Of the top tier nations, Russia probably benefits the most from this, since they upgrade their D the most by combining 2 teams.

Volchenkov was Russia's best D-man in 2010 (due to his physical play, and partly because of Markov's injury), add in Andrei Markov and you have two legitimate top pairing NHL D-men in their prime years being added to the 2024 core, which is already pretty good to begin with.

For the 2024 group, Sergachev turned 25 years old this year and came into his own with an elite season despite giving up PP time to Hedman. Zub and Provorov are solid top pairing guys in their own right.

Add peak generational players in Malkin and Ovechkin to the equation (on different lines please), and this is a gold medal contending team:

Kovalchuk ('10) - Malkin ('10) - Kucherov ('24)
Ovechkin ('10) - Datsyuk ('10) - Semin ('10)
Panarin ('24) - Barbashev ('24) - Radulov ('10)
Kaprizov ('24) - Fedorov ('10) - Nichushkin ('24)
Extra: Kuznetsov ('24)

Sergachev ('24) - Markov ('10)
Provorov ('24) - Zub ('24)
Volchenkov ('10) - Gavrikov ('24)

Sorokin ('24)
Shesterkin ('24)

Centre depth drops off after Datsyuk. Canada is rolling a prime Getzlaf on the 3rd line compared to Ivan Barbashev… top it off with tournament MVP, Jonathan Toews assisting 40-year old Mr. Fedorov to the retirement home.

Russia has good wingers tho and it’s their main advantage over Canada. Canada does get a huge boost by putting guys like Crosby and Point on the wings along with 2010 reinforcements like Iginla, Perry, Nash, Richards and Marleau. Canada’s defence smokes Russia’s by a mile. Goalies are even

Canada sweeps and it’s not remotely close

I would say Russia definitely has the better goalies. Malkin and Datsyuk can play ~50 mins combined, and mitigate the bottom-6 C advantage. Barbashev and Fedorov would be difficult to exploit, as both are defensively responsible Centers, with enough skill to feed their elite wingers the puck. They would be used on the penalty kill and for Dzone faceoffs, with only spot duty at ES outside of that. In this role, Fedorov actually had the same points per game as Getzlaf at the 2010 Olympics, so he could still play. Canada does have a better defence, but Russia's D now has no real holes, for the first time since '96. Again, this would make the games pretty tight. I agree that Russia also has the advantage on the wings.

Agree to disagree.

Agree to disagree.

Canada's forwards feast on Russia's D. That might be the biggest mismatch in the top 5 countries.

2010 Luongo and Brodeur are good enough especially with Canada team defence.

Adding Makar, McDavid and MacKinnon alone to one of the best hockey teams ever iced is unfair.

There are maybe 2 top pairing D (0 top 10 on either time period) on this team. Canada/USA/Sweden could ice 6 star first pairing D.

I feel like McDonagh needs to be on this team. He was fantastic in 2010. Also interesting how many more 2024 Americans there are than 2010 comapred to Canada and Sweden where I feel like it's more from 2010.
