Ah, yes, now I see it, Whitesnake. I was going to pick on you for forgetting to, you know, link to the site.


The name has been floating around HF for a few weeks now. The early consensus is that some of the info was scraped from Cap Geek, and that maybe their sources aren't as accurate (or well-placed) as Matt's sources.

Yeah, it's proving that there was a lot more going on behind the scenes to allow Matt to keep his site up to date than we all ever realized.

features I want, from anyone:
waiver status or calculator (eligible/exempt)
free agent finder with stats (like capgeek had)
comparable players (like capgeek had)



as for who 'wins'? still undetermined. generalfanager and hockeyscap both plan on adding new features, but the real thing that made capgeek better than hb and nhlnumbers was accuracy + getting the contracts that wernt reported in the media. We'll get a chance this july to see if anyone can pick up that role.

Can't stand how blocky and large things are on that site. I mean I'm glad to see some sort of replacement up and running... but it has the feel as if it was a 10 yr old that designed the layout and whatnot.

Luongo's name is VERY fun to chant - I can agree with ya there.

However, of all the myriad of things to tar, feather, pull, tear, spindle, fold, and mutilate Bettman over, not buying capgeek is NOT one of them. It was never for sale. And nobody else could have bought it - buying it would be useless to any entity outside of the NHL, since it depended on the owner's close ties to sources for the contract info.

Now, would I rake Bettman over the coals for not creating a similar page to CapGeek on the NHL.com site? Probably. But I bet there's something in the CBA that prevents this. Or maybe he doesn't want to piss off the NHLPA...a third time. I can see how casual bro-style fans would click on NHL.com's "You Be The GM!" page, see that their least favorite player is making XXX million, and go off on an anti-player rant - not something the NHL or NHLPA wants.

Hockey websites try to fill void left by CapGeek

The sites are not yet perfect. There are glitches. And there are numbers that aren’t quite accurate. Though both General Fanager and Hockey’s Cap have Patrice Bergeron’s cap number listed at $6.875 million — the correct number — NHLnumbers still has it at $6.5 million.

The bigger issue will be how the sites continue to update themselves with new contract information.

All acknowledge that much of their data still comes from cached versions of CapGeek. In fact, Poraszka is careful to relay that General Fanager mined CapGeek’s data manually rather than scraping it with a script. That’s important to him.

It will be important, too, to see the networks that the new sites can cultivate, as they work to confirm information from fine print on contracts to the status of players on injured reserve. (In the interest of full disclosure, Wuest once asked me to confirm something for him, which I did, with Chiarelli.)

He was a journalist who actually cultivated sources to get the details no-one else took the time to. Capgeek was actually the public 'source' of contract info for a number of minor signings.

Going forward, someone will eventually step into that role, but it remains to be seen whom.

Until the NHL gets their head out of their ass, unlikely. Bettman wants fans to focus on the on-ice product, not the business side of things (such as player salaries).

But, according to commissioner Gary Bettman, there is not the fan interest for such a tool, like Capgeek.com, which was a valuable resource for fans and media but ceased operations in early January due to the health of its founder Matthew Wuest.

And I do agree that there is not interest among casual fans. But among those of us here there is much interest and want for it.

War-on-ice launched its cap section today. Among its features is performance bonus penalties, which has Blackhawk fans slightly concerned today. They previously announced a partnership with General Fanager.

edit. I'll just add that can someone here tell with 100% certainty that he/she knows someone who completely agreed with Bettman?
