Certainly a curious visit, intriguing. Surely whatever they had to discuss could easily have been done via phone or even email if just an update on arena progress. Heck, just have to read the papers. Obviously somethings going on.

From the artcle at the last paragraph

Bryan Stevens, spokesperson for the Seattle Department of Planning and Development, said on Tuesday that the environmental review on the project is now not scheduled to be completed until "sometime this fall". He added, that he believed, that there had been "no measurable movement" in the last few weeks.

I am not surprised in regards to the EIS as Hansen won't release it until there is movement of a NBA team coming to seattle or an agreement reached between him and the NHL group in funding it and building it for a NHL team.

There is a way to build it for a NHL team with out modifying the MOU. It just requires cash from the NHL group to get it going and public portion will kick in once the NBA arrives.

The EIS is a moot thing if there is no team coming here so no point in releasing it too soon thus giving more time for the two opposing groups I-91 and ILWU to try to kill it in the courts.

Sounds interesting, depending on how well the meeting goes how soon until we get expansion to Seattle and what city gets the 32nd team?

Seattle isn't getting a team until the NHL knows the arena is going to happen.

Edit

i hope murray and dow mention on regards to the issues as to why the arena won't happen with just a NHL team. Perhaps there are things the NHL can to help address those issues in terms of finding the right ownership group for the Seattle NHL team. I don't mean the league itself funding it.

Isn`t there is a question of who will control the new building.Hanson wants to own a NBA franchise but not a NHL team but wants to run the building and enjoy the profits. An NHL team would have a tough time being successful without sharing in money generated from non hockey events or having to pay as a tenant.Should be interesting to see how this plays out.

Can you subvert Hansen and his ownership of land? Can he be bought out?

Can you bypass Hansen and find other land to be bought in the general area?

This could have been an exploratory meeting that, maybe, considered going a bit out of the box. OR, it could have explored the parameters of the box.

There will be a partnership between Hansen and the NHL group in regards to revenue of the arena. That is not an issue. Hansen being minority owner of NHL will address that.

There is no other land in Seattle that will work for an arena. Hansen has to be involved in some way. Ray B is not to waiting to pay for majority of it to get the arena built in Sodo with out Hansen's involvement. If arena in sodo is not going to happen then the arena will be happening (if it ever does) outside of Seattle.

That's a good question about finding a deep pocket hockey guy? Oh to be a fly in that conversation.

Now here's the thought Why would bettman be in seattle to talk to Murray and Dow with Daly. Its normally just daly but both?

My understanding is DALY does the normal lifting but Bettman comes in when it's serious correct? No way Bettman comes to Seattle to just feel out the arena process.

It's either down to Portland or Seattle for the Pacific & probably KC for the Central ... I honestly can't think of anywhere else (certainly not Houston)

It is intriguing, especially with Bettman tagging along for the ride. Hopefully a sign of a positive development that the league's done a good job keeping the lid on.

NHL Spokesman Frank Brown confirmed the meeting Tuesday, and said "Commissioner Bettman met with the Mayor while on the West Coast for playoff games. The purpose of the meeting was solely to obtain a status report on the new arena."
...
Sources have told KING 5 that Constantine has privately been meeting over the last several months with potential hockey investors, who are interested in bringing a team to Seattle. Three different groups in recent months have expressed interest in owning an NHL franchise in Seattle.

The bold would have worked better if Vancouver had been in the playoffs, because that is "in the neighborhood". LA is a 2.5 hr flight, so... NY to Miami?

Just to get the Seattle stuff refreshed, three different groups have actually met with Constantine. We initially had Bartoszek, Levin and Roenick's groups as the probably contenders?

It would make sense that if the NHL is serious about Seattle, that they'd meet with the city officials to discuss exactly the arena details and what the league would need to do get construction going. Like someone above said, it's not a matter of if, but when, if only the arena would move forward.

My thought on this is simple and that is if Bettman and Daly both went out of their way to pay Constantine and Murray a visit on the way to/back from LA, that shows that despite all of their comments they have made as of late, they are clearly serious about trying to get something done and bringing a team here. That all said, tommy is right about the NHL owner needing to kick some $$ in; that that hasn't happened yet is why we're sort of stalled out at the moment in getting this thing done.

Vancouver folks, CD5 (Daniels) will be on 1040 at the top of the 5:00 hour to discuss the developments.

Levin is out of the running of the team. Bartoszek doesn't want to put the $$$ into the arena.

What i hope is this discussion will lead to the proper ownership group appearing with the $$$$ to make sodo arena happen. Maybe that is something the NHL can from their end and find that right group.
