What I see from the stats point of view is that Ovechkin shoots much less on PP now. He do the same thing as he always do and he is a deadly goal scorer. But the four guys around him were unable to provide this season as much shoot and score opportunities as we had before.

That is part of the defense too though, right? As well as the amount of power plays they get a game?

PK’s have seemingly done a lot more to prevent Ovechkin from teeing it up over the years, and of course the amount of PP shots is directly related to amount of PP minutes a player gets.

better stat would be Ovechkins shots per PP. what has that done over the years? Total shots/60 has far too many variables.

More and more teams are choosing to shadow Ovechkin and take him out of the play. They realize that neither Kuzy nor Backstrom will shoot often and neither can shoot a one timer. The result is that the pk stands the top player in Carlson's shooting lane and the right side guy in Ovechkin's shooting lane. They collapse the other 2 on Oshie. You can always see that the guy on the half wall can skate the puck straight to 15ft in front of the net before being challenged.

In the end those two guys need to score

Did the Caps PP shot totals overall go down? It did feel like we spent less in the offensive zone on the PP last year in general than any other year before, whether it was because we couldn't get into the zone in the first place to set things up or a lot of turnovers. That is just a gut feeling though, I dont have any numbers to back that up.

Good luck with this guy, hopefully he can do better coaching the Washington d-corps than he did coaching (more like destroying) our PP.

Really, y'all should thank McCarthy for even having Laviolette, since he was a big part of why Lavi got fired in the end.

There was a slight drop off, but nothing significant. They went from 50.55 SF/60 on the PP (17th in the league) in 18/19 to 49.84 (23rd) in 19/20.

My impression was that they had a notably harder time setting up Ovechkin's shot this year. It seems like they've been generating way fewer shots from the Oshie spot for a couple of years now, but I don't know whether the numbers back that up.

More teams are playing Ov 1 on 1 and effectively taking him out. They collapse on the bumper position and take away the Carlson shot as well. That gives Backstrom and Kuznetsov an open shot that the goalie knows is coming. Backstrom doesnt want to shoot a 25ft wrist shot. So they dont shoot it

With right left matchups on defense who is paired on third with Jensen assuming no more roster moves are made

Someone said in another thread Fever-LaDue will be Hershey's 1st pair.
Oh good. Another RD

Jensen’s slot could easily be filled then. Interesting.

I’d deal Jensen + Hathaway for a winger for the top 9.

-Replace Hathaway w either a min vet winger or someone from Hershey.
-Replace Jensen in the starting lineup w TVR, and sign another vet RD to fill Jensen’s slot.

Should mean 3.25m for a winger. Either via trade of of the remaining FA’s

Ovechkin - Kuznetsov — Wilson
Vrana - Backstrom - Vet LW
Hagelin/Panik - Eller - Oshie
Hagelin/Panik - Dowd - Sprong/Hershey RW
Hershey F

Orlov - Carlson
Dillon - Schultz
Siegenthaler - TVR
Fever - Vet RW/LaDue
Vet RW/LaDue

Samsonov
Lundqvist

obviously Fever and LaDue are in Hershey, but that’s how I could see it looking.

I’d also like to mix the middle 6 a little bit to get more consistent scoring opportunities
