Engerlanddd!
As was Volchenkov, I'm sure some of the younger posters don't remember those days as much though (wow this post makes me feel quite old)

Throwback to Mezsaros, Volchenkov, Kuba, Redden, Chara, and of course the Big Rig himself...

ahh, memories.

Still sad that era didn't produce a Cup. What a great assembly of talent. With money and good management that group could have been a Wings/Avs/Hawks group.

I don't know if we will ever see that much talent on a team in the cap era.

Well to be fair, no other defencemen in the NHL can stop either of those two for an entire series including Nashville who some called the best defence in the NHL. It's a little too much to expect a rookie defencemen to do it & Methot while doing well couldn't stop both of them either.

Crosby had no even strength goals and only 2 even strength points the entire series against Ottawa. Methot had the same amount of even strength points in that series, and was as big a factor as anyone for Crosby's lesser numbers. He was a warrior in that series, probably as tough on Crosby as anyone I've seen over the years.

Best defensive defenseman we ever had was Chara and it's not even close. I also believe he should have won a Norris or two as a senator but shady politics was already part of the NHL awards back then.

Sencond best? Prime Philips, Volchenkov or Methot? Hard to say. I think I would go with Methot because of his mobility and physical play. Then Prime Phillips 2002-2007, then Volche who was an absolute warrior.

What Vegas was asking in order to select Claesson instead of Methot is disgusting. I'm glad Dorion didn't bite. It sucks to lose Methot, I'm still pissed at how poorly GMPD dealt through this but I'm already over it. Let's focus on how to replace him.

One side of me wants to see Claesson be promoted while Boro, Harpur, Englund and Chabot can fight for the last spot, on the other hand, I don't want to relive the fail experiment this organization repeat every time we lose an important asset and we decide to "improve from withtin". If we can grab Alzner as a UFA. I'm sure anybody would love to be EK65 partner. Or even Markov on a 1 year, as a PP specialist.

What is even more pathetic is them trying to immediately trade him somewhere else. I love that he is using his ntc to make it harder for Vegas to trade him.

Yeah he asked for his NTC list because he wasn't gonna trade the guy.

OK, so:

1) Dorion is a hype man at heart. This time, instead of over-hyping one of our prospects (which he does with almost every single prospect), he's over-hyping the organization.

I basically read that one tiny part of the quote (because it's a cherry picked quote taken from a much longer point Dorion was making - see point #2) as a loose paraphrase of the "In the end, we decided that players are human beings, not just assets! We're so nice to our players, everyone should want to play here! We're (insert one: a family / a close knit bunch of guys / part of a brotherhood, etc...). ISN'T THIS THE BEST PLACE TO PLAY IF YOU ARE AN UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT, FELLOW HOCKEY UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS?" mantra we've been throwing out to the public since forever.

Some of y'all need to start reading between the lines. This organization has been advertising itself to UFAs as some variation of "a great place to raise a family / a family organization / a hockey organization that treats players like brothers / "The ThunderDome, But With Respect Instead of Thunder" since basically the Rod Bryden era, and we doubled down on it in the Bryan Murray era. It's been our sales pitch for decades. People should know what it looks like by now.

2) the quote is being taken hilariously out of context. It's only one sentence of a much larger point. If you want to actually see Pierre Dorion say the quote, here's the rest of the quote in question, it's all in this video - starts around 6:45

"We did explore options, but at the same time, if you trade Marc, probably the asset you're getting back you're going to have to leave unprotected, and then Vegas is going to take ANOTHER asset, so at the same time there's a chance we're going to lose 2 or 3 assets just to protect one, and that's something we weren't ready to do as an organization. We have tremendous respect for Marc, for what he's accomplished for Ottawa. He's a salt of the earth guy, but at the same time we have to do what's best for the Ottawa Senators Hockey Team."

Methot refuses to waive a clause in his contract,
Sens Fans: "YEAH, SWEET BRO, STICK IT TO THE MAN!"

Phaneuf refuses to waive a clause in his contract,

Absolutely nothing alike.

I would put Big Rig as the 2nd. Back in our prime years, he was considered one of the best defensive defensemen in the entire league.
