Chico on how he found out about his tribute night.

Well at the end of last season when I made it known that I was going to retire, Lou Lamorello, Scott O’Neil and Hugh Weber who are the day to day operators there said to me: “Hey Chico, we’re going to have a night for you next season”, and I thought, “A night for me? What could this be about?” I didn’t do anything to stand out in any way or did anything that you expect to get a special night for. I’m certainly not a hall of famer as a broadcaster or player. I tried to do a good job each night, come prepared, have fun with the fans and was enthusiastic but nothing that made me an Emmy award winner! I would leave that to Doc Emrick who was picking up all of those Emmys. It was just really overwhelming and I would like to thank those guys very much.

Management and I talked and I told them that they could even make it an pre-season game if they wanted to. I gotta tell ya though, when you look at all the greats that were celebrated by the Devils on the ice like Scott Stevens, Ken Daneyko, Scott Neidermayer or Martin Brodeur as he will be one day, I’m thinking, “What am I doing down here?” Then I got to thinking, “Well I helped put a lot of guys in the hall of fame with all the games I gave up!”

So maybe that’s my niche here, that’s where it was at and they decided it would be on October 24th.

Apparently the team held a private dinner for Chico at the arena bunker lounge tonight;

If this first picture doesn't sum up Chico...

Gunna miss having that enthusiasm around, even when times have been tough recently with this team, Chico was always there to provide a laugh

Really great job by the organization to have the dinner and night to honor him

What a great guy.

Got to meet him 3 or 4 times at the Rock over the years and you would think I was a long lost cousin. There is no way in hell he would have known or remembered meeting me before but each time I met him it was like he was saying hello to an old friend. He really tried to make people feel good and he is just a genuinely nice guy

Such a great ambassador for the Devils and this quote from the Fire and Ice article pretty much nails it. What a great guy. I miss him

Emrick has often said, “People came up to him because they knew they could.†And that is certainly part of Resch’s appeal.

“It’s not like I just go and say, ‘I’m going to say hi to that person,’†Resch said. “I just found that fans are very responsive. They just want to be noticed. They just want to say, ‘Hey, he noticed me and he actually listened to me and he responded.’ It’s nothing major. I just have that knack maybe because I never dreamt I’d make the NHL.

God, Chico is awesome. I really wish I was going tonight. :(

Are you banned from The Rock? :sarcasm:
I think you said you couldn't make the home opener either?

In all seriousness, I know a few guys that are "banned", due to "actions" during the 2008 playoff series vs the Rags.

But, I still see them at Devils games quite often, its not like security carries pictures of the banned list around with them.

And yes to the other posts above, Chico was probably the most approchable and humble guy in the biz.
It disgusted me to ever read any fan (mostly Rags fans) discredit or take cheap shots at him in a malicious tone.

Fans of any team would agree he was a genuinely great guy once they got a chance to meet him in person.

Haha, unfortunately previous engagements are taking precedent. These days, funds are too tight for me to go as often as I used to.

I will be there on the 4th for my birthday, though, so I'm happy I'll make it out soon.

Good to hear, hope NJD gives you a good present that night, to hear Glory Days shortly after the final horn.
