  • selected second overall in the 2011 QMJHL Entry Draft behind MacKinnon, with whom he shares great chemistry
  • not only keeps up with skilled players, but also complements them with his superior puckhandling skills
  • dangles with the puck as if it were on a string
  • quite undersized by NHL standards, however his family is quite tall and his older brother underwent a big growth spurt – six inches – prior to turning 18
  • lack of size may be the lone attribute missing here however, as he is an absolute tyrant in the offensive zone
  • his hockey sense plus his ability to manufacture offence are a potent mix that separates him as a player
  • head is always up
  • extremely gifted puckmover with patience and poise
  • hard on the puck for his size – and difficult to dispossess
  • can thread the needle on a pass – waiting that extra second to let a play unfold – or open up a goalie and gingerly slide the puck through the opening
  • very calculating – like a chessmaster evaluating options in the offensive zone as he waits for the pieces to fall into place before committing
  • not the most courageous – yet equipped with an innate ability to sense danger, elude hits, and dispose of the puck before the opposition can get a read on him
  • does a good job of disguising his actions by the manner in which his blade is turned – making goalies unsure whether he will pass or shoot
  • can be a little perimeter at times and doesn’t attack or drive the net – and there’s also not much push-back to his game
  • deceptively fast and agile – able to blow by opponents endowed with staggering levels of quickness – plus the capacity to shift between those different gears effortlessly
  • darts into scoring areas making sudden rapid diagonal cuts and quick moves
  • hands are also lightning quick as is his shot release
  • his versatility and ability to excel as either a centerman or winger – only adds value to the package.

If RNH can play in the NHL at 18, Drouin can as well.

I think any NHL coach (especially those on teams with a top-3 pick) would find it extremely difficult to cut him. Going into Team Canada camp, he was a long-shot to make the team. He played his way onto the team; and it's likely he would most non-playoff NHL teams. Once you watch him play, he makes it impossible to cut him.

He's elusive and dynamic every time he touches the puck. Slightly undersized (room to grow as a 17) but is extremely strong on his skates; and one of the shiftiest players I've seen play in recent memory (I can see the Kane comparison for sure).

MacKinnon has the stronger overall skating stride - unbelievable how strong his first couple strides are, amazing acceleration. Both use their speed and are very responsible defensively - I'd credit that to borderline elite hockey sense (elite's a tricky word) and attention to detail instilled by Dom Ducharme.

Drouin's high shooting percentage is a interesting number. As talented as he is, I'd consider him more of a playmaker than a natural scorer, but he's so unpredictable with the puck he makes it difficult for QMJHL level goalies and D to anticipate his decision making. A lot of his goals are plays where 1/2 the rink is anticipating a touch pass to his finisher's (Frk/Nate both know how to find twine) and he's able to freeze the goalie and finish with his stickhandling ability. I'd say that his shot is effective but not necessary the strongest aspect to his game.

He's got a touch of Datsyukian in him but will never play center - where the Kane comparison comes from. Definitely doesn't have the two-way play or the elite dangles but has a soft touch.

That being said, I can see the upside of Seth Jones. I've only seen him once live and admittedly don't watch a ton of WHL games (saw one on Sportsnet) but I liked his play and ability to play minutes on a gold-medal winning WJC squad.

I couild eventually see it going Dru - Jones - Nate or Nate - Jones - Dru but it's a close race. I've seen much more of the Moose duo than any in the draft, and am far from a professional scout. The other high-end prospect that intrigues me this year is Elias Lindholm, but I unfortunately haven't seen much of him.

Continuing from the other thread... I really don't think we should jump to saying that both Drouin and Nate won't be sent back down.

Look at Jonathan Huberdeau.. a 3rd overall pick.. he put up 105pts in 67 games his draft year, taken by a weak Florida team, and was sent back down. Everyone says that centers are more sought after than wingers, Huberdeau is a center.. If he can have this happen, so can one of Drouin/MacKinnon. It doesn't matter how well you do in junior, if you aren't performing when they call you up for the tryout games, they aren't going to keep you!!

Honestly, I think by the time October 15th-ish rolls by, we'll see Drouin in a Mooseheads jersey. If he plays the full season, he'll put up around 120 pts..

Huberdeau was not as strong on his skates as Drouin is now. Drouin is already heavier than Huberdeau at the same age and as we are talking. That will help his transition to the NHL quicker than Huberdeau.

I think Moose fans are going to bring up every/any reason for Drouin to get sent back because we don't want to face reality that they both might be gone next year lol ...

I'd say the Patrick Kane comparison is best, would not be surprised if he becomes even better (early to say that i know) but the kid has some of the best puck skills i've ever seen.

Patrick Kane has also become quite the playmaker though. Does Drouin have that in his repertoire right now, that it could possibly translate to the NHL?

Elite playmaking skills, but there will be a transition period. Drouin @ 22 will be more of a playmaker than Kane is now ( assuming Kane is 22-ish).

Kane is 24, but I agree with what you're saying.

But speaking of "22".. John Tavares is 22, and I don't know about you guys, but to me it feels like he should be so much older!! I guess when your name is being thrown around like his has for the last, what, 9 years.. it makes him seem older than he is.

Another thing I noticed about Drouin is that he uses an all white stick (white tape) and I can imagine it's hard for goalies to pick up the puck right away. Add that to his quick release and accurate shot, and it helps with his deception level.

edit: guy above just beat me. But Mooseheads are doing damn good tonight. Fucale has only made 5 saves
