Hello?!? You play to WIN THE GAME! It would be a massively good sign if we're capable of winning games 5-4 in the regular season.

Didn't get to listen to the game but sounds like Gabby had a good night. And I'd just like to coin the phrase Boone Swoon. Dude could be a stud.

This time he's a real backup goalie with 50+ games in the league.

Assuming you take away his 11-12 numbers in one quality start while playing for Phoenix, I've got him at A 21-26-4 record in NHL starts with a 2.93 GAA and a SV% of .900 on the dot. Maybe he's good enough to be an NHl level backup, but I'm still leery of him.

In the years where he's been most depended on:
Calgary (10 games) 09-10: 3.22 0.885
Anaheim (10 games) 09-10: 2.76 0.917
Anaheim (21 games) 10-11: 3.43 0.890

I think those speak for themselves ^

So, if Bobrovsky goes down, we're toast. But even if Bobrovsky stays healthy and McBackup does get 10 games, I don't see him winning more than 5 based on past NHL experience. Keep in mind his last NHL regular season start was December 31, 2011. Sure he played decent for the Falcons, but he's back in the big show now. Being signed to a one way deal, he's going to have to do I think unless a change is made, which I don't expect.

Richards said in the postgame presser that the defense didn't give him much in the way of support in the second period, so I will give him that.

Except this time, he's not a career minor leaguer with only 1 NHL game under his belt. This time he's a real backup goalie with 50+ games in the league.

Does no one remember that Curtis Sanford (108 games NHL experience, including two full seasons splitting starts) was signed at the same time as Dekanich?

I love that we just keep winning. Really seems like that winning culture is in the room. Through the end of last season now into the preseason, losing just doesn't appear to be much of an option to our guys.

for whoever was asking - Gaby was with Dubi...not Joey

i like the way Collins battles, such as his goal to win

dayyyyyyam Boone

dayyyyyyam Gaby

Dubi trying to get top line center role tonight...10 of 19 on faceoff, 3 assists

as far as the back up debate, i'm really rooting for McKenna...seems like a good dude...and backed up more by AlisonL who has a story coming soon on him...

loved how Dubi played out there. that's the kinda game he needs to bring to get us into the playoffs. smart, gritty, relentless.

Hey guys, good game tonight. Entertaining even as a loss, with the way it swung back and forth.

A few observations you might find useful since there was no TV on either side:

- McElhinney was bad. I can't sugar coat it. Semin beat him cleanly twice on direct shots, and the Welsh goal was a floating backhander from a low-scoring AHL'er. The only one where the defense was at fault was the Staal goal, where the puck was blocked down by a crowd and Staal found it at the edge of the crease.

- Gaborik looked really strong. Dubinsky played a nasty, gritty game. Jenner was the third guy on that line and he was basically feeding off the havoc that those two were wreaking. On his goal, Gaborik made a slap-pass to find him standing completely open with an empty net.

- I can't remember who wears #6, but he was injured in the third period and left the game. Ryan Murphy was trying to slap the puck around the boards as he approached the Jackets' blue line, and the puck went right off #6's ankle or foot. He made it back to the bench on one foot, and he had to be helped to the locker room with his foot up.

- I saw two CBJ jerseys in the building, so somebody is repping you guys down here :)

I absolutely despise Tim Thomas with the white hot intensity of a billion suns, but I'd ask Zito to get on the line to Florida and ask him to be released from his tryout and sign him to a one year deal.

I don't like his politics, but who cares, he's a hockey player. I don't expect hockey players to know anything about the world. What's important is he could be a very good backup, and his demands to be a starter aren't likely to be fulfilled in Florida either, so maybe we could lure him into a backup job.

I just watched the highlights (all the goals are up on nhl.com), and lots of nice plays around. My favorite play was Erixon setting up Jenner with a fake-shot pass for an easy goal.

It's a bummer Nikitin took one off the foot and may be injured. I bet Murray's ears perked up when he heard about it.

The positive was the way in which the Jackets fought back despite the quick 3 goals Carolina put up in the 2nd. In the past, that would have been it, but not for this group. Hopefully they can carry over from last season the ability to claw back into games.

Overall, I never put too much stock into pre-season games. In my opinion it's mostly about situations and seeing how players react, not necessarily the final score. The ability to capitalize on the Hurricanes' parade to the penalty box was also something you wouldn't have seen in the past.

I know there's been talks since last season on who the captain should be(Johnson vs Dubinsky) but after tonight's performance, should it be Dubinsky? Or should they just go with all A's again and let the group lead the way?

I say no C. It seems to leave more room for whoever wants to step up to do it.

Disappointed that Jarmo pulled a Howson (see Dekanich, Mark).

Oh god... The season hasn't even started yet and we're already calling McElhinney the next Dekanich. :shakehead

With a career record of 19-26-4 (not exactly sure what the 4 are) an .899 save percentage, and a GAA of 3.10, I think he is more likely to be a Dekanich-like result rather than a Bob-like acquisition. Not saying Deke was bad as he never got to play just the end result that year with no proven backup to start the season.

Lets say Bob stays healthy and starts 70 games. What's a realistic number of points he can produce? 60% wins gives 84 (at best). 65% gives 91 or so. We need a solid performance from our backup.
At least a point a start.

Obviously that decision wouldn't be made in the context of "after tonight's performance".

In all honestly, I don't think the decision is important and it will resolve itself in due time. However they go, I will likely be fine with the decision. We have plenty of options.

Good for Jenner and I'm glad to see Gaborik get off to a good start, even if it is preseason.
