The Erie Otters announced Wednesday afternoon that McDavid suffered a fracture of the fifth metacarpal bone in a fight Tuesday night with Mississauga's Bryson Cianfrone when he missed and hit the top of the boards. The fractured bone extends from the base of the pinkie finger to the wrist.
McDavid will not require surgery.
The 17-year-old junior hockey phenom saw a hand specialist in Toronto after X-rays after Tuesday's game were not definitive. Six weeks from Wednesday falls on Dec. 24.

Just as I predicted.
It was a Boxer's fracture.

He was swinging his fist around a little over-zealously.

Ban fighting? If it was a "non top prospect" player, no one would even care that he broke his hand.

It takes two to tango. It's part of the game, especially in the heat of the moment. The kid will be fine and will still go #1.

I am guessing this is the last fight we are ever going to see Connor McDavid participate in

10 days ago, the airwaves and internet were replete with glowing memorials to the career, elbows -- and fist-fights -- of Gordie Howe. That's Mr. Hockey; not Johnny Hockey. There were fond anecdotes recalled of Gordie Howe's legendary fight with the Ranger's Lou Fontinato and many others -- including Maurice "the Rocket" Richard. Every commentator and analyst threw out the old chestnut of the meaning behind the The Gordie Howe Hat trick; and what it meant to be able to do all three: a hockey player who brought a complete game to the rink every night.

Ten days later, we get this meek, revisionist -- and frankly embarrassing -- New Agey spin on what makes a hockey player a hockey player. We read now what fans supposedly want to see from an OHL hockey game. This, from a league where there are MORE FIGHTS, not less, than the NHL.

And yet you write BOTH these articles in less than 14 days? Do you think we're that stupid? That our memories are that deficient?

Integrity is something you have or you don't have. It isn't a sweater you put on when it is chilly -- and take off when the going gets warm.

They didn't call it a Gordie Howe Hat Trick for dangles and speed. We need fighting in hockey.

So if Connor broke his leg blocking a shot would there be an outcry to stop blocking shots? Yawn!

metacarpal neck fracture (ie. boxer's or fighter's fracture) is the most common of fractures to the fifth meatcarpal. Healing time 3-5 weeks, so 5-6 weeks is very conservative. Other fractures of fifth metacarpal are base (3-6 weeks) and shaft (3- 7 weeks)

Lol in all seriousness, Drew Miller of the Red Wings had the same injury returned exactly in 4 weeks. He'll be fine for the World Juniors, and he'll be in form unlike Stamkos preparing for Sochi because it is his hand.

Was reading up on his injury and it was his 4th Metacarpal of his right(top) hand. He didn't have surgery either. You're right, as long as theres no setbacks, he should be good to go for Canada.

I don't like bringing this incident up in the anti-fighting debate because the major issue with fighting is concussions and thier long term effects.

McDavid could've simply kept his gloves on and he would've been fine here.

And let the other guy take shots at him?

Or he could've not instigated the fight. The video clearly shows McDavid as a willing combatant. McDavid also can't win in this situation. Skates away...he's got no fortitude...engage and actually start the fight..he's stupid. The choice was his..he acted..got hurt..mental note for future reference...life goes on.

Ok how many others on Sweden? Because canada will be missing half a team

Sweden has missed key players at WJC last 5 years, so has Canada.

But Burakovsky is swedens best player while Canada will probably have Mcdavid anyway.

USA has always had their best players, thats why they're so successful.

In semi-related Erie Otters news

The Canadian Press
Published Thursday, November 13, 2014 11:36AM EST
ERIE, Pa. -- A subsidiary of the Edmonton Oilers has sued the owner of the junior league Erie Otters for US$4.5 million.
An Oilers spokesman says the NHL team isn't commenting on the lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court in Erie.
The Oilers' subsidiary, Ontario Major Junior Hockey Corp., says it loaned Otters owner Sherry Bassin $4.2 million as part of a never-completed deal to buy the Otters. The subsidiary planned to move the team to Hamilton.
The lawsuit seeks repayment plus interest. It says Bassin didn't sell the Otters to someone else by a Dec. 26 deadline, which would have given Bassin the money to repay the loan.
Bassin tells the Erie Times-News, which first reported the lawsuit, he doesn't expect the lawsuit to affect plans to sell the team to one of two possible buyers.

Just business? Or are the Oilers mad at Erie Otters for damaged goods...:sarcasm:

No they haven't. And the amount of success they achieve seems to vacillate wildly from year to year.
