This is so weird.

We don't play for another 65 hours, and it's a home game, so there is 0 traveling. The Marlies, are also currently in Toronto.

I could see it if they were leaving for a road game but they play at home Thursday. Weird indeed.
Exactly.

Saying what everyone is thinking.

Came here to post this .. Found out I was beat
Love how everyone was thinking the same.

Well if the Marlies aren't playing until Thursday either I guess it's to get him up practicing with the big team?
That may be the case, but that would mean someone is on the move or someone got hurt. Not sure why that would be an emergency case though for the latter.

WTF constitutes and emergency recall? Serious question.

And injury or illness to a player on the Leafs roster .. Usually happens when a team is on a road trip or about to leave the next day so they can get it processed quicker

With the Leafs not playing until Thursday and are at home (as are the Marlies) it's really bizarre

I have a hard time believing this is a precursor to a trade though..

WTF constitutes and emergency recall? Serious question.

From the CBA

(i) A player on loan to a Club of any
league affiliated with the League may be recalled from such loan
under emergency conditions at any time for the duration of the
emergency only following which he must be returned promptly to
the club from which he was recalled.

(ii) Emergency conditions shall be
established when the playing strength of the loaning Club, by
reason of incapacitating injury or illness or by League
suspension to its players is reduced below the level of two (2)
goalkeepers, six (6) defensemen and twelve (12) forwards. Proof
of the existence of the emergency conditions including the
incapacity shall be furnished to the Commissioner of the League
upon request made by him.

...

(b) (i) A Club recalling a Player from a minor
league club, under emergency conditions, must specify on the
transfer form the name of the injured, ill or suspended Player
whom the Player on emergency recall is replacing.

(ii) When an emergency condition
terminates, the Club must submit a transfer form indicating
whether the Player's status has converted to regular recall or
is assigned to his minor league club.

Well then the only thing I can think of is Dion punched Joffrey in the face broke his hand and shattered Joffrey during there first practice together in a while.

Here's an easier explanation; (Via PPP)

The NHL permits each team to carry up to 23 players on its active roster, subject to the constraints of the salary cap. However, it also requires a minimum of 2 goaltenders, 6 defenceman and 12 forwards on its active roster at all times. A player is not considered on the active roster if they have been placed on the Injured Reserve List or are suspended by the NHL.

If the team falls below any of these minimum categories, they are permitted to recall a player without subjection to waivers in order to meet the NHL minimum roster requirements. However, the player must be returned to the affiliate when the player he is replacing returns from their inactive status.

It's usually used for when there's an injury or last minute absence of a player.

We don't play for another couple days though... so this emergency call up is definitely a head scratcher.

Only thing I can see making sense is that Kessel is day-to-day and they need a body in practice for now.

For a team that has been playing the recall/reassign game all season for extra cash, why wouldn't they wait till later in the week to bring him back?
