Cam Ward clearly reaches up and takes his own mask off as the puck is going in and they waive it off.

9.5 Protective Equipment - All protective equipment, except gloves, headgear and goalkeepers’ leg guards must be worn under the uniform. Should it be brought to the attention of the Referee that a player or goalkeeper is wearing, for example, an elbow pad that is not covered by his jersey, he shall instruct the player or goalkeeper to cover up the pad and a second violation by the same player or goalkeeper would result in a minor penalty being assessed.

. . .

9.5 Protective Equipment -- When a goalkeeper has lost his helmet and/or face mask and his team has possession of the puck, the play shall be stopped immediately to allow the goalkeeper the opportunity to regain his helmet and/or face mask. When the opposing team has possession of the puck, play shall only be stopped if there is no immediate and impending scoring opportunity. This stoppage of play must be made by the Referee. When play is stopped because the goalkeeper has lost his helmet and/or face mask, the ensuing face-off shall take place at one of the defending team’s end zone face-off spots.

When a goalkeeper deliberately removes his helmet and/or face mask in order to secure a stoppage of play, the Referee shall stop play as outlined above and in this case assess the goalkeeper a minor penalty for delaying the game. If the goalkeeper deliberately removes his helmet and/or face mask when the opposing team is on a breakaway, the Referee shall award a penalty shot to the non-offending team. If the goalkeeper deliberately removes his helmet and/or face mask during the course of a penalty shot or shootout attempt, the Referee shall award a goal to the non-offending team.

14.1 Adjustment to Clothing or Equipment - Play shall not be stopped nor the game delayed by reasons of adjustments to clothing, equipment, skates or sticks.

The onus of maintaining clothing and equipment in proper condition shall be upon the player. If adjustments are required, the player shall leave the ice and play shall continue with a substitute.

No delay shall be permitted for the repair or adjustment of goalkeeper’s equipment. If adjustments are required, the goalkeeper shall leave the ice and his place shall be taken by the substitute goalkeeper immediately.

Goaltenders are told to remove their mask the minute the strap breaks for the referee to stop play.

Yep, not unprecedented though. Has happened way to many times, too bad the goal review system is a total joke.

I guess you can decide to remove your mask whenever you want to negate any goal. Disgusting call. No whistle was ever blown until the puck was in the back of the net. :shakehead

So he can play the puck after his helmet is struck, then wait for the Rangers at the blueline to fire it, then finally decide to take it off right as he's getting beat? Wow, good tip that all goalies should know to help their GA%

Any video? Didn't see it. If his mask really was broken, then is it coincidental or convenient timing on his part?

Maybe he was trying to wait for a regular whistle but when he saw the play was coming back quickly went for it?

I just have a hard time believing a pro would do something like that. I'll wait for video before judging

He didn't remove his mask the minute it broke. He waited for the guy to shoot.

He took a shot off the mask, then once he fought off the contact in the crease, he removed his mask.

It's unfortunate that it removed a goal for the Rangers, but he removed it as soon as he was able.

Hank should just his mask off when another team has a 1 on 1 with the goalie. He can say his mask wasn't in place.

This rule is utter ****.

Cleanest hockey play I have seen in a while, players safety should be the #1 priority for the NHL.

Strap was broken. Rules are rules, good or not.

The rule is there to protect goalies, it's not a get out of goal free card. Ward had no intention of stopping play until he got in trouble. There was a long delay between the shot that broke the strap and the goal.

As someone else said, taking your mask off when the puck is in the slot is totally safe >.>

He took it off to prevent a goal, nuff said. It was a disgusting play to take advantage of the NHL's obsession with safety.

You seem to believe there was a good few minutes between the shot that that broke the strap and the shot from the point,

Did the MSG replay not show what was happening in the crease after the strap broke?

Moreover, the whistle wasn't even blown until the puck was in, so I'm not sure how that's even legally waived off even without the helmet.

It might have been loose or something, but he definitely didn't adjust it right away. He knocked it when there was a dangerous shot by the Rangers.

Refs didn't even blow the whistle before the puck went in. They did after.
