In October 1987, in the final week of replacement football, the Bills and Giants faced off in Buffalo with rosters made up of teachers, truck drivers and, running rampant, the greatest linebacker of all time. The scab players treated the fans and future Hall of Fame coaches Bill Parcells and Marv Levy to a flag-filled game of futility, with two field goals in regulation. The game was mercifully put to death with a field goal in the final seconds of overtime by a ski instructor and future Hollywood cameraman. The Bills quarterback that day still holds the record for completions, attempts and passing yards by a player who played in just one NFL game.

Brian McClure was sitting in the quarterbacks meeting room, running through the Bills’ game plan on Wednesday, October 14, 1987 - exactly 30 years ago this week. It was nearing the end of the NFL players’ strike, but in four days McClure, Buffalo’s replacement QB, was set to make his first professional start, against the Giants. Then a coach came bursting through the doors breathless, with an update. Lawrence Taylor, the Lawrence Taylor, had just crossed the picket line. Yes, the coach said after the inevitable follow-up question. Taylor would be suiting up on Sunday.

In that moment, two words came to McClure’s mind:

@ScottSBucs -
Jameis Winston says he feels pretty good and his shoulder is getting better every day. Winston says the call on whether or not he plays Sunday is a “team decision,” meaning he and the coaches and the trainers together. HC Dirk Koetter says the team decided NOT to have Jameis Winston throw today but Winston will get all the 1st-team snaps on Friday.

Tampa Bay QB Jameis Winston was held out of all throwing drills for a second straight day at practice Thursday as he continues to recover from a sprained AC joint. Head coach Dirk Koetter explained. “Jameis did not throw today,” said Koetter. “We made a decision to hold him for another day from throwing. He did everything else. I would full expect that Jameis takes all the snaps with the ones on Friday.”

What a game. Thank god Oakland pulled it out, all I care about is the draft pick we own from KC. Hoping they stumble the rest of the way and finish 8-8/9-7 but KC is really good, I expect them to easily reach 10/11 wins.

But DeShaun Watson should prove you don't need a top 3 pick to find a QB.
