I don't think any NHL team wants him as a permanent 4th liner, but as a guy who can play 25ish games as a 13/14, you could do worse.

He's one of those guys who seems to have carved out a pretty respectable career of just being a depth forward where "you could do worse", because he's not a complete liability. Just gives you a handful of "nothing" minutes, collects his cheque, and moves on to the next place.

Wouldn't even be surprised to see him sign a minimum dollar contract with someone else as the season rolls on and injuries happen.

Can't even really blame him for not wanted to accept assignment back down to the AHL. He's made decent money over his career, he presumably doesn't really need to play in the AHL to eek out those extra few bucks. And for a player like him...once you accept that demotion, that could very well be it for any hopes of continuing your NHL career. Could just end up "stuck" down there, pigeonholed into the "not an NHL player anymore" perception...especially since he doesn't really have the offensive chops to put up big numbers down there either. Just waiting for someone to have injuries and need a bit of "free" NHL depth might well be the better career move for him, if he has any chance of continuing his NHL career.

So is he going to refuse to report and then sign in Europe somewhere?
He's being released from contract, and will probably spend Christmas at home with his wife and child, their extended family, and the $13-million he's made playing hockey to date.

In the New Year his agent will probably let him know if there are any interesting opportunities in Switzerland, Germany, Scandinavia or elsewhere.

If there are none, maybe they spend some time together in the Caribbean for a few weeks or longer.

I don't think money is a problem.

Rough life, eh?

He was only given 8 minutes of ice time in the two games he played this season.

He was Seattle's top penalty killer last season and one of the few forwards on that team to finish the season with a positive +/-

Sheahan has very little offensive upside, so if you are hoping to get production from your fourth line, he is not your guy, but if you want solid defensive play from your 4th line/13th forward who is a strong penalty killer and won't usually cost you games in limited minutes, Sheahan can still fill that role.

He played a crazy amount of games for his skill level. Not surprised he cleared. Has a young family maybe it’s time to plant his feet somewhere and think life after hockey.

Saw him for a while with the Pens a few years ago. He was an extremely vanilla player. He reminded me of another former Pens player in Nick Spaling. Both players were just kind of there. They really didn't hurt you or help you. I guess that ability to be very vanilla, take a shift and not hurt the team is enough to hang around the league for a while though.

The Athletic published an article by Matthew Fairburn on this topic.

He'll turn 31 years old in two weeks. He and his wife had their first child in the last year.

He's played in eight different cities in six organizations over the past five years.

He isn't interested in bumping around on busses in the AHL and being away from his young family at this point of his life. They're looking as a family for something with a bit of stability now.

Yep. This is basically a guy taking time away from the game to figure out if retirement or something else is in the cards.

It's essentially a mutually agreed upon contract termination following open discussions between player and management. Looks like this was handled in an exemplary manner by both sides.

Can see him back in Grand Rapids actually.

One year deal with a move into the org. next season.

He made the point clear to Adams that he didn't want to be riding buses in the AHL again. If he's not going to do it for Rochester, he's not going to do it for Grand Rapids.

to add onto ehatZman said….

look at his recent contracts thr last 4 years

he got 1 yr contracts in 19/20, 20/22: 22/23 that were the same salary in the AHL and NHL.he’s been in the nhl Except for a few games with Seattle AHL.

this years it wasn’t equal but a 2 way with a higher nhl salary and a much lower AHL salary of like $350K.
my feeling in this agreement he was told that he’d be on the Sabres even if it was a 13/14 F and not playing in Rochester.

he goes to Rochester after getting hurt in preseason , clears waivers, more of a conditioning assignment in Rochester given his absence in camp/ preasesson

my gut feeling is he viewed this as not what was supposed to happen

i don’t know if he said something to Adams in losing passion about the game given focus on new kid or if the injury wasn’t better.
he didn’t not want to do a bus league. Buffalo had injuries at center and needed a player in Rochester.
then they did contract termination waivers

he’s likely not signing anywhere this season since he didn’t get clammed.
maybe he retires

itappears he might have family just across the border in Niagara Falls/ st Catherines area.

Always hated that Detroit took Sheahan instead of Kuznetsov.
But for a couple years, the kid looked promising.
Rookie year - 42 games 9-15-24
Basically an 18-30-48 pace
Sophomore - 13-23-36. Not bad. OK.
3rd year - 14-11-25. Stagnating
4th year - 2-11-13. Disaster.

His skating seemed to deteriorate from good, to above average to average to below average within 4-5 years.

For a guy like Sheahan to have value, he needs to be a 52% or higher on faceoffs.
