. If he doesn’t have the puck, his feet are always moving … I like what he can do with the puck, but that goes along with the fact that he plays with intensity all the time.

Andersson said he considers Janmark-Nylen as good as some of the best Swedish prospects taken in the 2012 draft, including Anaheim Ducks pick and Elite League rookie of the year William Karlsson.

And lastly,

“He’s always just played for the fun of hockey,” Andersson said. “But now he’s realizing, ‘Hey, I could be something.’ Last summer is the first time he’s ever started to train and I think he’s going to take it to another level this summer.”

If you want to read up on him here's a link to the article where I got the quotes.

There's also Backman, Sproul & Athanasiou who fit the bill, maybe even Bertuzzi.

Johnny Gaudreau is one the most intriguing prospect to me. Great hockey sense, has tons of skill and he's a great finisher. He's just stuck in a diminutive frame.

Closer to me, I think Magnus Nygren is an intriguing prospect in the Habs system. A good puck moving D with great power play ability. Can't wait to see what he does in North America.

Players like the Dylan McIlraths or Mark Jankowskis. Guys that were said to have been drafted too high but could turn into great players in the unlikely chance they pan out fully.

From the Leafs, Josh Leivo. We've had a tought time trying to peg his likely potential, the player he will probably end up being. Some think he'll be a scrub that cant hack it in the bigs, others say he could go all the way up the depth chart to scoring lines. No idea how he turns out

Jarrod Maidens. Was supposed to be a mid first rounder in his draft year, hasn't played in a season and a half, and could really be a steal if he becomes healthy again.

I'll second that. Former #4 overall OHL pick, was off to a great start in his draft year, and then gets concussed and hasn't played a game since. He could come back and blow people away, or fall on his face. Very interesting situation.

As Datsyuk said, it's hard to be too in depth with anyone but your own guys, so for the Leafs, I'll go with our 7th rounder this year, Andreas Johnson. Led Frölunda J20 in scoring with 54 points in 42 games, and was more than a PPG at the U19s, too. He's a shrimp at 5'10, 170lbs, but the Swedish posters tell us he's fast as hell and he's got some pretty nifty hands, too. As a 7th rounder, I highly, highly doubt he turns into anything, but he's a skilled guy, and I'm actually excited to see what he can do next year in the SHL :D

Beyond that, Reid Boucher gets surprisingly little chatter despite breaking Stamkos's club goal scoring record. I'll be keeping an eye on him.

Some big names for me are Haydn Fleury, Colin Shirley, and Tanner MacMaster out of the west for the 2014 draft this year.

Haydn has shown very strong late last year and into the Ivan Hlinka. It will be interesting to see what kind of numbers he can put up without getting top PP line minutes behind Dumba. He could go top-10, or be the next Eric Roy. I think he will go somewhere in round one. He knows the defensive side well enough to have value regardless of his offensive output, but that would just be the cherry on top

Shirley is a hard worker, good frame, physical, and smart enough to compliment and make solid plays. Has very projectable tools and could definitely be one of those guys that puts up 50+ points in the Dub this year.

MacMaster is smart but small. Thinks the game at a high level and should dominate a lot of games in the Alberta Junior A route this year. How much will his size/level of competition affect his draft standing? Thats the question.I have him as a 3rd rounder right now.

from the Canes:

Danny Biega - freakishly strong, has great offensive instincts, is quite physical, is a strong skater, and is pretty solid in his own zone. Basically a guy that at least should be SOMETHING at the NHL level in a year or two, but very easily could be a top 4 dman if he keeps developing the way he has... possibly even top pair if he meshes well with Faulk.

Elsewhere:

Mark Alt of the Flyers is another one I've followed... mostly because the Canes drafted him. He fell off the rails early last year, but rebounded nicely in the AHL for the Phantoms. Has the raw athleticism and ability to be a top 4 guy eventually IMO, though he'll probably be a black hole offensively.

Repeating Jankowski. Creative forward, smooth skating, quick hands, great vision and size? Yes please.

If he bulks up, gets use to his new size and learns to better anticipate plays, positioning and the like, he's going to be a gem. As it is now I would say he's a perfect example of having all the tools (outside of muscle/weight) but a huge rawness that keeps him from being a true blue chip prospect.

Teemu Pulkkinen

Could be a top 6 forward. Could be a flop who goes back to Europe and who nobody ever hears of again lol

Jordan Subban - tons of talent, but stuck in a small frame (could grow yet).

I would say Marincin is in the same boat huge project but he is progressing quite well.

I was gunna put Marincin but he probaly has an NHL future, just a matter if its top 4 or as a PP specialist.

Gernat could very well end up in Europe or as a solid NHL D

Kyle Platzer. Tenacious forechecker with decent puck skills, played a very defensive role last year on a deep London team. Could be a steal down the road.

Ryan Kujawinksi. Fast, physical, smart and skilled, just inconsistent as hell. Could be a first line centre or a ECHL grinder

Andrej Sustr. Huge, good shot, decent defense, decent skating. Very raw however.
